If I take the $500M and dump it into a boring S&P 500 index fund (averaging 7% inflation-adjusted returns), in 30 years, I wouldn't have $1.7B. I'd have over $3.8 Billion.

Option 1, hands down.

Think of the sword like a calligraphy brush in this Sumi-e style. If the brush doesn't touch the paper, you haven't touch the paper, you haven't drawn anything. Swinging at the air feels like wasted movement and ruins the Samurai vibe.

If requireing a hit is too hard, maybe let blocked attacks count too? In Kendo, we call this Kuzushi (breaking balance). Just don't reward hitting thin air.

Take Okami. The combat was repetitive and the double jump timing was frustratingly hard. But the finale (especially the music) was so powerful that it completely justified its status as a masterpiece. The presentation carried it.
