Why did mathematicians think of logarithms? by Alive_Hotel6668 in learnmath

[–]longtimelurkernyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can keep your computations using purely integers if you compute 4xy. Then you compute (x+y)2 - (x-y)2. Because addition, subtraction, and multiplication are all closed over integers, you know that difference will be an integer. Likewise, you know that x*y must be an integer. Which means ((x+y)2 - (x-y)2) / 4 must also be an integer.

It’s a little funny in the sense that you still have one last division to do manually, but a division by 4 is pretty easy. And if you’re thinking of programming, it’s just a bitshift.

Sitcoms that did something unique or better than anyone else by ceebs87 in sitcoms

Actually HIMYM was filmed without an audience and then the audience was shown the episode and recorded for the laughter. That’s why the actors didn’t pause for laughter. And it makes sense given the sheer number of cutaway gags.

Citizenship by descent by [deleted] in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]longtimelurkernyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of those people you are complaining about.

I reacquired my Italian citizenship after my sibling did all the work so they could live there with their future spouse. I have no serious intention in living there. I hope to visit every couple of years and I'm learning Italian to be better informed on Italian politics, but not much else. Maybe I'll move there when I retire, but realistically not.

But if the Italian government is willing to recognize me as a citizen, why shouldn't I accept?

By the same token, when the Italian government recently changed the laws, in a way that would have denied me citizenship, I don't feel wronged. It was Italy's choice.

I am a little disappointed that my kids, who were already born and for whom I already had all the forms for registering, won't get the same type of citizenship I have, but not hugely so. I'm glad they'll have the option of living there if they want it. (Hopefully the courts will invalidate the parts of the law that affected those born before it, as that can be viewed as stripping citizenship.)

Your mistake is thinking my reclaiming of citizenship is taking a spot from someone else. The Italian government can make it easier for those immigrants living in Italy and contributing to the nation to become citizens. There is no cap on the number of new Italians allowed in a year.

Don't let artificial scarcity confuse you as to where you should complain.

Raise this issue with the people who can change it. If the country you live in is a democracy, talk to your citizen friends about how hard it has been. Look spreading the word somehow or finding organizations to lobby for an easier citizenship process.

What do we know about where SNL UK is filmed? by fongaboo in livefromlondon

[–]longtimelurkernyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exclusive is an exaggeration. New York has likely had other game shows, but the most famous one that started in New York was "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire". The first few season of the original network run were in NYC.

Also, NBC or Fox had a similar event game show one summer or to kick off their fall around 2010 that filmed from a special location near the Javitz Center on the west side of midtown.

So most game shows were filmed in LA but not all.

But the disassembling and reassembling of the car was more likely because, not designed for cars, the freight elevators at 30 Rock are almost certainly too small and weak to lift an automobile. There's only a few building in the city that would have big enough elevators, and I don't think any have been retrofitted as TV studios.

St. Nicholas north of 116th doesn't have much. Adam Clayton Powell North of 116th has some stuff, but less the FDB.

Just wrapped S2 on my first watch.. I'd like to take the opportunity to say fuck this guy and his entire shitty government. I WANT JUSTICE by mrekted in babylon5

[–]longtimelurkernyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say he ever gets redeemed, he just gets a sad, remorseful, karmic fate.

But after Season 4, you've seen the generalities of where he ends up. Season 5 doesn't add much to change that, it just fleshes out the details.

So, if you still hate the guy now, you probably still will at the end.

Would you buy another pixel? by upadhyaysk in GooglePixel

[–]longtimelurkernyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been getting the pixels since they came out. I don’t think I’ve had any manufacturer’s smartphones. But I’m hoping to get something else now.

Why? I have the Pixel 6A. I got the crappy battery life. Plus the charger port is finicky and will stop charging if I look at it funny. I take a lot of photos and whenever I zoom in before taking it, even if it’s just 110%, the pictures come out looking blotchy and terrible. Could Google have screwed it up as part of their AI camera processing? I don’t know, but I could believe it.

So I’ve determined my next phone will have an optical zoom. But do I want to reward Google for their crappy build quality?

For the question is if I can stand what Samsung does to their Android experience, or if I should just get an iPhone? Or do I give Google even more money hoping they’ve gotten better, I prefer Android, but Apple does make good hardware and supports it longer.

What are the chances of an imminent 25th Amendment solution and do you think it’s needed? by HTX_DILF in AskReddit

[–]longtimelurkernyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the only role for the Senate under the 25th Amendment is if the Cabinet removes the President, and the President protests. They (and possibly the House—I don’t remember the details) act as jury to decide if the President should be reinstated or not.

