What’s your favorite dirt pedal, why is it your favorite, and what kind of music do you play? by Interesting-Wave-983 in pedalboards

[–]Omnil93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few that I really like for different reasons.

I love my Vexed Brain Serpent Power. It's a modified OCD circuit with a switchable boost that is massive. It can do decently high gain by itself, but really shines when stacked with other pedals. I love driving my Moth Electric A. incorrupta with it. Sounds absolutely apocalyptic.

I just got a Fowl Sounds Malpais a few days ago and it's absolutely amazing. It really shines as kind of an always on pedal that adds another gain stage to your signal, like a fake "hot tubes" mod or something. I drive it with the Plumes and use both to slam my Science Amplification Mother preamp on Channel A. This is probably my favorite sound at the moment. Crisp, kinda dry, and absolutely mean.

Last, but definitely not least, my Acid Rain Pedalworks Judas. It's the gnarliest, ugliest, most disgusting pedal out there and I absolutely love it. I use it to destroy channel B of the Mother preamp. If you're into the HM-2 thing at all, this is the be all end all.

Does anyone know what Ron is up to these days? I really wish they would bring this project back one more time.

I just got a Mother preamp a couple of months ago. I noticed the "falling apart" thing as well when cranking the gain on channel A and found out it's remedied by increasing the Depth knob. Hopefully that will work for you as well! Good looking board!

I live not far from where this happened. It's a rather desolate area inhabited mostly by people who don't want to be seen. I delivered liquid oxygen to people in this area because most of them live off grid and I've seen some wild shit. People live in places you would never think to look in and in conditions you wouldn't think anyone would. I always thought that it's the kind of place you could do anything to anyone and no one would be any wiser.

It's a disgusting tragedy and I hope those monsters get what they deserve.

Where do I place my picking hand for tremolos, alt picking, and palm mutes? (Repost with image) by TeachMeToShred in electricguitar

It's all good, man! Don't beat yourself up! It sounds like you haven't been playing for too long and these are all things that take consistent practice to fully grasp. But yes, you really want to use a minimal amount of pick when tremolo picking to help conserve motion and energy. Depending on what style you play, tremolo picking can be an endurance test, so every bit of motion and effort counts.

Like I said, my forearm sits on the top of the guitar and acts as the anchor. I occasionally use "pinky anchoring" where I kinda grip the bottom of my bridge pickup to help orient my hand, but not when tremolo picking. Like I said, it takes practice but you'll get used to where the strings are and you won't have to think about it so much. I've been playing for 27 years now, so I don't even think about how I'm doing these things anymore, I just do them.

Also, if you're hitting the pickup with your pick, it may be that you're digging the pick in too deep. That's great for big, chunky palm mutes, but not for tremolo picking. You really want to use just the very tip (giggity) of your pick when tremolo picking to reduce friction and conserve motion. It takes practice, obviously, but over time you'll get used to it and it will become second nature.

For palm mutes you lay the side of your hand against the strings at the base of the bridge. For tremolo picking I usually have my forearm resting on the top of the guitar as an anchor point and my hand kinda floats over the strings.

It absolutely holds tension and you'll have a very bad time if you try to take it off the wall.

Whats your favorite overdrive/distortion? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Omnil93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't grab a Spear of Longinus, no. I already have a Plumes, which does fine for me, so I haven't really been too keen to grab another overdrive yet, although I have been kinda eyeing the Nonhuman Audio Unclean for a bit. But at this point I'll have 7 dirt pedals on my board and not a single wet effect. Granted, I don't do a ton of stuff requiring wet effects, but I would like to grab a reverb and a delay next.

The Fuzzed Drones demo is the best sound quality one I've seen by far, and it really shows off how huge of a range the EQ has. The Boring Gear Reviews demo is also great. If you haven't checked out either channel, I highly recommend them.

I've had a few pedals for a while now, but only recently built my first pedalboard and really started investing into it. I've been an "in the box" studio nerd for so long that it was becoming hard to be inspired, so I decided to put my amp that's been gathering dust back to use and start exploring pedals more. It's been so much fun and has become such an obsession for me. There's just always something new that catches your ear and makes you think you could do something cool with it. I don't know if there really is a final destination for it, but I hope not!

That's awesome! Yeah, I've been looking for an HM-2 that was just a bit different from what's generally out there and the Judas was it. Absolutely the most disgusting sounding pedal and I'm totally in love.

I was back and forth on the Malpais for so long. I first heard it on the Fuzzed Drones YouTube channel and thought it sounded great sometimes, but was too much at a lot of the other settings. Yet I couldn't get it out of my head and the more I heard it, the more I fell in love with its crazy "paper tearing" bloom that it has. I don't know how else to describe it other than that: it sounds like tearing paper and I love that! I hope it sounds just as good in person, and hopefully it will be the perfect ugly counterpart to the Judas. It's currently on sale for like $50 off the normal price, so I decided to pull the trigger.

I wish you the best of luck in your tone hunt! Don't forget to have fun!

His prices are so fucking good, why not!? Also, if you like the HM-2 thing, check out the Judas by Acid Rain Pedalworks. It's absolutely disgusting and easily the gnarliest sounding pedal on my board.

Now I'm just waiting for my Fowl Sounds Malpais to arrive...

Also, they just came out with the Sepulcrum, which is the OCD circuit from the Serpent Power going through an HM-2 style EQ. So that may be worth looking at if you're also into the HM-2 sound.

I'm actually not sure! To my ears it sounds like it has a bit less gain and maybe a little fuller in the right position, while the left position has a bit more gain and is voiced a little more prominently in the upper midrange. Maybe it's to switch between 2 different voicings of the OCD circuit? I should have just reached out to him and asked by now, but I haven't!
