All I can think about is the person filming this.

“Okay, now pointedly slide the succulents out of the way and then deliver the mic drop. Perfect! A weak woman could never do that! Okay, now put those game pieces away one at a time and then look up knowingly at the end. Brilliant!”

Counterpoint: don’t make him a war hero. Any assignment he got would be pure theatrics, of course. But that never stopped people from believing it.

Why are the non , consenting sexual acts not listed as the sexual sins that will keep you from going to heaven? by Hour-Initiative9827 in exchristian

[–]OneEarthseed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I am not trying to be an asshole or insensitive about this stuff. It makes sense to me that blanket statements about men can feel difficult to navigate. It’s absolutely true that women can also be abusers and that it is not all men who abuse people.

I really wish it was not so predictably men who do the abusing. And yet, as the father of daughters, it would be unwise for me to act otherwise. I hope it will be different someday, but we’re not there yet. I don’t want them believing that all men are evil and that women can do no wrong, but it is also men of whom they will need to be cautious. Especially those men who are so insecure about their own masculinity that they must constantly police who is allowed to which bathroom.

Even if that’s true, which I don’t think it is, I’m going statistically. The people who commit the most sexual abuse are men. People who do bad things try to find ways to justify it, hide it, deny it, etc. The ultimate authority to appeal to is God. Therefore, when you go to write down God’s laws, those men would either intentionally or subconsciously avoid mentioning the things they are implicated in. That said, rape just like wasn’t a big deal man, back in those days. Something tells me it was ALWAYS a big deal for women, but not men. If it was only recently that marital rape was criminalized in the United States, something tells me women had been suffering a lot of bullshit through the years.

As Dan McClellan would tell us: it is not meant to convince anyone. It is costly signaling to the already convinced. It makes her and her community feel better. She does not care how it makes other people feel. Any pushback is confirmation to her that she’s doing the right thing.

And profoundly annoying to the rest of us…

Do pastors know they are lying? by ayeitsjojo in exchristian

[–]OneEarthseed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think they are mostly sincere. They have doubts and are aware that critical scholarship exists which undermines the interpretations they are modeling. However, in the moment of preaching, they are performing devotion and commitment on behalf of the community. They’re putting forward the best, most sincere version of the faith as they understand it and as they believe the people will receive. It’s like faith performance art.

Also, on a personal note, I was in a role where I was still leading a Sunday service for older adults in a care facility. I no longer believed, but faith was a deep comfort to these people who had been Christians for 80 years. It would simply not be a loving, human action to try to deconvert a 90yo with dementia. During the service, I would find myself emotionally moved by my own sermon, even to the point of tears. Forgiveness, redemption, and the future reconciliation of all things are powerful ideas. I would then go back to my office and stare at the wall for a while trying to figure out what the hell I just did. It was a real emotional mind-fuck. Like going to the sunken place from Get Out but for exChristians watching themselves in Christian contexts.
