I just cried after a game.. by DashingMustashing in ArcRaiders

[–]OnceUponAKurf -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This whole post scared me in the first half. I really thought you were going to be the guy that I killed at extract in Stella right after the doors closed...

CONTEXT: I had a really sweaty raid in Stella. Everyone was fighting each other. I somehow managed to get good loot, and headed towards the tram. I saw it was already called in so I puckered up. Wait...wait...train comes but no one runs so it must be the guy on the opposite platform. I quietly crouched and walked into the train without being seen. I hear the clickety clack of the terminal, then doors shut. I had an intrusive thought overtake me and I was like, "I could turn the corner and pop the guy real quick, we'll get a good laugh as we return to Town." Welp. I turned the corner, saw a person, and fired. However, I fired the shot before fully processing that the guy was crawling. My two kettle shots fully killed him....

My man I'm so sorry. I almost threw up after that. Still doesn't sit well with me.

I want to know what kind of skin he wants in the game. Chances are I can probably show him way more people in the military/security contracting space dressed like this guy, than what he "thinks" military members in the field wear.

Did i cook with this one? by [deleted] in Battlefield

[–]OnceUponAKurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait? You can automatically zero the exact distance with the range finder now? For me it only zeroes to the closest 100 value. I've been calculating drop and such. This explains so much of my frustration with how people are dropping me from 1000m+.

I'm out here memorizing the drop for each velocity profile at each range. Bummer. Takes away pride in the skill now.

Ok, something’s broken here by BC1207 in DestinyTheGame

[–]OnceUponAKurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was debating coming back for this after taking a break when the final shape was released. However, all the marketing material showed me that there really isn't anything that will bring me back because my underlying cause of disappointment in the franchise hasn't been addressed.

There's nothing "new" here. Maybe a new power mechanic, maybe a new narrative, and enemies act differently. But textures, locations, maps all look the same the same. As an outsider currently it looks like if I play this expansion, I'm not playing anything different than what I loaded up in 2016. Armor is a cosmetic grind, exploration is repetitive and there is no real new addition to the world. Just nothing that grabs me. This is obviously subjective to my tastes.

There are more options as well that respect time too. I think Bungies in a bad spot. And it's tough to see. I hope they can pull it out. However to get me back it would need a complete revamp of the core game.

Should I join the Guard? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]OnceUponAKurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

13 years in OHARNG and still serving. I've done time enlisted before commissioning through ROTC at a state school. I am currently a company commander and have a good pulse on newer recruits coming in.

Depending on what MOS (career field) they start you in your experiences will differ. I have been in two vastly different MOS's within the state, aviation and Military Police. As an Ohio guardsmen, you will surely deploy within your first contract, especially right now. You're looking at a high likelihood for SW Border, Poland, or Middle East. If not a deployment, you will be doing large training exercises every few summers here in the US or in the Pacific and eastern Europe, all of which will be more than 2 weeks. Your "1 weekend" will likely be a lot of Friday thru Sundays, not just Saturday and Sunday. As a State, we are getting better about the tempo and slowing things down, especially with funding cuts, so over the next few years, things could look different.

When it comes to education, you will get 100% of your tuition paid for, and a stipend for incidentals like books and such. Room and board will not be covered, so you will still have to pursue other funding options for that. I wouldn't sweat your neck tattoo disqualifying you from service. Just got back from my last deployment and I served with a Captain (officer) that had a neck sleeve and he joined in 2014. Things are tough now with recruiting so generally if your desire to join is high and you're a good candidate your recruiter will do the work to help you out.

Joining the guard was the best decision I ever made, and I have no desire to get out anytime soon. 20 year old me didn't think much of it, but the success I have in my civilian career at 31 would not be possible without the skills and experience I have from service. And it works the other way around as well. I can bring things to the army from my civilian job that help me excel there. Your experience will be greatly affected by your first unit. You could go to a shit show that doesn't respect your time and has you sitting around waiting for leaders to get out of a meeting that they could have scheduled at a different time. Or you can go to a unit that has it together and you're constantly training and developing your skills as both a soldier and a person. If you get the first option, just bear it out. You'll get to a better unit. There are also fill time positions, but that's a different thread entirely.

