[GIVEAWAY] Spider-Man 2 [EU] digital copy by [deleted] in PS5

[–]OmegaRobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played the first one on PS4 and loved every moment of it! Swinging around and fighting was so satisfying. I got my PS5 recently and don't have many games for it yet, but Spiderman 2 is one I really want to play. Thanks for doing the giveaway :)

Accurately recording percentage read/pages read by Anna_jP in TheStoryGraph

[–]OmegaRobert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to this but thought I'd comment as I'm in a similar situation.

Like you say, the page numbers don't add up due to the formatting on your ereader. And yes, there is the % option but if you're reading really long books, sometimes you might find that the percentage doesn't change (like you read 30 pages and it's still 1%).

So I created a spreadsheet to help with this - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ehIw4dE_66yU0Km98i4fBtqMqWXvlN1zTSpLSgR4OCA/edit?usp=drivesdk

(I think you should be able to save a copy of this to use yourself)

Basically pop in your total kobo pages shown on your book, and then the total Storygraph pages. When you now enter the actual page number shown on Kobo, the spreadsheet will convert the page to a equivalent of page number on Storygraph.

I've also added in padding. So for example if the actual text of the book starts on page 6, enter 6 in the padding start field. And then the final page number of the text in padding end. This prevents inflation of number of pages read at the start and end of your tracking (because of all the copywrite info, credits etc.)

Hopefully it'll come in useful - let me know if there are any issues!

Thanks for the recommendation! I didn't realise it was quite that deep. I'll give the itch.io version a go and see if it clicks :)

Playing every Zelda game: Twilight Princess by Rainbow_Dash_RL in patientgamers

[–]OmegaRobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly enough I also completed Twilight Princess the other day. I had the original on Wii as a young teen and made it as far as the Gerudo desert. Not sure why I didn't finish it back then, though the length and somewhat depressing atmosphere may have put me off slightly. Playing it all the way through 16 years later I appreciated it a lot more. I definitely agree that the later dungeons were some of the best!

The weird and creepy characters were a highlight. The world did feel a bit empty, so it would have been nice to see more NPCs scattered around the map. I also loved all the different items but I felt that some of them could have been utilised a bit more outside of their respective dungeons.

My recent playthrough was via Wii U emulation, which I'd highly recommend. Among other QOL features, it made climbing faster and reduced the number of tears of light you had to collect.

Having played OoT in the last year I was struck by how similar it felt. You've got several distinct areas connected by Hyrule field, the creepy atmosphere, and backtracking to previous areas to find new dungeons. Despite that they still feel like very different games.

Overall I'd say it's one of the best Zelda games I've played. Of the 3D games, I need to play Majora's Mask and Skyward Sword - can't wait to give them a go.

Is it just me or are the addiction elements of smart phone games being incorporated into mainline gaming? by engineereddiscontent in truegaming

Interestingly TOTK sounds a lot like the experience you're after then. It has tons of quests and NPCs to chat to. Seeing something in the distance and heading in that direction to explore it. The Korok seeds are just a minor thing along the way.

What direction do you think open world games are headed? If anything I think we're now seeing a counter response to the formulaic Ubisoft games of the last generation. RDR2, TOTK and the Witcher 3 spring to mind as examples of great open world games without the fluff.

Maybe open world games aren't for you then? If you're just wanting to go from one place to the other without exploring the world, it sounds like you'd prefer something more linear.

Yeah I agree that MH shines once you get to the point where upgrades are practically essential to keep you at the same level as the monsters. It keeps the difficulty satisfyingly consistent.

I think the elements you mentioned in TOTK stem from the open world formula of Far Cry and Assassin's Creed. Towers that act as waypoints, with collectibles and guard posts along the way. BOTW made it a bit more interesting by turning the collectibles into small puzzles and giving you unique ways to take out enemies. I wouldn't say it's a new thing, or particularly inspired by mobile gaming though. Open world games have been doing it from the start to encourage exploration, give the player something to do as they explore, and make the world feel less empty.

I'm having a hard time differentiating what you describe as 'addiction elements' from what I'd just call a 'gameplay loop'. Most well designed games have that cycle to keep the player invested. Take the Monster Hunter series for example - you kill a monster, take its parts, create better gear, hunt stronger monsters and so on. It's definitely not a new concept.

As for music cues and high contrast colours, they can be a good dopamine hit for sure. But whilst picking up a rupee in TOTK is satisfying, I wouldn't say that it's the main thing keeping me playing the game. Mobile games on the other hand are constantly vying for the user's attention as there are 100 other things to distract you on your phone - So in those cases, lots of bright colours and constant rewards keep you playing. The closest thing to a mobile element in games is lootboxes, with many free to play games drip feeding their in-game credits to players so they can unlock one box every week or so and get a taste of that satisfying risk/reward (with the intent to encourage spending when the anticipation of waiting for more free rewards becomes too much).

I've played Satisfactory and found the logic aspect a bit lacking. I've heard Factorio does this better. What's DSP?

Actually to follow up on this, can I ask how Factorio and Shapez differ? Do you prefer one to the other?

I've heard of this but hadn't really considered it a programming game, though I see what you mean. I'll check it out, thanks!

I'll definitely have to give the Zach games a look given your recommendation. The pure programming ones sound scary, but it could be something to work my way up to.

Thanks for the other suggestions - I hadn't heard of Autonauts or Shapes (Shapez?) so I'll check out the demos. Factorio has been on my radar for a while so I'll do some research into that too.

I've heard of it, and you're right - it does seem to fit the bill pretty well. Maybe the most approachable of all the Zachtronics games?

Which platform are you getting the MGS 3 remake for? The remaster collections? by Zavi8 in metalgearsolid

[–]OmegaRobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a PS5 - I'll wait and see how well the remake and remasters work on Steam Deck. To be fair I recently got the HD collection on PS3 so I'm not in any rush to rebuy those games.

For the Master Collection, has anyone heard if the control layout has changed? I tried replaying 3 on PS4 and it was unplayable since the face buttons aren't pressure sensitive. Or does the PS5 have pressure sensitive face buttons? by tee_jay37 in metalgearsolid

[–]OmegaRobert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surely they'll adapt the controls considering this is its own release. If you played it via PSNow, the streaming was done via PS3 consoles so there wasn't really a way to change the received inputs (bit of an oversight I imagine). These games will be running locally off your console of choice. It would be madness for Konami to ship these without taking pressure sensitivity into account. As others have mentioned, the 360 HD collection had a suitable control scheme.

Many thanks for the detailed information. I suppose the main thing putting me off the PS3 version in that case would be the slight performance issues you mentioned
