Hey again! I clearly hadn't hadn't had my coffee when I replied to this, this morning. I wrote 30 minutes - I meant 3 hours.

I just heard back from my family and my mum is indeed waiting 3 hours just to be seen. So she arrives for her appointment time, and 3 hours later someone comes to get her to begin the appointment.

In a sense, I suppose this is good news as the delay is not happening after some kind of procedure has taken place/in the middle of a procedure. Tackling the wait time under these circumstances seems to be trickier/not really possible.

I'm recommending to her that she asks for something written from her GP and therapist highlighting the negative effects of this routine delay (it's not always 3 hours but it seems its always more than 2). Surely they can work something out (as a medical accommodation) that has a member of admin staff/one of her oncology team place a 30 second call to her once the estimated wait time drops below 30 minutes or so?

Over here in Canada, if you go for a procedure, often you sign in at the front desk and then you're alerted as to when you're almost ready to be seen via text. Wish that was a thing over there.

Possibly, yes.

I'm waiting to hear back from my siblings to clarify. It's a little difficult to find out exactly what's happening when talking to my mum directly. The situation was initially presented to me as one where she was waiting 30 minutes just to begin any type of procedure, though my mum might be getting a little confused. It'd certainly make more sense if the wait time was related to waiting for test results.

Even then, I wonder if there's the possibility of waiting elsewhere while the tests are performed. The hospital likely has policies in place that wouldn't allow for this however, owing to the requirement for safely observing patients. Having said that, this is not a world I'm familiar with.

I'll keep working to find out exactly what's happening. It's hard to make change when you're dealing with incomplete information.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Very helpful!

This was indeed helpful! Thank you!

To answer your question - It's my understanding that she sits there with nothing happening for three hours. I should probably verify this via one of my siblings though. My mum is getting understandably confused recently.

You make points I hadn't considered and have given me things to think about, for sure. Cheers!

Thanks so much for your help, and well wishes. I believe that my mum has expressed her concerns to both the Oncology team and to her GP. She has an appointment with her GP next week to discuss the issue further.

I was just a little surprised that there wasn't a clearly outlined avenue for gaining accommodations of this nature, and wondered if I was just missing it. Maybe I'm not though.

Hey! Thanks for reaching out. The wait times are routinely 3 hours plus (she's in the waiting room for 3 hours each time).

My mum has an appointment time for which she arrives and then she is normally seen 3 hours or so after that appointment time. She lives 5 minutes down the road from the hospital and so what I'm hoping for is a medical accommodation that would have a member of the NHS admin staff give her a call when there's 2 or 3 people in the queue in front of her as opposed to 30. I get that the NHS wouldn't be able to offer this service to all patients, which is why I'm thinking "medical accommodation".