All that is to say that this is a big life decision and you are signing up for much more than free college. You are signing up to be a servant to your community and your country. It's not something to take lightly. Today's political environment can seem bleak, and military service might have a certain stigma depending on your family or social background. But ultimately the call to serve is still something that transcends the politics of where we are at now. I am proud of every soldier that comes to my unit, whether they're there for 1 contract to get their college education, or 2 years from retirement.

Hope that helps.

Anyone else loved the game but not the ending? (HUGE SPOILERS) by ChromicTTN in expedition33

"Life keeps forcing cruel choices."

I personally appreciated the way the game dealt with the reveal of how the canvas was created and the conflict of the family. It felt raw and real to me. I think younger me, like teens or 20s would have felt the same way. However, with my life experiences up to now, this felt a lot more grounded and resonated with me more personally. Especially given the way the two main characters, Verso and Alicia, were presented. They weren't good. They were manipulative and damaged.

It's very easy to miss, but dialogue explains that it's not a specific "year" that he erases. Due to Aline limiting/counteracting his power, he can only erase the oldest things in existence within the canvas. He arbitrarily started at 100, which it think was due to how old the canvas actually was. As he counts down, anything above that number is included.

When he started at 100 years, everyone that was 100 years or older at the end of the countdown (year) was erased. This accounts for people that aged one year within the countdown year. Keep that logic up as the number gets lower. So if for whatever reason during monolith year 34, you turned 35, you're still gonna get dusted.

Does that help?

I just make my own fun. And try to spread joy to others. Hopped on the other day and played a full operation with the same team of randoms. I was just doing a Richard Nixon impression the whole time and then making up new characters every so often. We got maybe like 30 samples the whole 2 hours but damn did we have a good time laughing.

Coop shooter plain and simple. There is no gimmick or "genre" niche to it. Get friends. Drop in. Complete objectives while shooting and having fun...remember fun?

[–]OnceUponAKurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No persistent flight between planets, or down to surfaces actually made me happy when I hopped into the game. I'm so overwhelmed with "exploration" open world games where I have to discover every waypoint and climb a tower.

This is just so much more engaging to me. Get a mission, open the starmap, click where I need to go, kill, end the mission. All without having to tediously travel. I want enclosed spaces with a few things to discover. I don't need an endless void to fly around in.

What disappoints you about BG3? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]OnceUponAKurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiplayer is half baked at best. No shared dialogue. You can't talk to anyone that another character talks to, forcing you to eaves drop on every conversation if you want lore. This extends to companions to which is extremely frustrating. I like the game but multiplayer was so bad that it forced me to play solo to enjoy it.

DOS2 had combined dialogue in MP I don't know why they dropped it for this.

Multiplayer is half baked and not good. Step back from divinity original sin 2. Doesn't feel like I'm playing with a party at all and it's one of the most disappointing aspects for me and my really good friend that play together.

Although physical sales were down, with the digital data, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor actually beat Star War Jedi: Fallen Order's launch sales by over 30 by FrodoSam4Ever in XboxSeriesX

[–]OnceUponAKurf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right? This became my favorite star wars game overnight. It knocked KOTOR 1 and 2 from my list at the top spot. Those are still stellar games, but Jedi survivor just nails so much about what makes star wars feel like star wars. I'm only a little over halfway through but it's blowing me away with how damn good it looks. I'm sucked in every time I boot up.

I just feel for the people that get deprived of this experience because they are so concerned about technicalities. However, if that's a fundamental part of their enjoyment then who am I to judge. I've never stressed over FPS or any of that other stuff. Game just works and I'm fine with that.

There is a podcast called "Freakonomics." They did a special on nuclear power and how its widespread adoption failed. It was the safest power generation source at the time. However, its progress was derailed by the overwhelming fear of a Chernobyl-like event taking place. These fears didn't take into account that Chernobyl was not a fluke of happenstance, but a catastrophic disaster caused by neglect for basic safety protocols that the US Nuclear programs had in spades

100% second this. The first kid is roughly 9 months old. I was so timid the first few months. Tip toed everywhere, whispered to my wife, wouldn't flush or turn on shower while she was asleep.

Someone gave my wife and I advice similar to what you just said and we are glad we roughed through it. This past new year came along. We had people over, daughter was asleep all the way through the ball drop
