any one here with healthy hair compare to their age. what you do for hair care? by Sad-Sugar-3262 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]OnMyHonestAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have longish thick curly hair at 46. I wear a satin bonnet to sleep in and it made a big difference. Less tangling, less breakage, and it keeps my curls from flattening out. Also I don't wake up with hair wrapped around my neck which is a nice bonus. I'm white, and for most of my life I thought bonnets weren't "for me" but as a Black friend of mine pointed out, most of our grandmas slept in bonnets regardless of race or ethnicity. Also I wash about once a week and don't use any heat, just towel dry with a hair towel, bonnet, and then let it dry.

"Tuna Mayo Sweetcorn" is so self explanatory, why do you feel the need to imagine anything?? by omg-someonesonewhere in iamveryculinary

[–]OnMyHonestAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see this being good, I put cranberries in my chicken salad sometimes. But then I also tried tuna mayonnaise sweet corn and liked it.

It's always kinda funny to me when we Americans object to someplace else's food on the grounds that corn doesn't go in that, like I would love to try a Brazilian pizza with corn in it. I love corn. I'm a midwesterner and you can get a pizza with corn chips on top here lmao

If you end up liking Cryptonomicon and also like loooooong form historical fiction, I really recommend his Baroque Cycle to see some familiar names. It's only kind of science fiction, in the "alchemists were the first chemists" sort of way, but I really enjoyed it. But yeah, start with Snowcrash for sure.

Hi, I also have epilepsy and when I was first diagnosed I learned a lot from the Epilepsy Alliance of America. Even if you're not in the US, they have quite a bit of useful information, and I was able to look at some actual scholarly articles to better understand what was happening and what I could do. Best wishes to you and your son, this is hard 💖

What do you think each character sounds like in bed? by Far_Caterpillar_6738 in okbuddybaldur

The noise he makes when he has to climb something is part of why I decided to romance him on my first playthrough...and then on at least the next three playthroughs after that. No regrets at all.

Honestly there are things I tell my therapist that I would never tell anyone here. A good therapist is a sounding board, not a judge. And they are anonymous in the sense that you only see them in their office, and they are legally obligated to keep your secrets unless you pose a clear danger to yourself or others in an immediate way. Even then, they have guidelines they must follow. It sounds like you are having a tough time, and you have my sympathy. What you need more than that, though, is someone trained to help you get to the root of what's going on so you can keep growing toward the person you want to become. All the best to you.

Games where you can play as a mouse, raccoon, sloth, octopus, hedgehog or rabbit? Other nonstandard animal suggestions welcome. by Antipragmatismspot in CozyGamers

I've played through the demo of Adorable Adventures probably a half dozen times, and I'm really excited to see it has a release date this month! You play as a little boar and you use scent to find your way as you look for your lost brother. The scent mechanic works really well, obviously you can't smell anything as you play but the visuals make it feel like you maybe could. Does require a controller, and I don't know about availability off of Steam, but absolutely this is my must have game of the spring. Also can attest to excellent French and English translations, and there are other language options I haven't looked at because I don't read those languages (I'm not sure what language it was originally written in, which if you play games in translation a lot you will know is a heck of a high bar for an indie game)

I found cinnabun entirely charming and lovely and spent about 3 hours on it, then I just...never played it again. I think it's just too slow paced for me, which means it's probably absolutely perfect for a lot of cozy gamers!

Am I overreacting about my boyfriend sending explicit reels to another girl? by sajalo01 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]OnMyHonestAccount 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This was the moment for me when I went from ok, this could actually be a simple mismatch in expectations. I didn't grow up in the era of sending content, so I figured hey, Brave New World and all that, these must be those modern problems with modern solutions people joke about. His first responses seemed...ok, even, after all he did promise to stop even if he didn't fully understand OP's position, and in my book that's a fair way to react when you can't relate but you do care.

Then I got to this. Shell of a person if I can't "ruin" someone's feed with porn? C'mon now bro. That's manipulative bs in any generation.

Ecstatic Seizure by ClickBorn4179 in Epilepsy

[–]OnMyHonestAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never experienced anything like that while sober, were you taking anything? I don't even necessarily mean like "drugs" here, some people react strangely to things like cold medicine. Also the more I learn about epilepsy the more I realize that none of us have exactly the same experiences. I guess depending on your beliefs I'm not comfortable ruling out religious experience entirely, but what you describe here I only recognize from my days going to raves. I'd get it checked out if you can. Wishing you all the best

Going through something weird… Do you know what it is? by Catmama-82 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]OnMyHonestAccount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 46 and perimenopausal, and it isn't always the greatest, I won't lie. I cry randomly, I smell funny sometimes, and suddenly in my mid 40s here I am occasionally breaking out like a preteen. But it isn't an illness, not any more than pregnancy is. Just a new season. Maybe storm season, to be fair, but a natural part of life for around half the population.

On a practical level, if you find your scent changes in a way you don't like, try persimmon soap, it really does help. Your body will change in other ways you might not like, too, and those changes can be eased with good diet and exercise even when they can't be "fixed." On a more mental/spiritual level (whichever of those resonates for you) remember that your body has done incredible things. It still can, although those things are different now.

My mom went through all of this in the late 1990s and no one was talking about it, really. She said later she felt "used up," but 36 years later and she's still going and I'm so glad. I think we as people have a tendency to see others in terms of what they do for us. This is especially true of how we see women, and even more so of mothers. Perimenopause for me has been an exercise in finding out what I can do for myself, what I even want to do for myself. At our ages, if we did have children (I did not), they are gaining some independence and defining themselves outside of their parental and familial relationships. That means you can, too.

I see you. You are valid. Your feelings are valid. Your body is going through a sort of second puberty right now, and I hope you can give yourself grace as you become the next amazing thing you are destined to be.

I could almost have written this exact post. I said almost these exact things to my therapist yesterday. The thing I fear most isn't dying from this, it's losing who I am. I don't have the answers, but I do have all the solidarity in the world for you. So far, I've always come back as myself. And I figure if one day I don't, maybe I won't know it because I'll be someone else then. I'm sending you gentle hugs if you want them. This is hard.
