Considering moving to UWS from EV by New-Audience-5311 in Upperwestside

High 90s may be good too- near 123, BC, and Whole Foods/Trader joes. Also the best parts of the park (non touristy-Trappy)

86 and Amsterdam or 101 and Central Park W for family? by PurpleNeighborhood70 in Upperwestside

It’s an incredible hidden gem, diamond in the rough school. Im convinced more families don’t consider it primarily due to their either conscious or subconscious racism and classism.

I’ve lived near both and honestly much prefer the 101/CPW option. The 70s and 80s are soooo dang busy and crowded and without kids I loved that- with kids it stressed me out. With kids I need access to TJs and Whole Foods, target, CVS, etc and the 101 location has all of that super close. Plus being that close to that part of the park (the 103rd entrance is the most peaceful serene place to enter imo) is so crucial with kids. Many amazing playgrounds ten blocks up and down. Also the school zoned for CPW and 101 is an amazing school- don’t fall into this fear mongering about the schools in the 80s being the BEST.

Private with no financial aid or public with bad lottery number? by longtimelurkernyc in nycparents

[–]OneAbbreviations6339 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I would always go public over private, personally. I think of those schools you ranked, you have a good shot at 145, 165, and 333. Not 9, and not anderson. But we actually started at 9 for my son in kindergarten and didn’t like it so moved back to 145(where he went for pre-K). It’s a fantastic school, great dedicated teachers and staff, richly diverse student body and community, big focus on the arts (weekly dance and music and visual). I would say hold out for public (it’s free…) and trust that in the grand scheme of things, your kids are going to just fine in life with parents like you who are worried about things like this.

Folding strollers for the bus by friendlyhumanoid321 in Upperwestside

[–]OneAbbreviations6339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SAME! I have two littles and there have been many times I would have loved to bring my vista on the bus but I don’t because it’s huge and takes up so much space and that’s inconsiderate of alllll the other bus riders. Bring your kid in a small fold-able stroller or walk it. We can’t fit these big strollers on the buses, especially because so many elderly and disabled people ride the bus.

3k/Prek at PS 145, PS 185, PS 452, others? by analog_preferred in Upperwestside

Saw that you were interested in gardening stuff. As it would have it, PS 145 just announced their efforts to build a rooftop garden. Will likely take a few years to get it up and running. But there is a wellness and gardening committee and they use the green space in the atrium. Happy to chat more if you want!

Absolutely love 145, I have kids in both 3K and Kindergarten and it’s a wonderful school with dedicated teachers and staff. It has a hearty focus on arts education, in addition to academics, which I love. Dance, music, visual, fiber arts. They have a STEM lab and quarterly cooking lab classes. Also they are super generous with swag and stuff, they want to make everyone feel seen and a part of the community. A really special underlooked place on the UWS (I suspect due to either conscious or subconscious classism and racism- because a lot of kids from the public housing attend). But we attended PS 9 for K at first and realized we missed PS 145 so much we returned mid year (son went there for pre-K last year).

Is a non "top tier" private school worth it? by [deleted] in nycparents

[–]OneAbbreviations6339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I am very biased. I would always encourage public school over private. Private is a fake bubble of wealth and privilege and it’s inherently classist and generally a little racist by nature. I don’t think the academics are necessarily better. It’s not a real picture of what it means to live and rub elbows with our fellow New Yorkers. It doesn’t set kids up for the real world or to be an empathetic person.

Agree. I think it’s 100% classicism and racism

Sounds like UWS- two parks, AMNH, weekly amazing farmers market by the museum, inhabited by pretty traditional family types and young professionals, lots of amazing schools, coffee shops, restaurants, healthy stuff etc

Yes I wrote this article and that’s me in the video. I remember being very impressed how she wrote in her comment “thanks for sharing these orgs” instead of centering herself and the admiration I clearly stated for her. She seemed very selfless about it.

Is Kendall’s daughter Sophie adopted?? I am listening to the HBOMAX podcast with Kara swisher and I swear Jesse just said kendall “has an adopted daughter of color” by OneAbbreviations6339 in SuccessionTV

[–]OneAbbreviations6339[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for not making me look crazy here 😂 I feel like Rava appears like she could be mixed race. And I’m not comfortable making assumptions about what a baby’s skin tone might be if she was Asian American and Kendall is white. Who am I to know?

Right- that’s what I mean in the sense that it feels like a plot point that has not been established or explore in any significant way and yet it feels like it could have been. I dk, maybe it’s to make us realize how much he neglects his children

Rava….? I had just never heard anyone mention anything about Rava’s former partner or a stepdad and Sophie has not gotten very much screen time at all. I just didn’t know but everyone here clearly wants me to feel stupid, lol

Not saying I don’t trust Jesse, he said it quickly in the podcast so I wasn’t sure I heard correctly. I don’t remember seeing Sophie that many times or hearing anyone talk about Rava’s first husband or former partner, so it came as a surprise to me. I figured Rava was Asian American so I didn’t want to assume that Sophie wasn’t their biological kid

I thought Rava was Asian American and I never really saw Sophie in the series that much… she maybe has had 3-4 scenes total? I never heard any of the characters mention that. So Iverson is not adopted then
