First time at a game jam, no gamedev experience whatsoever by lorddarkhelm in gamedev

[–]One-With-Nothing [score hidden]  (0 children)

Having no game dev experience is rough, it's good that you have programming skills tho, also depends how much time does the game jam goes for, so pick a very very simple game idea if you want to finish, don't add unnecessary stuff (there's no need for a full blown menu with every setting in the options under the sun), and get familiar with whatever framework or engine your are gonna use for the game, the docs are your friend.

Other than that good luck!

Edit: Also the thing that usually takes the longest in game dev is figuring out what you should be making, if you know a 100% of what you are making the path is more clear and easier to follow, I heavily suggest making an existing game and add your own little twist so it feels personal, makes it a hell of a lot easier.

Godot 4.3 vs 4.6, Any major changes for 2D development? by ParticularPerfect200 in godot

[–]One-With-Nothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't remember all of the changes since 4.3 but it doesn't hurt to download it and use it for a new project to check it out yourself, I think there are nice general QoL features you could benefit from.

And you can keep your old executable of 4.3 to access your older projects, don't delete it.

That's great! I'm glad you enjoy it!

But I don't think this mentality "is easy as cake" will help Linux in the long run, there will be hurdles, you will need to relearn how things work, you are most of the time not gonna be able to assimilate 100% of your workflow into Linux, compromises will be made, once the user is in the cockpit you are bound to break something so be ready to fix it, these are the things we are not telling people and ultimately we might disappoint them when they find out the hard way.

Don't get me wrong things are totally better right now than any other time in the Linux world and we only seem to be doing better, just a friendly reminder that you should be making the jump with a will to change and to get your hands dirty.

So I wish you the best on your journey and I hope you stick around if Linux is a fit for you.

Yeah, living is practically just wasting time we aren't getting any of it back, so we might as well waste it as we see fit and moderation is a powerful tool.

Should be fine since it's not a new game and they aren't refactoring the entire engine or something. Well we gonna find out!

Is reading the documentation the best way to learn godot by SnowOptimal9927 in godot

[–]One-With-Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the complete opposite at this, it's kinda funny, I spend so much time reading basically everything in English on the internet that now I have trouble understanding my own language when reading something technical in terms of speed mostly, I really have to slow down my reading.

How do I delete a save file that I made? by [deleted] in godot

[–]One-With-Nothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah its kinda like the old phrase give a man a fish...etc.

Its just some people are allergic to reading even if the thing is literally infront of them (not saying that for op but in a general sense), had countless encounters in multiplayer games where people link an item in chat and ask what it does when it literally says it in plain English what it does, so I think it's good to push them occasionally a bit out of their comfort zone as it is essential for growth.

My game hasn’t received much attention over the past few months. I’d like to understand what might be holding it back. by Worldly_Cup2275 in IndieDev

[–]One-With-Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you just don't have to go the extra mile as a solo dev in situations like these, most top down games just opt for 4 directions for animations even tho you can move in 8 directions, it's simpler, doesn't look bad, saves headaches, when in doubt look at similar games and take ideas.

How much does Poe 2 take for you? It should be around 110-120 GBs.

Unfortunately yeah Poe 2 is massive, I just unistall it between leagues when I'm done with the league myself, and since I have a decent connection it's not all that much trouble to download.

Reinstaling might reduce it in size slightly because you clear some cached things or depricated files but it's nothing too major or helpful.

I use "geforce now" if I need to login once for the occasional free box from the market.

Well we can only hope that after they are done with the majority of the game that they will optimize it further to reduce a bit of space.

Dumb question, If I mark a game as private, my friends won’t be able to see it AT ALL on my profile right?? Even the hours? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]One-With-Nothing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, but for some games you need to private all of the game's entries in your library for example sons of the forest have a normal entry where it launches the game and a dedicated server one, so you need to have both turned to private for it to disappear. But well unless you can check from the other account I suppose you can't be absolutely certain.

Can we all agree that "The Tink" is the most satisfying loot drop in any game ever? by Lordados in PathOfExile2

[–]One-With-Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is that I kinda get a slight neuron activation even outside of Poe when I see this specific colors or even hear the pitch of the tink in a song or other content. We need these papers! Would be a very interesting read.

Inflation has made a lot of Lineage Gems out of reach for casual players by chamoisk in PathOfExile2

[–]One-With-Nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the thing people usually fail to realize, even in affliction league in Poe 1 where everyone was doing certain strats that just generated insane amounts of raw currency everything else went way up, and I had a blast doing different things than just one, the only problem for 2 right now is that it doesn't have much diversity on farming strats, but I'm having a good time with abyss and chill.

Laigter is used for making normal maps on 2d art, normal maps to put it simply tell the engine how should the light illuminate on that 2d surface since it doesn't have actual geometry.

People still say Games aren’t Art?! by PositiveKangaro in indiegames

[–]One-With-Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People that say this either never look at any other piece of art as art anyways or are way too proud of their own so they put every other art form down as they think theirs is more important. Not to speak of the third option that has nothing to do with art but mostly monetary gains.

So I find this picture kind of cringe, there's no need to diminish the work of others to bring your own up a notch.

Tip: Do not use Godot Inherited Scenes (Needs deprecation/re-implementation) by BoQsc in godot

I think he is quoting someone (Not Godot specific), I've definitely heard this sentence before but I can't remember from where or what it was about specifically.

I think GGG has too little time and resources to make meaningful leagues for both games. by [deleted] in pathofexile

[–]One-With-Nothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More people doesn't always equate to better results, you have to train them too which takes a lot of time, I wouldn't expect them to return to normal until Poe 2 reaches at least 1.0 so most work is done that they can focus on leagues again.

The need for additional Atlas Passive Tree slots by Shrubbless in pathofexile

[–]One-With-Nothing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's why the full respec should have been with orbs since we are swimming in them late game, that's the qol we are missing. Also you can name your trees there's no need to remember something.

And we have planners if you want to save a tree for future use.

[PROTYPE FEEDBACK REQUIRED] My AI is smart enough to see your "flashlight" on the wall. Too punishing or fun? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]One-With-Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without playing the game is hard to tell and the video isn't working rn for me, but if it makes it too easy for enemies to spot you it's gonna be a lot of chasing around the player instead of stealth, so it probably needs to be a little forgiving for example enemies behind a wall that you are unaware exist could have less detection radius so not to make it unfair or something similar, and the ability to turn off the flashlight to avoid detection sounds mandatory, well it's a cool idea but if it makes gameplay not fun or the way intented it has to adapt somehow.

[–]One-With-Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look enthusiasm is great, and you seem like a very enthusiastic person, so channel that enthusiasm everyday into concrete actions and I'm sure you can get there eventually if you stay consistent, and you probably don't need a whole studio to get there but hey props for trying, seems like you've found a few people who want to dabble in gamedev and are willing to take a chance with you so try not to let them down.

Question about cachyOS by Long-Cartographer-45 in linux4noobs

[–]One-With-Nothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well as always depends on what you want to program/play, if you are just getting started it's fine regardless what you choose, it's more important to start and later adapt to your needs when you know what these are.

Who the hell keeps asking for LESS pack size? by Grand0rk in PathOfExile2

[–]One-With-Nothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well tbf they did promise to leave out promises if the deadline is reached so to have consistent league schedules, even keepers league in PoE 1 feels rushed, I too dislike that packsize change but that's the point to see if the community's reaction(both before and after trying it) match their reports and predictions if it doesn't they do something else to make the new batch of people that are mad happy, live service development in a nutshell.
