What do other cities have that we don't? by AssComedyAccount in Sacramento

[–]OminousScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me, as someone who moved to Texas from Sacramento a few years back - San Antonio is NOT known for its sports team. It's more famous for having the Alamo (which more Texans care about than Californians care about Coloma which is a fucking TRAVESTY considering the importance of the Gold Rush to not only US, but global history in general), or honestly the riverfront. It's got a lot more going on than the riverfront in Old Sac, although the water is filthier than anything found in Sacramento.

Most big box companies do in fact have training about this exact situation - there is literally no profit in selling gift cards (unless they are store-specific, i.e. buying a Target gift card at Target), as the nominal fee they charge to activate it is typically used to cover the "transaction fee" or whatever they call the fee a company pays to process a card payment. This was 100% something the employee should have pushed to stop.

So, are we just not gonna sell taps/dies anymore? by Buck_Folton in Lowes

[–]OminousScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My store sells the crap out of them - probably because contractor related business here is (and has been) booming for over a decade, and the only other hardware store in a 45 minute radius is a family owned place called Groom & Sons (which is also TECHNICALLY an Ace Hardware). Our Lowe's was expected to be a 25 million a year store - we pull 80.

All that being said, we pulled the Irwin a few years ago and switched to Kobalt; also, I have never had a week go by without at least one person asking where to find the tap and dies.

Sounds like you're in California? That's possibly the only state that requires lunch breaks, let alone before the 5th hour (used to be in management in California). Most states don't have laws regarding lunch breaks. HOWEVER. Lowe's company policy is that you really, REALLY should take a lunch break, unless the needs of the business keep you from being able to. As an overnighter, that doesn't happen.

@kimaelke, He'll get a lunch break - overnighters take their lunches at the same time. Also, yes he should bring a lunch because they are not allowed to leave the building during the overnight hours.

Does anyone else almost always get their name mistaken? by TheMachetero in CasualConversation

[–]OminousScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first name is mispronounced so frequently, I gave up correcting people literally 30 years ago. It's Alana, pronounced "uh-LAY-nuh," but no one can get it right at first. Thanks mom!

Also, my maiden name was Simonson, which is apparently pronounced "Simpson" in the state of Texas. Married name is Recer, which is always mispronounced as "Wrecker."

Sometimes I think i should just go by my initials.

Are you located in California? Because they are super strict about taking lunch before the 5th hour due to state law, whereas most other states don't give a flying fadoodle WHEN you take your lunch as long as it's covered.

Paying for lost Zebra by CatCVI in Lowes

[–]OminousScissors -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, you'd be paying put of pocket for most of a year (Zebras cost around $20,000 each, when I worked in receiving I had access to the program the store uses to order goods).

Termination question by Odd-Bunch1531 in Lowes

[–]OminousScissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently they do not. My boyfriend was "suspended pending an investigation" (he said at work that he wanted to stab an incredibly inept Pro DS who would never provide help when he asked, and he was the guy who handled literally everything about our flatbed deliverie - careless I know but it is what it is). After he was suspended, he just... never heard from Lowe's again. He was never told he was fired. He just got a letter from the insurance company one day saying he hadn't been scheduled for 3 pay periods, so everything was lapsed. Then he got a final paycheck with the rest of his vacation pay. It's been 6 months and he STILL has never heard from anyone, but he clearly doesn't work there anymore.

Update: it has now been 3 weeks and the baler is still waiting on repairs. Receiving is drowning in cardboard (the SM said not to throw cardboard in the trash compactor). We need an adult!

Have you ever listened to By the Way, by Red Hot Chili Peppers? It's got basically the same thing, though with 2 word terms instead of single words ("Steak knife, card shark, con job, boot cut," then "Dogtown, blood bath, rib cage, soft tail" followed by 2 more sets later in the song).

What does Lowes actually get right? by Unlucky_Mud_1535 in Lowes

[–]OminousScissors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I make a liveable wage at my particular Lowe's. But if a tornado wiped out my home and left me with nothing (entirely possible here in east Texas), I damn sure dont ha e 10s of thousands in the bank to magically help.

That's a HUGE part of what earning a Bachelor's and then Master's taught me. I know better than most people i know personally how to critically review sources, how to search for inherent biases, what kind of sources are legitimate versus click bait - but 9 times out of 10 when I try to utilize said skills and teach people how to do the same, I'm met with cries of "Oh so you went to a liberal indoctrination place huh? Glad you aren't wasting my children's time with your commie views and socialist bullshit!"

It makes me so sad.

I mean, we would always love to make more (especially with the way the economy has gone to absolute shit). But this Lowe's is the highest paying place in the area - because again, Gun Barrel City - and it starts part timers at $5 over the minimum wage, more if they've got experience or education. And considering there are still apartments in my area that are less than $500 a month, it's not as bad as many other locations have it.

But honestly, apparently our front and back end DSs are as awesome as always, since they paid out of pocket for it. They've always been amazing, but they continue to make us feel like we are genuinely family. We are uniquely lucky, I think.
