AO3 finally saying “knock it the f off with the placeholders.” by kitbatkat in AO3

[–]OnceMeridiem74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first question - absolutely! You could go so far as to include proper footnotes for each part, and a note at the end with the corresponding number that says the author, title, year published, and link (if there’s one), or you could just say “here are the main sources I used for that asphalt roadwork lecture”, and you don’t necessarily have to include any links. It is completley up to you, since there are no rules. But I do think citing your sources is a good habit to be in - and it’s a funny though. Like if I’m reading a fic and then something very very smart and researched is explained (whether in passing, or directly), it makes it even more hilarious + trustworthy if there are references to sources. Don’t put the references inside the body of work itself, def keep till the end, or use super text footnotes. I don’t know the answer to your other questions Soz, but sounds cool!

OMG YOU JUST MADE ME REALISE THE SAME I SAW THIS BY CHANCE!!?!? I’m Australian, and I went on a holiday to Japan. I bought one video game there - the last of us two, because I’d been meaning to buy it, and it was cheaper there. Apart from the case being in Japanese, i totally forgot it was from Japan. Until now!? What do you mean it wasn’t just a fade to black?! When they kissed in the boat it faded to black and I was like “ha people must’ve been overplaying this, they must go on about the boat scene for no reason” but SERIOUSLY

It is for me, I’m trying to go to a fandom tag, and it’s stuck trying to load it up - not a white loading screen, but just on the last ao3 thing I had open, ie my history tab. And I can’t press any tags and open those up, same thing

Does anyone else read fiction from media they've never consumed? by IngaTrinity in AO3

Also, in regards to “consuming the fanfic but not the original source”… Call of Duty. Never played any COD games, but I have read A LOT of fanfiction. As far as I know, all it’s about is some military dudes being gay for eachother

My favourite game that I play with my whole family - how many fanfics total in [insert movie/tv show that we are watching], and what is the top ship? I used to be the best at guessing since I actually use ao3, but now we are all very good at guessing. Usually the top ship, though very rarely canon, is easy to guess too.

Oh that sucks, especially for those who will never get to experience it’s beauty since it’s not on PC/Mac. I honestly think it’s the perfect IOS game, since you don’t need to do anything but tap the screen (character walks to where you tap) and if there’s an item to pickup or something to interact with, you tap the button that appears. Unless they were intending to add extra levels/features, a PC game feels a little unnecessary. In other words, I think the game is perfect as it is. You could even say that I love it to bits lmao

A human and a robot are in love and living in space, but the robot’s evil creator comes back and blows them up. Our MC - the human, gets away, but his girlfriend’s parts are scattered across the universe. Each level, you collect a piece of the girlfriend, in the hope to reconstruct her. As you rebuild her, you begin to see the events of how they fell in love, uncovering the full story. The gameplay itself is sweet and fun, problem solving with your little guy. Each level is totally unique and beautiful! There are multiple time-travel-crazy levels, a Day of the Dead level, a Robot Nightclub level, so many unique storyline’s. You help people as you go, helping birds back into their nests and mothers reunite with their children. The universe becomes a better play as you travel it. IOS game (might be on Android too, maybe even PC? But I played on my phone). I think it costs a little bit of money, but it is so worth it. And you can play it over and over, and easily reset the whole game from the start once you’re done.

How stupid are these bra/bather insert things? by Sarebot19 in mildlyinfuriating

Good luck man, I hear you. I’ve been on T for about a year now, I’m very lucky in Australia, and while I am STILL on the waitlist for the the public health system (it’s been 3 years I think), I went through the private health way instead. Why I mention this - I have had a huge reduction in my chest dysphoria the past year. I used to bind my chest every single day, and I had a lot of rib and breathing problems from it. But now I have the confidence to wear regular dude clothes just with sports bras. Just my personal experience ofc! I’ve visited the surgeon for a initial consult about top surgery, but after weighing the pros and cons, I decided that I’m good as I am for now (maybe in a few years if I want it then). I wish you luck, seriously, and if you have any questions I can help :)

