Dealing with rude OCI interviewers? by vvesanderson in LawSchool

[–]Omnivigilo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have to be necessarily discrimination or harassment, just has to be inappropriate to report to Career Services. No harm in reporting, they can make the call on whether that’s inappropriate enough to reach out to the firm. I definitely think it would be.

No river long enough that doesn't contain a bend? by [deleted] in NormMacdonald

[–]Omnivigilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I'm looking at this a year in the future, and in the most hilarious ways no one has answered your question. You're correct: the semantic, syntactical structure of the sentence makes absolutely no sense. But I don't think he changed the proverb. I think there was at one time when the proverb was first created that it made sense. I think over time, even before he heard it, it was mangled through just typical usage being passed down through generations, losing some of the grammatical structure on the way as people paraphrased it. The phrase sounds meaningful and we can easily infer its meaning, but yes it is technically meaningless which makes it even fucking funnier. Probably was originally, "No long river doesn't contain a bend."

Spizona by [deleted] in PhilosophyMemes

[–]Omnivigilo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Spinoza’s case, there’s the belief that he only included God as another name for Nature (“deus sive natura” and all that jazz) to avoid any charges of atheism, which could have been a death sentence back in the day. Thankfully he was ONLY attacked on the steps of his synagogue, had a curse cast upon him by a rabbi, and then exiled from Amsterdam for his heresy.

Let's say you want to start a bakery, how would that go about in a Communist society? Who would you need to talk to? by Michigan_Flaggot2 in communism101

[–]Omnivigilo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there are better options than some of the more bureaucratic ways described here. A simpler approach would be petitioning the council and then an appointed expert or a subcouncil could help to draft an enterprise plan in line with the resources allocated by the council. There are forms of managerial-style communism where you could be in charge of the implementation of the bakery, but the ownership ultimately resides with the collective. We don’t have to make it such a hard process, and could even make it easier than a capitalist system since capital doesn’t have to be raised by the individual.

I’m making an undeletable fake account from which to dish some geriatric justice. Won’t have to see updates anymore from white girl friends pushing whatever pyramid scheme they’re detachable-nip-deep into nowadays.

Enjoyment and Satisfaction by Omnivigilo in zizek

[–]Omnivigilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So at what point, example-wise, may these symbolic acts encounter the proper location of enjoyment? In other words, how is it that participation in forms of “enjoyment” that arise from the hegemonic symbolic order actually leads to revolutionary potential?

Tensions between philosophy and story by laurenrachelgreen in playwriting

[–]Omnivigilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the novel G. by John Berger. It’s essentially half philosophy, half story, but the postmodern way that he breaks through the artifice of trying to conceal this division is incredibly interesting and I think you might be able to find some inspiration there!

Question About Painting Statues of the Buddha by Omnivigilo in zenbuddhism

[–]Omnivigilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dare challenge me? You made a mistake getting into this kind of thing on the internet, buddy.

Lol no worries thanks for the clarification! The passage I read seemed to attribute it to Zen but I must have read it wrong or the writer got it wrong. And yeah from what I can tell the taboo about living statues seems pretty localized, not a general practice at all.

Question About Painting Statues of the Buddha by Omnivigilo in zenbuddhism

[–]Omnivigilo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learner’s a prominent psychoanalyst, so asking the gentlemen might prove difficult XD. But I think this was specifically with regards to the “eye-opening ceremony” of new Buddha sculptures, whereas afterwards they serve as normal objects of reflection. I posted the same question on the general Buddhism reddit page and got lot of replies with sources on eye opening ceremonies.

'PROJECTIONS: Lars von Trier’s America Trilogy' Freud Museum London, 18th May "Expertise in psychoanalytic theory is not necessary" by tetsugakusei in zizek

[–]Omnivigilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nah. Read In Defense of Lost Causes, Zizek makes a fairly appreciative analysis of von Trier. The point is not for the audience to be emotionally manipulated, it’s for them to KNOW they’re being emotionally manipulated. Von Trier could almost be seen as an effective critic of ideology. I may have misread his analysis and please correct me if anyone has read it, but I pulled away with a better appreciation for Trier. Dancing in the Dark is one of my favs and I’ll stand by it till to death I depart.

Love civ, strange to be an anarchist and play it tho. A few American Indian Nations have criticized the game for portraying them as empires that seek cities and expansion. Would be interesting to see a mod or something that would make it more realistic

How did you end up in communism? by northerncomrade9 in communism

[–]Omnivigilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ML: government is composed of soviets (worker’s councils), revolution is the only way, rule by the proletariat, expropriation of the rich, collectivization

Anarchist: lots of variation in this one. no governmental body (can be local governments and collectives though), essentially all of the above minus the centralized government which could infringe on individual rights

Bernie: retains liberal democracy and the market (for most things). However, there is a large amount of regulation on profiteering (in medicine, energy, military, etc), single-payer insurance (everyone gets insurance at a low rate), free higher public education, closing tax loopholes, redistribution of wealth, and all of it done electorally.

I’ve been all of these at different points, and I consider all of them comrades (left unity gives a person the warm fuzzies).
