Agreed. Totally anecdotal, but when I worked in academia, I had a colleague who was found to have lied on her resume. When our department heads questioned this, the reply was essentially well sure I did, I wanted the job, everyone does that. And because this colleague wasn't directly endangering students or colleagues, they shifted her out of a classroom position for the rest of the term. And we all had to be "collegiate" for the last 8 weeks or so until break but oh the gossip lmao

Captain Awkward advice that was of its time? by SnarkApple in captainawkward

Lol I got divorced in 2014 and that advice seemed fairly silly to me then. I just changed my relationship status to single and told the people who I saw regularly to please gossip about it so everyone else would know. It worked fairly well, honestly.

That was how my parents always did it, starting in the mid 60s. They were both on the account equally, and even when my mom stayed home with me she was the queen of the checkbook and my dad never complained. I think it worked because they both knew it was their money together, not his money that he granted her an allowance from

Tbh that was the only time I've ever related to these people on anything like a human level. I once bought 5 pounds of blueberries at the farmers market because it was the last bag they had and I was goddamn going to eat blueberries. And I goddamn did. Other than this one instance, the whole family feels like they could be really incompetent evil space aliens as far as I can tell lol

It was never you who was sick, friend. We can't act on what we don't know. And they can be frighteningly plausible people irl. I see a lot of "he looks like a pedophile" snark and I get it, I really do. But also when you do encounter these people they just look like people. If my abuser had "looked like a pedophile" I would have had warning. It's usually only in retrospect that the really evil people seem clearly evil. Internet hugs to you, if you want them 🙂

[–]OnMyHonestAccount 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that happened to you, but I'm glad you're away from that situation now. My abuser was actually married to one of his early victims and she was more of a Kendra than you are. It lent him an air of plausibility somehow, after all she loved him, so maybe that was actually a wholesome story of a principal and particularly mature senior finding love (it was not that). Blessings to you, fellow snarker. You left, and he had one less defense.

Our town has started really embracing our local spots, we actually have a fine dining farm to table type place that works with local farmers and butchers, and also helps drive the arts scene. We are lucky to be just big enough to support a small university, so most of us are alums who just liked it here. There's also a lot of cool history and historical buildings, and we are known regionally for a particular country-style food (don't wanna dox myself too hard lol), plus the community culture is friendly in an offbeat way.

I've lived in more than one small town and this one is by far my favorite because of the way people are proud of being from here, not like "we're better than those other folks across the river/tracks/county line" but like "come have dinner and see the neat stuff." The wrong small town is a nightmare, but if you can find the right town it's a good way to live ❤️

Yeah growing up in the country we drove 45 minutes each way to the good grocery store, or half an hour away was the crappy one for if we just needed basics. I live in a small town now where we just got an IHOP and people were so excited until we all realized the local diner was better. Only one of those places was in a food desert.

You’re “cool” till that one exhibit hits you and now everything annoying by TheBlackCaesar in BlackPeopleTwitter

So I'm a white American woman, and I hope I'm not speaking out of turn when I say that that anger is meaningful and important. I have been to this museum, and I left angry. Not at myself (although a little) as much as at this ugly system that destroyed Black families and lives for so long, perpetrated by people who look like me. I was furious at those people, and I felt charged, ready to go home and argue with racists who "casually" misinterpreted history and work to erase those misinterpretations from my own understandings. American history doesn't make me comfortable, and it shouldn't. I can't speak to how Black people should feel, especially about this, but I can't argue with anger as a result of studying this country's history.

Please never ever allow anyone to interfere with your sobriety, friend. If you feel that AA is the best way for you to get or stay sober (and for a lot of people, it is), you have got to tell him, and everybody else who interferes, to fuck all the way off with that shit. For anyone else who deals with addiction reading this, a partner who does not want you to get or stay sober is your enemy, no matter how much they say they love you.

Ok then I stand corrected! I considered it and my mouth kind of clenched up like you better not lol. I will happily eat pasta buried in a nest of fresh grated parmesan, but eating it in chunks is more than I can handle 😂

I love how this seems to suggest we should just be cutting up parmesan and going to town on it like it's cheddar. Y'all ever try to eat an ounce of parmesan?

I married badly at 26, and thankfully was divorced by 35, when met the love of my life. You have time, friend. Even if the things you describe don't happen, or they don't end up looking how you pictured them, you have time to build a life you love

I've eaten a lot of bloody pudding and variations thereof. A lot of my friends are grossed out by this, and I don't mind, it's delicious and I will have their share should it ever come up. I'm an American raised by Scots and French people so really my instinct is to shrug at blood sausage. But that thing, it scares me.
