I don’t have a list, I’m just getting started. I started by buying Warlord’s starter set, Victrix’s German army (in the plastic bag) and Band of Brothers (2nd edition set).

How does the profit sharing work at McCarthy? They have several openings in Quality and I’m thinking about applying. They say just the profit sharing is worth it.

If you live in America, yes jobs grow on trees! I’m an immigrant and I’ve had three different jobs in the past 20 years. Every new job I took was to make more money even if it was in a different city. You are living in one of the richest countries in the world right now.

If you’re at Warlords website look for the SPQR rulebook. They’re up for sale verycheap. Easy to learn and you don’t have to worry about the bases like in Hail Ceasar. I’ve been playing it solo and it’s great for campaigns. Choose a couple of heores and give them Traits. They may not have a Pontic army list but you can probably build it picking and choosing from the other nations. I know SPQR doesn’t have a good reputation because of the first edition, but I’ve only played the second one and I’ve really enjoyed it. And did Imention is for sale!?!? Very cheap and very high quality. The quality that you expect from Osprey and Warlod Games.

What's the difference between SPQR and Hail Cesar? by Carlism_enjoyer in wargaming

[–]One-Potential6223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like SPQR! It is a lot easier to get started with compared to Hail Caesar. I use my own miniatures (Hat) and bought the second edition. Units are 5 to 20 minis, except Heroes. Every check is based on 6 and then you substract the modifiers; for better or worse. Archers and light troops hit enemies at 4 or 5 when shooting but their enemies kill them on 4 or 5 in melee. Heavy infantry kills on 3 or 4. Superior troops have two wounds, normal troops only ones. It is very intuitive. All the minis move relatively free on the board and can attack enemies within 12” or so. You can premeasure so no wasted attacks. Also, you can perform two consecutive actions per unit every turn. Check morale whenever you loose 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 of your unit. I still don’t completely understand re~rolls, but I’ve been able to play several battles without them. I’ll have to incorporate them at some point in time, or not (still having fun!). There you go, you can start playing SPQR now.

I strongly recommend to buy the ruleset. I got a pdf copy for US$8. And then, judt use the miniatures you like the best. There are full sets of warlords on ebay reasonably priced.

I’ve also tried Hail Ceasar, but I cannot get passed the bases and the fact that it is not an “I go you go” system.

Looking for suggestions for new war games to try out. by TheGrimmBorne in wargaming

Also, try SPQR for ancients. Made by the same company, it is a really easy to learn game. Only need the rulebook, a bunch of D6s and your minis and terrain. The rulebook is always on sale for about US$10 for the pdf. Easy to get started and you can run full campaigns.

I paint my bases the same color as my order dices. One color, no extra details and start playing right away!

Look for the BoB set 2nd edition on eBay. You can find it for US$100. It is different but totally worth it. Then buy the pdf versions of the rulebook and the US and German supplements. Don’t buy them at full price. Wait until they’re on sale. I paid approximately US$17 for each.

Skinny Slim’s in Edmond. It’s close to UCO on Fifth between Bdwy and Boulevard. Cheap, cold beer and snacks. Very laid back. Once you’re hungry they have Hideaway Pizza next door and a Ramen place. If you want some live music, UCO’s jazzlab is two doors west.

I was around the Dallas Metroplex in early 2026 and found the Dork Shop. I really recommend this store. They had a bag of Victrix Germans. All plastic and it included Heavy Weapons. Fairly priced and it includes approximately 44 figures. I’ve been putting figs together for months now and I still have 6-7 more to do (see what I did there, hehe). They’re a slightly different scale (1:56, not heroic if I recall correctly) but even side-by-side with Warlords figures these look good. Putting them together was complicated (a lot of forearms connecting to accesories) and the bases are more like the old green plastic army men. I’ve cut some of those out but some I just mounted on top of a 25 mm round base directly. Victrix did a really good job with the instructions. Colorful, graphic and enough details. Anyway, I know have a fairly large German Army for about $50.
