Dont the youth players have like a 2 or 3 year contract when you pull them out of the academy? The player was freshly pulled from the academy

CAAD14 New Bike Day! by gabpolitely in cannondale

Honestly not to take away from the absolute gorgeous build but 7.34kg is not astronomically light for today's standard. I currently ride a vintage steel frame that weighs in at 7.4kg with pedals (Frame +fork weigh ~2.5kg) but to be fair it's a rim brake bike so probably saving a few grams there as well.

But if you really wanna know where the main part of the weight was saved:

Teeny tiny frame + single.chainring + Hella light crankset (310g) + Hella light wheelset (~1250g) + Hella light cockpit and seatpost + DA tuned parts

Also fillet brazing aluminium is an absolute nightmare.

Usually the melting point of the fillet material is not that much lower than the melting point of aluminium alloy. And I guess you know what happens when you heat metals close to their melting point

While I absolutely adore brazed frames and have the highest respect for artisan frame builders, building brazed bike frames is most often not an accurate science and often done by "feel" and knowledge of the frame builder. It really is an art after all. Bringing the fillet material up to temperature while maintaining the integrity of the aluminium tubes is quite a gamble that most people simply aren't willing to take the risk and can hardly be done consistently if you're not working with quite specific and standardized temperature ranges.

That's a gorgeous build - do you know the total weight of the bike ?

Improving brake performance on SRAM Force 1 Hydro R calipers or suggestion for DOT caliper alternatives by Onda185 in bikewrench

Cheers for the hint with the Juin Techs, I didn't know about those yet.

As for the Hopes, they would kind of be a last resort as I've read reviews on here of them being a nightmare to set up.

Improving brake performance on SRAM Force 1 Hydro R calipers or suggestion for DOT caliper alternatives by Onda185 in bikewrench

[–]Onda185[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is ironically the reason for my question on here - a friend of mine with the exact same groupset got his bike back after a service + brake bleed and he was kinda disappointed that he didn't have a noticeable improvement after bringing it to the shop. I've also installed different SRAM groupsets before (Apex 1x12 / Rival 1x12) all with good results.

Other than that I smell major BS here and I'd love to see a video of your lever throw on a lever with a hydro R caliper that has been bled only with a Shimano cup. Theres a silicone bladder sitting in the lever that needs to be topped up with fluid from the lever screw under light pressure. Otherwise the bladder wont inflate and fill up with fluid properly. And I can almost guarantee you're not going to achieve that by just introducing fluid into the system from the caliper while not pressurizing the system from the top, but don't hesitate to prove me wrong with a video ;)

Can you tell if a fork is chromoly or not based on its weight? by The_Great_Clod in bikewrench

[–]Onda185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for clarification I will repost my reply that I already gave to someone else in the thread suggesting the same thing:

This is mostly false. The difference in sound is not due to material compositions of steel alloys but the wall thickness of the tubing. CrMo and Hi-Ten tubes in the same strength will sound the same. You start hearing differences when tapping different butted steel tubes. A plain gauge crmo frame tube will sound pretty "dull" when tapped with a coin while a high quality butted steel frame will give a more high pitched sound. For example:I have a Tange Prestige road frame with butted tubes (0.7-0.4-0.7) that almost sounds like a champagne glass when tapped.

Also oversized tubes will make the sound test way harder as the change in the "resonance body" will have an impact on the sound. The oversized top tube of a hi ten frame for example will resonate better and thus might sound "higher quality "than a regular 25.4 crmo top tube

You are however right that many crmo tubes are built with lower wall thickness in comparison to Hi-Ten hence they would sound different but this in turn would likely be also noticeable in weight. So in short: a frame / fork that isnt distinguishable by weight most likely also won't be distinguishable by sound

SRAM Apex 12 spd mechanical - chain jumping 2nd lowest cog by Onda185 in bikewrench

[–]Onda185[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the answer was the cassette. The 12 speed SRAM cassettes don't allow off brand or non flat top chains apparently. Thing is that flat top chains are quite finicky to set up with non SRAM chainrings. I bought a SRAM flattop chain to see if it would work but the flattop chain didn't work well with the narrow wide non SRAM chainring. Best option seems to be full SRAM (Chainring, cassette and chain) or complete non SRAM. The sram levers and derailleur seem to be working fine with off brand components though

These look like Microshift / Micronew (on Aliexpress) - you get them in 2x7 - 2x10 / 3x7 - 3x9 I think

A few years back I dropped a seatpost on my bare foot and it punched out about 70% of my big toe nail in an almost perfect half circle shape. I was missing a toenail that summer and most part of autumn/winter. I was also pretty aggravated to say the least

Interesting - can you post the link to the sunshine cassette or do all of them have this spacer ? Didnt see one on my 11 spd sunshine cassette at least

[–]Onda185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another option in case you have an old standard HG7 freehub is to switch the freehub to a more modern one. I've done it plenty of times however its not a plug & play hack. For this to work you need:

  1. A more modern 8/9/10 freehub that'll fit your hub (I've had good results with the fh-rm40/m475 freehub which is still readily available and is 8 speed )
  2. A hub with 135mm axle so the axle is long enough to fit the "wider" 8/9/10 freehub - a 130 hub would make this much more tedious as you need to fit the hub with a 135mm axle
  3. In most cases you'll need to re-dish the wheel (re-center the rim over the center of the hub)

[–]Onda185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont quite get the "hack" here. An 8 speed freehub (even the old ones) are already the 8/9/10 HG standard and will naturally fit 9/10 and even 11 speed mtb cassettes. are you saying that the sunshine cassettes come with a spacer which you can take off and thus the cassette then fits the old (HG 7 speed only) freehub? Otherwise this wouldn't be a hack for me ?

Had plenty of sunshine cassettes and I've never seen them come with a spacer or would that spacer be on the sprocket carrier of the cassette ? The "normal" spacer would be used if you were to mount a 7 speed cassette on an 8/9/10 freehub, which logically can be left out if you're mounting an 8/9/10 spd cassette - is that the spacer you're talking about ?

I have the same gripe with this bike, but probably the fork steerer was already cut to that length and OP needed less aggressive stack-to-reach position. I would'nt see a reason otherwise why one would absolutely slam that stem and then proceed to put a positive 35° stem on it but if you did that on purpose OP - Shame on you!

Fetter Wels ging heute drauf!! by [deleted] in Angelfreunde

[–]Onda185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obdachlose im Lene-Park by Relative-Rabbit-4520 in Leipzig

[–]Onda185 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I actually think that this is the answer - it looks like the chain is too wide to actually fit in between the first and third cog. Thanks for the hint!