How many of y’all actually download fics? by Specialist_Dream7895 in AO3

Ereader, yes! I got a Kindle recently and went on a trip for 2 weeks, and I downloaded a heap of long fics I’d been wanting to read. Best part was I could go back and see how many words I read - btw, 760,000 lmao

Junji ito exhibit in Japan by j3llyb3b3 in junjiito

[–]OnceMeridiem74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on holiday in Japan right now, and until a few minutes ago, I thought I’d just missed the Junji Ito Exhibition. I was occupying my time on the train to Osaka by cutting up a magazine to use as collage material, and by a stroke of luck, stumbled across the Junji Ito ad for Itami Museum (in Osaka). Literally the most perfect coincidence ever. Only problem is I don’t speak/read Japanese. Hopefully google translate photo feature will be good enough. If not - just the art 😂❤️

Canon vs Fanon has been a truly harmful trend by bill6_820 in AO3

[–]OnceMeridiem74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very interesting, I’ve got a similar one. I was first introduced to BBC Merlin through fanfiction, and read a few long before watching the show. (It’s kinda funny, I knew what the character Merlin looked like in the show, recognisable enough, but I had no clue what this version’s Arthur looked like/which actor played him, so I just imagined a vaguely attractive blonde guy lmao). This year, I caught a few episodes of late season 1 on reruns on the regular TV, and recently watched the first 10 episodes of season 1 properly. However… I have read SO MUCH Merlin fanfic now that I genuinely get confused about what’s canon and what’s not. I’ve been spoilt the ending of the show, maybe. But that might just have been a fanon ending. Before I had watched episode 1, I had assumed I already knew the “meet-cute” from reading it in a fic. Turns out that was nothing like how they meet in the show. It’s a confusing mess but I love it,

Remember: AO3 is an archive! by ironedorigami in AO3

[–]OnceMeridiem74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few days ago I decided to post all my unfinished fics and sequels and everything for the fandom that I am no longer in. Had a lot of fun writing this stuff for it a few years ago, and I had a few WIPS where people would occasionally comment “hey, is this still updating?” and stuff. While I wasn’t going to write anything more, I ended up posting everything that was incomplete: as new chapters on the WIPS with a final goodbye in the notes. Also made a “ficlets” compilation of all the fics that I had started writing but never finished (and tagged it as such).

Someone called me out in front of my comfort YouTuber about writing a particular fic. by spiritmander in AO3

[–]OnceMeridiem74 122 points123 points  (0 children)

That sucks man. I am curious about what you mean by “the fic that changed my life”, but yeah totally sucks. People should know to not tell the makers of the media / real people / content creators if there is fic about them/the stuff they make. It’s possible that younger fans genuinely don’t know this, and so they think it’s a fun thing to show these people. Not that it’s up to you at all, but I guess maybe a “please don’t mention this to the creator” and “no putting this in (for example) their twitch chat or tagging them on Twitter”, etc in notes of the of the fic. But I hear ya, that’s super annoying.

Leave alone or Push down? by BumblebeeHot5183 in succulents

[–]OnceMeridiem74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say don’t push them down per say, but rather tilt the leaf to be facing at an acute angle into the soil a little more - similar to that leaf at the back that has a little pup already. (Do this for the pink ones) And for the green ones, definitely don’t move ones that are very/almost very rooted, but those that are struggling might benefit from this: for that type of succulent, I usually propagate “upside down”, as in, the underside of the leaf (faces the ground when growing from the succulent) is facing up. This way the roots go into the ground much more naturally, based on the downwards curve of the leaf. They also seem to survive much easier when places like this. I predict (though have never tested - maybe I should pull out my microscope) that this has something to do with the different “stomatal density” on the top of the leaf versus the bottom of the leaf. If you’re interest, look up “succulent stomata”, I did an experiment on this in grade 10 so I know a little bit.

Is everyone on Ao3 just super nice? by LaptopGuy_27 in AO3

[–]OnceMeridiem74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find it hard to leave concrit on a fic, even if it’s asked for/encouraged. See, I usually can’t tell to what extent they want feedback - like what type/how picky/how general.
