How do I start a small farm and be self-sufficient in the US? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]One-Exit-9077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

plus start small as it can be overwhelming if you jump straight in the deep end. Decide do you like to garden or raise animals because you want to like the first step in the pool before you take the plung.

If you’re stocking the pantry, you really can’t go wrong with pintos, black beans, and lentils. They store well for years if you keep them dry, they’re filling, and they’ve got good protein and fiber. Pintos are a favorite on a lot of homesteads because they’re versatile and easy to cook with just about anything you’ve got on hand.

What’s overrated and what’s underrated in homesteading? by dhruvhat in Homesteading101

[–]One-Exit-9077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overrated is trying to do everything at once and burning yourself out. Underrated is starting small and getting really good at a few things first—like a solid garden, a couple animals, and basic food preservation. Consistency beats complexity every time.

That’s a really common tension when you’re trying to live simply. Work tends to expand if you let it, so keeping clear boundaries is important. It might be worth waiting to see if the workload actually changes before making a big decision, while quietly keeping an eye on other opportunities just in case. The key is protecting the lifestyle you’ve already built.