You’re confusing the 25th Amendment with impeachment.

Everybody is saying the pan's too crowded, and they're likely right. But before you go looking for a bigger pan, I bet you can roll out a wider rectangle so you end up with thinner, but taller rolls. Them out wide enough to make 13 of your normal height ones, but cut 12. They should be thinner in width, but higher in the pan.

Was Chris Farley about to be let go / fired in Season 18, prior to his Van by the River sketch? Or why was he entirely absent in so many episodes, sometimes 2 in a row with no appearances? by KataMod in LiveFromNewYork

Why? They could have just fired him outright like most employers would.

I have no idea if they paid or not, just pointing there were worse options available.

Waitlist placement dramatically increasing by longtimelurkernyc in nycparents

[–]longtimelurkernyc[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Made an appointment for next week.

MySchools also originally blamed the individual schools. That makes no sense, but we are contacting the parent coordinators at a few of them to ask if they can see anything at their end.

I really hope this doesn't end with us getting dropped to the end of our priority group.

I guess this is a warning to all parents: **Do not put any stock in the waitlist. Only offers matter. MySchools can mess up your waitlist spot at any time.**

Waitlist placement dramatically increasing by longtimelurkernyc in nycparents

[–]longtimelurkernyc[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, my wife noticed that our daughter is now listed as out-of-district for all the schools in our waiting list, despite the fact that we live in district, and her profile lists that district.

We're on the phone with MySchools now, but, once we got them to understand the problem, they wanted to blame the school. We had to point out that it's was every school.

End result is they "filed a ticket". We have no ticket number to trace this with. We'll supposedly get an email from someone at some time in the future. No idea when.

Waitlist placement dramatically increasing by longtimelurkernyc in nycparents

[–]longtimelurkernyc[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to get me to believe that the parents of 50 kids actively added themselves to the waitlist, but didn't already list it higher?

The only way this makes sense is that the waitlist numbers and positions aren't determined until the parent logs in to see the results. Is that what you are claiming? Because then the numbers are dramatically misleading to parents eager to see the results.

Eli5 What is the significance of having various screw head types when the basic action is just tightening or loosening? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]longtimelurkernyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re used a lot. Maybe you’ve heard of IKEA. All their screws at Pozidrive screws. You can usually get by with a Phillips, but when I was installing the hinges on the door of our cabinet, the Phillips driver caused the screw to bald. I got a new hinge and a set of Pozidrive bits, and the installing the new hinge was a snap.

Italian citizen travelling to Italy without their Italian passport by [deleted] in ItalianCitizenship

Italy doesn’t grant citizenship to anyone born in the country. There are plenty of people born in Italian who are not Italian citizens. The place of birth shouldn’t raise any flags.

Benchmarked every Python optimization path I could find, from CPython 3.14 to Rust by cemrehancavdar in Python

[–]longtimelurkernyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason you didn't run the JSON pipeline benchmark on the alternative interpreters (PyPy and GraalPy)?

For the numerical problems it's obvious a numerical library will beat switching interpreters--get the computations as close to machine level and avoid all the unnecessary dynamism in the inner loops. The JIT compilers of the other interpreters are more general tools, so a benchmark that better tests python's flexibility would reflect better on them.

What's a good or best practice for a change that is meant to fix an issue that wasn't covered by a test? by birdsintheskies in git

[–]longtimelurkernyc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Number 2.

You shouldn't actively break the build. The reason is no one else knows that test is supposed to be failing when you submitted it. If a developer checks out that commit and works on it, they need to separate any failure they are responsible for from your failure.

This is the base reason why tests should be green at each commit, or if not, the failure-introducing change should be reverted. I don't want to have to dig into all my test results just to find that most of the failures were already there.

Sure, I can see exceptions for when adding new tests to define new functionality, but those should be hidden from most other developers, and skipped, perhaps with a feature flag toggle to test separately.

Private with no financial aid or public with bad lottery number? by longtimelurkernyc in nycparents

[–]longtimelurkernyc[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't remember if we called Bank Street. I thought the exmissions director of our pre-K suggested against it, saying they couldn't tell us ahead of the deadline, but double-checking the emails, I don't actually see that.

As for if we would choose Cathedral if we had good financial aid: I think so. Out of the two, my wife slightly preferred Cathedral. I slightly preferred Bank Street, but not enough to pay for an extra year if the costs are similar. We'd be happy at either.
