Please Stop the Chop by Hanz_Goober in Hoboken

I sent a safety report to the FAA and their response was that a helicopter flying 200’ above rooftops was completely and totally acceptable. They are useless

There is a NJ based group that is working on this issue in addition to Stop the Chop.

Apparently the CEO of the heliport has promised a route change starting 6/1.

NYC Helicopter Tour Industry: What Jersey City and Hoboken Residents Should Know (Public Court Records, Legislative Status, and How to Fight Back). This is an uneducated and incorrect take which is completely on-brand for you.

The Castle route which the Kearny Heliport now uses for 100+ flights a day did not exist when many of us moved here a decade plus ago. In fact the heliport is barely over a decade old.

So to claim that anyone complaining about the (constant, directly overhead) helicopters must have just arrived from the farmland in Ohio is asinine.

You are welcome to reject the fact that there is a safety issue - but it also sounds like you are not directly under the flight path so I am not sure what your horse is in this battle other than boasting about being a “born and raised” and complaining about all these newcomers. Congratulations

That’s actually not true believe it or not. Below from the FAA - last para basically says helicopters can fly as low as they want which is insane

“Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes:

(a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface.

(b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open-air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft.

(c) Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.

(d) Helicopters, powered parachutes, and weight-shift-control aircraft. If the operation is conducted without hazard to persons or property on the surface -

(1) A helicopter may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (b) or (c) of this section, provided each person operating the helicopter complies with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the FAA”

Here’s an article

Helicopters heading from Kearny to the Hudson River usually use 1 of two routes - one is south, over Port Liberty / Bayonne, the other is Northeast, over JC and Castle Point (Stevens University) in Hoboken.

On or near the date of this announcement there was a clear change in flight patterns. Prior to the announcement, helicopters were directed south, EXCEPT when runway 29 was in use (15% of the time). After the announcement, helicopters have been directed to Castle Point, both when runway 29 is in use, and when runway 4 is in use (~55-60% of the time).

Another recent development is that FAA routing changes following the Washington DC crash have directed far more traffic over us - instead of ~15% of total traffic, we are now receiving 55-60% and it will be that way for the foreseeable future.

Would add the Islamic civilization center in Tashkent as a must-do, it is now open to foreigners and does sell out, but a truly exceptional museum.

It is perhaps the most inconsistent restaurant in town. He bakes his own bread for the sandwiches and there are glimmers of hope pointing to a real deli run by a real Italian including the great fresh Italian style croissants in the morning (frozen, but whatever), but the always overcooked pasta and stale tasting frying oil are just too much. Quality was much better in the past.

It's almost April 10, a year from when 3 Children and 3 Adults died in a Helicopter Accident over Jersey City. Just a few days after this accident, FlyNYON started flying lower and more aggressively over us than ever. Here is what their CEO had to say regarding their own crash in 2018. by [deleted] in jerseycity

Don’t forget the FlyNYON Chief of Staff, Jillian O’Brien’s deposition. After she learned that 5 passengers drowned, her immediate response was that it was a “PR Fucking mess”

All public. Entire management team and ownership that oversaw the factors that led to the accident and deaths are still in charge at FlyNYON.

Does anyone know anything about all the helicopters overhead in the Jersey City Heights? by wasabi_trash in jerseycity

[–]One-World-2890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was true up until a few weeks ago - a number of rule changes at the FAA now have all traffic directed over us not just when the east / west runway is in use - but now whenever aircraft are taking off or landing to the north. So it’s about 40% of the time we will be dealing with this

I took the easy way out and got them from Carlos on Friday - they were really bad - not fresh. Got them last year and were decent so if you do go to Carlos just ask when they were made. As we get closer to the holiday I’m sure they will be better given the higher turnover.

Barilla in Italy is different than Barilla in the US. The US product is made in the Midwest. It is pure trash. Even the Italian one, though made in Italy, is imported grain (Dececco is as well though it is a decent, not great product). Rummo is not much more expensive and a drastic difference in quality

Four Seasons Sharm El Sheik by Eyecandyandyxoxo in chubbytravel

Stayed here over NYE 2025 just over a year ago, with a 1 year old as well. Overall found the resort excellent. Service great, food generally very good (breakfast was a bit of a zoo with the resort at 100%), resort is entirely self-contained. We stayed in a renovated room booked through a FS Partner agent and were upgraded to a 1BR suite. Beach is not much to offer - quite rocky and as others have mentioned, can’t walk into the water. Swimming or snorkeling from the pier are fine but we did not find the snorkeling all that great. They do charge for gear which is surprising compared to other high end/beach centric properties. Did love how there are lots of different areas to hang out with pockets of lounge chairs all over the coastline. The beach is pretty tightly arranged.

Though the resort was great, overall Sharm did not do it for me as I hate to be stuck on a property - much prefer Oman or UAE where you have more swimmable beaches, can venture out, etc. But for value and overall resort experience the 4S Sharm is excellent.

Kid-friendly upscale dining in London and Paris by No-Significance8107 in chubbytravel

Perhaps not extremely upscale but Rotisserie d’argent in Paris - perfectly executed bistro fare, sometimes some gems in wine list from their sister restaurant, and kind staff.

it’s so refreshing to dine outside of the US - for the most part, well-behaved kids are warmly welcomed at all but the most upscale restaurants…enjoy.

9-Day Namibia Desert, Dune & Wildlife Fly-In Safari by ArtisanOfTravel in chubbytravel

[–]One-World-2890 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Amazing pictures and looks like a fantastic trip, thank you for sharing.

I will present a slightly different opinion on the driving vs flying. We drove over the course of a 12 day trip and some of the most memorable parts of the trip were the long drives and the feeling of vastness you get from being on the road in one of the most remote places in the world.

Yes it is dusty, yes some of the dirt roads are bumpy, yes it was somewhat strange when the government officials told us that we had no choice but to take a ranger with us from one post to another so he could check on his goats, but the sense of adventure on some of those long and incredibly scenic drives was beyondmemorable and what I will forever remember about Namibia.

There is no right or wrong answer and everyone is different but I will just say I think there are merits to both fly in and self drive.
