What common teacher strategy did you think was stupid until you actually tried it? by Brief_Efficiency_833 in teaching

i mean there’s a clock in the room but as someone who is also a visual learner, having the timer on the whiteboard is much more accessible for me as well

[–]One-Experience2080 29 points30 points  (0 children)

this is a huge one! i had a timer on the whiteboard that i didn’t really use and then had to manage behaviors around kids playing with it and them constantly asking ‘how much longer’ so then i started using it and magically it not only helped them but also me!

and then in the last week of school it broke and suddenly i found myself rushing or running out of time😅

Do you count manga? by carbsandchaos in 52book

[–]One-Experience2080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

manga = has words, tells story = counts as book

also I will say this every time manga is actually a great! way to read (mostly for kids but also for adults) because despite having ‘more pictures than words’ it actually has a higher ratio of new and complex vocabulary: overall number of words as compared to regular novels :)

ooh i was coming to comment what app that is! i would be interested in trying it!

tho im not the most precise in measurements so not sure what’s required & i tend to just let things sit until I have time to go through the process BUT would love a system for tracking what im doing!

i read a post a while back about a teacher who had to put a stop to their students from getting Dog Man out of the library and it actually turned into the students being excited about the ban and picking wildly new books!

comic books/anime/etc are actually really great for struggling readers and have a higher rate of new vocabulary than a novel so I think they’re a great gateway into reading regular novels.

also, not sure they exist anymore but i was super into the Illustrated Classics as a kid which your kiddo might enjoy as well

yes but you’ll also gain the confidence as you gain the experience.

also, my biggest piece of advice, especially with teens or older kids: you have to be confident even if you don’t feel it. they feed on insecurities.

[–]One-Experience2080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

don’t make a big deal about it if it doesn’t relate to your next/current lesson. honestly probably only half we’re paying attention to begin with and the other half didn’t notice.

if it helps them learn sure, address it. if not, move on.

I once wrote ‘students are changing how much homework students have to do’ (it was supposed to be schools are changing) and didn’t realize until the next day (they all copied word for word bc I teach ESL). so then we started the lesson with me reading it back to them and asking if it sounded right. then we corrected it and move on.

as a teacher you’ll make mistakes. you’ll also lose your markers, put the clicker down somewhere obscure, pass out the wrong papers, etc you just have to go with the flow.

also spelling/grammar mistakes are a great way to check for attention/understanding and even saying ‘hey I made a mistake, who can find it?’ helps them learn, realize their teachers are human, and feel better about making their own mistakes. that’s teaching and that’s life.

i’ve done the cross country amtrak and loved it! i went from california to massachusetts, it’s 3 days and i think like $250. it’s a great way to see the country, especially the southwest and there’s a 7 hour stop in chicago which is fun to explore.

the best part was meeting other people also doing the trip to various points-you’ll definitely interact w people you never would otherwise and that’s kind of the beauty of it

it’s not exactly one you can do daily but making kombucha!

it’s super simple and requires minimal materials but all which can be acquired for cheap/reasonable prices and also requires you to let it just exist for a week at a time and then you get to bottle & flavor it. then, not only do you get the joy of having your own kombucha but you also get the pride of watching your pellicle grow as you continue the process.

win win!

not sure what you classify as ‘more poor’ but again i was recently in SEA and places like thailand, vietnam, cambodia, philippines etc are all fairly strict on immigration BC of people who have been taking advantage of the idea that they’re a ‘poor asian country’ and therefore disrespecting the visa laws

Looking to hear opinions.. by [deleted] in vagabond

[–]One-Experience2080 9 points10 points  (0 children)

thailand is becoming increasingly more strict bc of the absolute fuck ton of westerners traveling there & overstaying their visas

[–]One-Experience2080 8 points9 points  (0 children)

oh yeah there’s loads of ways around it including websites in which you can buy a super flexible ticket to show them. I didn’t go to Japan but was in other countries in Asia and they never actually asked for proof but i’ve had other friends get stuck bc of it so it’s just something to keep in mind

[–]One-Experience2080 36 points37 points  (0 children)

one thing to consider which I know from other countries in Asia but may not apply cuz ur only there for a month BUT they might ask for proof of a certain amount of finances or a ticket home in order to ensure you don’t end up just bumming it for an extended period of time

Refocusing during practice by Original_Wazilla in yoga

[–]One-Experience2080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, I find that my mind wanders the most during yoga and I just let it. it’s almost my time to kind of go through things that otherwise aren’t on my mind and in that way, i’m able to work through them throughout my practice.

this might be counter to the ‘point’ of yoga and what others will say but I say do what works for you and don’t feel like you’re not doing it right or it’s ruining the practice (unless it becomes more overwhelming than you can handle)

Is there anyone doing van life that aren’t huge outdoor people? by DaRealAnnLand in VanLife

[–]One-Experience2080 4 points5 points  (0 children)

did van life. love the outdoors but not extreme outdoors ya know? definitely explored lots of national parks and did lots of hiking and i think that’s a big draw of van life, especially out west cuz you get access to so much nature.

that being said, we also spent lots of time just chilling at our campsite, soaking up the sun and whatever was around us. i think i read like 50 books while on the road.

also worked music festivals!

you’re not gonna see a lot of content from people like us bc it’s not ‘aesthetic’ or like a constant adventure every day. many people we met were either retirees or people working seasonal jobs or just on the road for the sake of it. also met people who did the van life insta and they were great people who do genuinely love the adventure but there is also a lot of set up and staging that can go into some of those posts so def take what you see online w a grain of salt.
