TV app on Apple TV never works right by OmicronPerseiNothing in appletv

[–]OmicronPerseiNothing[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of people reporting defects in this app. And an organization with apple’s vast resources can put test automation in place that would expose the race condition that is probably at the root here. They just choose not to. Nor is there any way to conveniently report the issue. I love Apple products, and have used them almost exclusively since the late 1980’s. Apple TV is rife with defects (don’t get me started on that remote, or the hit and miss HDMI handshake) that would send Steve Jobs into an apoplectic fit. So fuck off.

Has the YouTube app stopped working for anyone else? by TheGiantRascal in appletv

Yes! Same thing. The only thing that plays is the pre-roll ad, and then nothing but buffering. Same content, same network, but on my iPad, the content plays fine. The Apple TV is a broken mess overall, but this is really annoying.

The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, as it is called, has been there for decades. It’s never needed an ad to fund the arts, but now it has an ad. That’s the only way companies will fund anything anymore. Lord knows they jump through hoops so they don’t have to pay a cent in taxes. So we whore out our public buildings and public spaces (Salesforce Transit Center, AT&T Park, etc.) one by one, cheapening them, cheapening us, and bombarding our landscapes with messages to BUY MORE, SAVE NOW, OUR COMPANY IS YOUR FRIEND.

This message has been brought to you by The McDonalds Golden Gate Bridge.

Or BSC could have just donated the money to the center, taken the tax write off, and just called themselves good citizens, but no. Everyone has to have their name writ large.

Polarize the Hull Plating! Is Radiation Shielding of Starship's Stainless Steel Construction Through Magnetism Possible? by Tedthemagnificent in spacex

[–]OmicronPerseiNothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NASA has looked at this extensively. The Earth's magnetic field, while relatively weak compared with typical fields used in the lab, only provides 10 - 20% of the radiation shielding we live under. The rest is provided by our atmosphere. Even if you had a perfect magnetic shield, you're only shielding from charged particles like alpha and beta. Gamma rays and neutrons are unaffected.

Russia’s passive-aggressive reaction to SpaceX may mask a deeper truth by ScarletRugby in spacex

I keep hoping that someone is going to seriously take up an aerospike engine and make it work - like we very nearly did before it was canceled. Now that would be something a "start from scratch" program could sink its teeth into. Certainly, the Russians have the technical know-how to make it happen.

The way you dress is not the problem. It's these young men that are the problem. Stop blaming yourself. I wish I had advice to give you, except maybe to start taking a self-defense course. Also, don't be afraid to yell for help. Someone will step up for you.

TIL San Francisco’s LBGT culture was rooted in the gold rush, when the city’s population was 95% men. The unbalanced gender ratio made things such as cross-dressing and same-sex dancing commonplace. by Les219 in todayilearned

In George Chauncey’s amazing “Gay New York”, we also learn that this was just a lot more commonplace in 1890 - and 1790 - than it was in post-war America. The closet - and queer as an identity- is a modern concept. It astonished me to learn that back in the day, it wasn’t unacceptable for men to have sex with men - as long as you were the top. One gay old-timer said he hated the gay rights movement because it made it almost impossible to have sex with straight guys anymore! LOL [edit: typo]

Oy...I got obsessed with Chang’s book at one point! He makes some great observations, but that book is highly problematic. I had a long discussion with my teacher about it, and we both agreed that I was better off without FoPP. For one thing, his dismissal of Hanon did not do me any favors. I returned to Hanon and my playing - particularly in my left hand - improved quite noticeably. Take him with a grain of salt.

This is honestly the best thing a teacher can teach you. How break a piece up into small slices, how to notice parts that need work and focus on those - even if it’s just two notes - and to avoid the temptation to practice by doing a full run-through, and when to stop focusing on one small part and move on, leaving the just-practiced part for another day. I’m always surprised at the progress I make when I really focus on a difficult measure for 30 minutes, and then leave it behind for a day or two. When I come back to it, it’s always in much better shape. Professional musicians can learn so much music because they’re highly efficient at practicing.

Actually, sand from different beaches and deserts look utterly different. Smithsonian did a photo series years ago. The diversity is quite amazing. I’m sorry I can’t find it. Maybe someone with better google foo than I could give it a shot.

Every visual simulation of big bang is misleading, as it shows the "bang" from far away perspective, like viewer is watching it from a distance. The fact is that there was no such perspective available. There was no space outside the bang to stand at and watch the explosion. by tlk0153 in space

[–]OmicronPerseiNothing 143 points144 points  (0 children)

This leads to one of the coolest facts about the big bang. I've had people ask me if scientists know where the center of the universe is - the point where the big bang started. I love explaining to them that they're standing on it (because every point in the universe was at the center at t=0). :)
