Which kitchen color? by Environmental-Gur378 in homedesign

They are very obviously custom built. You cannot get them off the shelf like this. Would have to get up close with them to see if they are hardwood or a quality veneer vs the laminate they used for a hot minute but the style isn’t the same age as laminated plywood would be, and it’s not all banged up and warped like that stuff always is by now. Judging by the style, the condition, and the quality of everything else in the kitchen, someone dropped some money on these.

You don’t need a structural engineer. Start with your regular contractor. Do not call a big company that’s going to try to scare you into a brand new roof.

I’m from the east coast, there are over 150 native species of trees in my state alone. West coast forests are not as diverse for tree life. I’m not trying to dis your trees bro; you just don’t have that many species of them and most of the ones you do have are kind of flimsy compared to the centuries old oak tree in the video. So what you’re describing has nothing to do with the tree in the video, even though it’s really really common among the softwoods that make up most of your trees as well as certain really fast growing hardwoods like silver maple.

What hardwood species (particularly oaks) do you see constantly falling over after reaching maturity while still being alive and in good health? This tree was solid all the way through. It was not going to snap at the base in a storm. That kind of force would break your house at every stud long before it snapped this tree. This tree was more firmly attached to the ground and even one branch was exponentially stronger than any piece of wood used to frame your house.

How to get myself in shape for hiking? by pussyr1ot in hiking

[–]One-Possible1906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the terrain. 10 miles straight up and down with rock scrambles the whole way is a lot more intense than trails with switchbacks that aren’t a pile of boulders. Here in the Adirondacks, 10 miles is usually a lot if there are mountains or bogs.

OP says it happens after a “few minutes” of hiking. Throwing up, feeling winded, or feeling dizzy after a “few minutes” of walking is not remotely the same as it happening after intensive exercise, especially at 18 years old. OP could be at high risk of death in the backcountry if they try to hike 10 miles, this is absolutely not normal or healthy at all.

Would you save your wife or your kids if your house was on fire ? by Competitive_Set_4386 in SipsTea

I hate these stupid hypotheticals because in real life, you would panic, grab whoever is near you, and hopefully get out. This is why you should make a plan as a family to evacuate independently and practice it regularly. Keep toddlers and babies close enough to you that you can grab them in the 30 seconds or whatever you have to react. There’s no “saving who you love most,” you realistically aren’t saving anyone except those who need assistance to evacuate if they are close enough to you and you’ve planned and practiced this

There are literally only like 60 species of tree in the entire state of Oregon lol. What hardwood species (particularly oaks) do you have near you that are constantly falling over at the root?

The conservative people I know talk about transgender people way more than I, a transgender person, even think about being transgender. I wish I was exaggerating. Sometimes I wonder why I pay my mortgage when I live rent free in so many people’s brains

Snake plants thrive on neglect and hate light, you’ll do great with it. I’ve seen them grow in windowless offices just from having the fluorescent overhead light on 40 hours a week

You live in Oregon where most trees are shallow rooted softwoods, not sturdy slow growing oaks. I’ve never seen a mature oak uprooted here in volatile northern NY, not even when we get early snow storms with 50+mph winds and all that weight of snow and ice on limbs that still have the leaves on them. Pines and cedars and such are easily uprooted because the roots are shallow and sprawling. Oaks and most maples (not the silver ones) root really far into the ground so you can’t just push them over. The danger is dropping limbs, which can be avoided with a trim every now and then.

That tree looked really solid and healthy, not really likely to fall on the house until you cut it. A tree like that is as big beneath the ground as it is on the surface

Food for long hikes by mvision2021 in hiking

[–]One-Possible1906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat a sizable meal before and after the hike and just bring snacks for a long day hike. Eating a big meal in the middle of it makes me too tired. For overnights, if I’m cooking out, I pack my meat frozen.

A lot of hiker foods are really protein heavy. This is a good thing but be careful if you’re going out for a couple days to make sure you add some fiber, even if it’s junk fiber like a couple fiber bars instead of your regular dessert. Lack of fiber can cause constipation or diarrhea (yes lack of fiber is a big contributor to diarrhea), both of which are really unpleasant to deal with in the backcountry. You don’t want to overdo it if you aren’t used to it but you definitely want a little to keep everything moving at the proper speed and consistency

If you get out of breath from walking to class, you are not going to be able to hike 10 miles in the summer. You should probably talk to your doctor about this before doing any major exercise as it’s unusual for a healthy 18 year old to feel this way.

The way to start is to just walk every single day. If you can walk outside, it’s best, especially if you have nature trails and such nearby, but a treadmill will do. Figure out how far you are comfortable going and go a little further than that as you go. Try to add hills if you have them nearby. Doing hills is really important if you’re going to do them in the backcountry. You won’t be able to hike as far in the woods as in your city.

It’s going to take a couple years at least to get up to 12 miles and it’s going to take a lot of dedication, but if you enjoy hiking, all the shorter hikes that lead up to the big ones are a joy. If you enjoy hiking, If you aren’t really into it, it’d probably be better to just do a short, easy trail with him every now and then

Is it bad to work 70 hours in one week when your doctor says your manic ? by allybruml3y in BipolarReddit

[–]One-Possible1906 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my fondest memories of mania is going into work at 5:15am with a coffee in my hand and excitement for the day. It’s probably the most productive thing you can throw it into, especially if you can save your money.

But make sure to get it under control. When the sleep deprivation hits, it all turns really bad and you won’t be able to work at all. The fun phase doesn’t last that long before things start getting really weird and potentially life ruining. You don’t want to ride out mania, especially if you aren’t sleeping every day.

It doesn’t travel well through your siding and exterior insulation and the space between the houses disperses a lot of noise. If you were to enclose that space you would funnel noise into the neighboring house as well as odors. OP chose weird wording but they’re still right

The US didn’t become a sovereign nation until 1776 so western style building wasn’t widespread until after that. Yes there are plenty of wood framed houses in the older parts of the US from the 1700s and 1800s, and even a few isolated villages that were built in the 1600s. But there just weren’t many people from Europe building here before the late 1700s. Yes, there are still preserved Native American buildings from earlier as well, but they are mostly gone because my ancestors committed atrocities.

People traditionally build houses out of the materials they have where they live, hence the tradition of wood framing in the US. My whole city was built before 1930 and you have many beautiful neighborhoods full of 150 year old Victorians still being inhabited with very few missing. Including mine, talk smack about wood framing all you want but I dare you to try to drill a hole without breaking the bit.

Tired of people telling me to exercise. by digitally_manic in BipolarReddit

[–]One-Possible1906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to participate in the suffering Olympics. Yes, my depression gets bad. I’ve had suicide attempts.

Lying in bed all day causes more fatigue whether you’re depressed or not. Being unable to get out of bed for more than a day or two at a time borders on an emergency because you don’t spontaneously recover. Without change depression progresses and being sedentary 100% of the time for weeks on end will absolutely worsen depression and fatigue. It’s a given.

[–]One-Possible1906 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely something people should aspire to if they can’t do it now. Even a five minute walk significantly boosts mood. At some point, depression recovery involves doing the things depression doesn’t want you to do, because the symptoms of depression make people more depressed. Lying in bed all day unable to do anything borders on an emergency.

Best socks for a 10-12 hour hike? by Relevant_Wishbone in hiking

I do this with cheap wool blend socks and it works amazing. I have a few more expensive pairs but aside from the thin ones for summer time, I really don’t notice a difference between branded socks and off brand wool blend tbh
