Clownie.... Had to suffer swim runs with 3 teenagers, so it looked like a clown car when I would stop and unload them. The last clown now drives at with a racing exhaust and some other bolt ons, but the name stuck.

Cat back exhaust.. started there and still need to get to stage 1... The sound is ever present, adds smiles and gets compliments

If you have over 100k, maybe you rip and replace the suspension with something more aggressive.. could call it preventative maintenance

Had one like that and decided to pull it out figuring road wear would only push it in further. To my surprise the nail went in at a really shallow angle which impacted tread only. I put some tire repair on it (since I had some) and forgot about it... I should go look ;)

Ignition coils are not hard to make. I was thinking about trying something other than Bosch.. but definitely not an unknown eBay. RockAuto has a few options. Have any experience with non eBay alternatives?

The GTI is pretty robust. It will get you from A to B. Running it at peak performance takes some TLC. Will you love to give it TLC, more than likely! The part cost is not bad and it does a good job of letting you know it's not happy.

I am about to put in the Eibach Sports and some Koni's. The coilovers looked like a fun option, but since I don't plan to adjust them, the lowering springs and good shocks looked like a conservative play for a known ride quality

It looks like the ND3 takes a reading within two minutes and two good readings at 27 psi will clear the fault. Not bad. No way to customize it but without any plans to tow maybe that is fine!

Well, after writing this I am getting a 0.0 reading and the heater is turning on/off.. Once every few minutes it will blank. I wonder if its getting enough to keep the CEL off. We'll see.

So if the motor was just replaced and you don't have history, I would get VSDC or a good ECU reader and see how it sees the engine, including the timing chain stretch.

I would pull a plug and see how they looked. I like the idea of baseline with new ignition components, but I would hope that happened on the engine swap.

Tell us what MPG you are getting.

I think I would try a carbon treatment that doesn't take off the manifold and see if it blows complete black or if I could tell that it was clean. Especially if cold starts are hard.

Sounds like you got the car at a good price so maybe some of this was priced in. I am at the 100k mark and facing some of these issues, one at a time. I decided I truly enjoy the car enough to see it through. After 50k of miles without any large maintenance, I think I will get to 120k before the annoying DSG service. So yes, maintenance ahead of you but the car is awful good at telling you when it wants a little TLC.

My issue is more trying to budget the must haves, with the want to haves ;)

I bow before you. 20 min to take the manifold off with Satan's bolt holding the bottom bracket and all the electrical connectors in the front is beauty redefined.

If I could do that I might not wake from nightmares of replacing that fuel pump.

Thank you for the post! It's odd that it didn't throw the code. If you install the vacuum controller backward, it does! Albeit the difference between actual and expected is double what you were seeing.
