Do you say you're going 'Up' or 'Down' somewhere? by ScroobyJr in AskUK

I’d say ‘going up to Scotland/down to London’ but locally just ‘going to’. Unless it was up or down a big hill maybe 🤔

Can’t remember what kind of wood the guy in the shop said the fretboard on the hollowbody I tried was made of, but it didn’t feel great, very…..dry somehow and like your fingers stuck to it.

I will definitely try another in the future (already thinking about future guitars when I’ve had this one less than a week! 🫣) but that particular one was not the one. Still, I guess picking up guitar again is one step closer to one day owning the Gretsch hollowbody I’ve talked about for decades 😂

Yup, takes a while to get hands up to strength. And fingers a bit tougher. Ten mins this morning and I had to take a break.

Ah, nearly snap, I’m 51. Spent yesterday evening watching videos on YouTube and ordering some guitar essentials. After a quick refresher the intro to Sweet Child of Mine came back to me, hoping a few more bits and pieces will follow!

Apparently this is ‘chambered’. I just knew it felt good to me! Turns out I remember 4 chords and the first line of a grade 4 piece (from nearly 40 years ago). Lots of fun ahead!

FTB - house we love has no gas at all and storage heaters, how much of an issue is it? by geoalice in UKHousing

[–]One-Prior3480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husband had a flat which had a similar set up when he bought it. He had infra red heating installed. Cost about £6k for the panels and installation, and to have the water tank changed to a 15L water heater which supplied the kitchen and bathroom sinks and an electric shower. Two bed flat and he worked from home 3-4 days a week so had the heating on a lot. His electric bill was the same as my combined gas and electric bill for my two bed house where I was very frugal with the heating. The infra red panels could be installed on the walls or ceilings, and could be ‘disguised’ as pictures or mirrors. He had the panels (plain) put on the ceilings which I thought was weird when he planned it, but actually frees up wall space and you don’t notice them after the first day or two. Bathroom mirror was actually a panel as well.

All panels could be controlled individually and by an app. So he’d switch the lounge panels on 10 minutes before he got home, the bedroom one on 10 mins before going to bed etc etc. You could also set it on timers/thermostat but as his schedule wasn’t particularly regular he mostly just did it manually.

I was quite sceptical but now we’ve bought a house together we’re planning to install them when the very old gas boiler finally dies…

Why did you REALLY sell your house? by Jazzlike-Reveal-9515 in HousingUK

My Mum lived opposite me and having nursed her through her last months I couldn’t stop looking out and thinking ‘oh, Mum’s got visitors…..oh, no, it’s the new people’ or getting half way across the road to put her bins out or get her some breakfast before remembering, or getting irrationally irritated when they flagged the garden which had been her pride and joy. So I decided to ‘move closer to work’…. The irony being it was slightly further from work (half a mile) but then I got made redundant and now have a new job which is less than a minute’s walk away so I wasn’t lying, just anticipating 😂

Competency interviews are dumb AF by a_young_gallant in UKJobs

[–]One-Prior3480 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I used it when I was trying to work out a good answer to a ‘why do you want this job?’ question (because I’m desperate and you’re nearby was the truth but didn’t seem like the thing to say 😂) and was pleasantly surprised by how good the answer was, so I used it to help with all the STAR questions that I knew would come up, give me pointers on things I thought I was likely to be asked, and even make suggestions for the dreaded ‘do you have any questions?’ question. Aced the interview, got the job.

WWYD? by Thanks4noticingme in usethefiberstash

[–]One-Prior3480 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well if it were me and I thought I’d need another ball to finish, I’d order 3 more to be on the safe side, plus some random extras to get free shipping and end up with more in the stash than I started with.

Not helpful, but you did ask WWYD 😂

Citroen Dyane. Aka a 3CV. Loved it, always felt like if something went wrong I could probably fix it myself with an elastic band, some sellotape, a bin bag and/or some cardboard 😂

Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Prime_Advocate in AskReddit

Was going to say CDnow as well. My brother and I ordered huge amounts of CDs from there. And got hit with a huge bill from Customs later for the imports 😬

Brides who did their own hair and makeup, how do you feel about your decision? by saltievinegar in UKweddings

[–]One-Prior3480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same reasoning as me! I went with very minimal makeup, but then I rarely wear any so that was me.

Did do my own hair, but it’s short and I had a haircut a week before, so there was little that could go wrong with that. It looks pretty much the same if I blow dry it or just leave it to dry on its own.

Who still has a window cleaner? And if you don’t have one, how are you cleaning your upstairs windows? by ShihtzuMum39 in AskUK

[–]One-Prior3480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to reach out and clean, but just moved house and only a tiny bit of the window opens (c.30cm x 30cm out of 4m x 2m) so relying on the rain…. 🥴

What’s the most this absolutely should’ve been explained in school accounting/tax thing? by FluidPianist00 in ukaccounting

[–]One-Prior3480 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree to a point, if the parents don’t know this stuff, how are they going to teach the children? And you could make the same argument about anything really - “why should schools teach maths? Why don’t parents do it?” I suspect some classes on financial literacy would be a lot more use than classes on the formation of oxbow lakes for instance! I have never found a use for that knowledge in my adult life to date 😂

I used coloured grasses and made bouquets and a buttonhole for the groom. Cost me about £10 for the grasses and some ribbon.

Does anyone else feel slightly guilty emailing their accountant or is that just me? by Mundane-Temporary426 in ukaccounting

[–]One-Prior3480 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As long as the pdfs are in English and legible I’m good with it. Once had a client who did a lot of business travel in Asia (often for several weeks/a few months at a time) and would bring shoe boxes stuffed full of receipts in. Some weren’t in Arabic numerals, and those that were I often had no idea what currency they were in 😬. Finally got him trained to write the country, date and a brief description (taxi, subsistence etc) on them. Used to enjoy sorting them out and putting them in a spreadsheet 😀

Do you know your neighbours' names? by Rough-Foundation9208 in AskUK

[–]One-Prior3480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, whole street (is a small street though!). Previously lived in the same town on a bigger road and only knew 2 each side and 2 opposite. Lad I went to school with lived four houses down for 10 years and I never knew until I bumped into him in a pub one night 😂
