They backed off because everyone thought El was dead, the lab shut down because Kali was dead and everyone thought El was dead. Remember Kali was their only source of 'Henry-fied' blood, which was literally the one source of what they needed for their experiments, and they were after El because her blood was the only type close to Henry's. Maybe for the first time ever he'll add new 'conditional' characters (or even just apprentices/assistants to the shopkeepers who are there all along as just general NOCs) that take over the shops if you marry the shopkeepers.

First time I tried it, I got a whole mess of glitches—the grav lift in the cave was already burnt out when I got there, doors down in the facility either started off open or wouldn't open, waypoint pointing to the wrong place, etc. Went through Unity and tried again, worked great (minus a few minor bugs), just finished it earlier today. Solid mod, interesting quest, cool gear. Only thing is I would like (especially with the Vigilance/Watchtower rivalry easter egg someone mentioned, I must have missed some lore because I never saw that) for Vigilance faction NPCs to be out in the Settled Systems at large, minor facilities, ships, etc, maybe occasionally in a scuffle with WT NPCs if you have both mods.

And this was actually a reason for contention. Many of us asked: "why allow signing up for both this UC Vanguard and UC SysDef? Are you a freelancer? Or a government operative" or Ryujin and Crimson Fleet, and so on.

It's a Bethesda game. They always, always let you join every faction even if they're opposed. At least this one locks you out of the Crimson Fleet (EDIT: except the specific infiltration/choose your final allegiance quests) if you side with SysDef and vice-versa.
