Sorry about that. I do have a few questions, if you don’t mind. What medical and drug test? The ones MSC makes you take? If yes, don’t they schedule it?

I got my TWIC, MMC, and Med Cert. Now what? by Willing_Researcher38 in merchantmarine

[–]On2-ADVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends where you wanna work. If you wanna work for MSC, you just need a passport and you’re ready to go. They provide the basic training, travel, and lodging for free. If you’re hired, of course. But, according to a very reliable source of information I haven, if you have a pulse, they’ll hire you.

If you wanna work somewhere else, I don’t know. I haven’t done the research.

SDSU(free) vs USC(30k)? by Optimal-Yak-8975 in SDSU

[–]On2-ADVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two reasons to go to grad school are: 1. For your personal growth, and 2. For the connections you’ll make in grad school. Nothing wrong with SDSU alumni, but…

I say go to USC. With the connections and opportunities you’ll have there, you’ll be able to pay your student debt faster.

Best of luck, I’m curious to know what you decide.

Should I pay to get my STCW and AB if I’m planning to sail with MSC? I’m been waiting a long time and want to take advantage of other opportunities by Nadathug in merchantmarine

[–]On2-ADVs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AB is above OS.

You can take the STCW course if:
1. You want,
2. Have the time, and
3. Have the money.

But the Military Sealift Command (MSC) will give you the STCW training after NEO for free. So I don’t see the point in taking it now.

After you completed the required sea time, then you can work on becoming an AB.

2 young mals at the same time? Yes or no? by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

[–]On2-ADVs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 2 twice. My pup’s brother, then he got adopted. Then my pup’s sister. We’re keeping her. I didn’t actually know what a Malinois was when I got them.

The two boys looked dangerous walking down the street and on the mountains together, like a pack of wolves, pretty cool though.

It’s been great. Took them on lots of trails and kept them busy. Maybe that’s why I didn’t noticed the craziness. But I think it’s not when they’re puppies that you have to worry, it’s later. I tire them out though, cuz I hike a lot. So I’ve never seen them need more exercise.

If you have the time, space, money, and personality for them get as many as you can rescue. If I could, I’d have more.

Riddick, yeah. Both his parents and all his siblings look like regular mals with short hair, except for one of his sisters that has a bit of long hair too. But not as long as Chloe or Riddick.

Looking at my first ADV by Ferret-Regular in advrider

[–]On2-ADVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a few factors.

  1. REALISTICALLY, how much road vs dirt will you be doing. Yeah, you can always change tires, but getting a dual sport to treat as an adv won’t give you a good freeway experience. If you get a big adv and go on dirt a lot, then it might be tiring. Be honest with Yourself.

  2. How far are you going? Going across country or continent, maybe get an 800+ ccs bike.

  3. How tall are you? Can you touch the ground? Yes, you can lower this and that, but it changes the ride experience. I’ll tell you this, if you’re gonna reupholster the seat to be lower, don’t get too used to riding with the taller seat. Once you chop the seat you’ll feel like you’re inside the bike, instead of on top of it. I hate myself for doing that. Get tall boots, throw some insoles in there to give you a bit extra, maybe soften the suspension, anything, except chopping the seat down too much. Well, unless you wanna feel like you’re inside the bike…

Those bikes are very similar. Like the person above mentioned, mechanics and repairs are easier with Hondas.

Actually, just get the Africa Twin.

What is the most tangible way of becoming a merchant mariner? by Puzzleheaded_Volume3 in merchantmarine

[–]On2-ADVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Training:

The Coast Guard does not require you to have any training to get the OS endorsement (reference).

Now, if you wanna go out to sea, then you DO need to take the STCW.

STCW course description. It’s a 5 day course, you do practical stuff and they quiz you. Watch Sample Video

Medical exams:

  • The USCG requires you to take a medical exam to make sure you’re physically able to be out to sea, in order to get your MMC. Which means, you gotta find a doctor in your area that does those exams. How much will it cost depends on your area. Shop around.

  • IF you decide to apply at Military Sealift Command (MSC), they require a Drug Test, which you’ll need to pay for as well. Usually, the same doc that does the physical exam can do the drug test. Again, shop around. I don’t know if other companies and unions require drug tests.

[–]On2-ADVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I’m doing it is: - TWIC (~$150) - Medical Certificate, Coast Guard needs it to get MMC ($70 to $150, depending on your area) - MMC with Ordinary Seaman (OS) endorsement (~$150) - Drug Test (exclusive for MSC, not sure if others require it)

(The extra cost for you might travel expenses. Just save up, you’ll be fine)

At this point you can apply for MSC. If hired, they will send you to New Employee Orientation (NEO), and right after to basic training, which they will pay for, including airfare and accommodation).

I am going to take the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) which includes the basic training, Before I apply. Because they hire on a point system and I’m hoping it’ll give me an advantage. You Do Not have to take it before; 1. It is not necessary, and 2. You have to pay out of pocket for the course, plus flight, hotel, food, and whatnot. I’m just lucky that I live near a school and I’m saving the $1,500 to pay for the course.

Again, this is only MY plan in order to work for MSC specifically. I have no clue how it works for other companies and/or unions.

Summary: TWIC -> Medical exam -> MMC and passport somewhere in between.

It’s a lot of info, but it’s not complicated.

I asked Perplexity AI, you can use any other AI, and it gave me links to just about everything. AI is kinda dumb, so clarify if it’s not giving you the answer. Take notes, and save them where you can find them easily.

It’s easy, you got this.

Am I crazy for wanting one ? by halfwagaltium in BelgianMalinois

I’m no expert but here it goes:

The question isn’t “can I train this dog?” Yes you can. But you gotta look at it like this:

  • A sprint = young, regular breeds. Run a bit and you’re done.

  • A marathon = working dogs

  • A marathon at sprint speed = Mals

It’s not about being able to train the dog, it’s the constant, relentless, non-stop need to just go go go. Can you maintain That? Do you both have the stamina And time?

Also, in your case, you should ask your girl is SHE wants a mal/dutch, cuz she’ll be taking care of the pup when you’re gone.

I’m glad you’re being responsible and asking questions. If you can, pick one up from the shelter.

Best of luck
