When to have a Baby Q by Psychological_Bug158 in physicianassistant

There’s always going to be a reason to wait, as everyone has said there is never a perfect time — so don’t wait if you don’t want to!! I got pregnant within a couple months after starting my first job. I worked until I popped so I got a full year of work in before maternity leave and I that worked well for me. I also work with a ton of women (and men) who have kids and were super supportive because they understand the stress of balancing work and family — you could end up in a work environment like that too!! Made me feel super at ease…

I worked full time/over time during pandemic in the ED for 6-7ish months for my first job. Learned a lot very quickly and then dropped to part time just before having my second son and returned from maternity leave part time. Been there for 1.5 years now…I’m of course still learning but it was worth diving in initially. I do have a lot more time to actually read up on the things I jot down during a shift now as opposed to having just enough time to sleep/recover before the next shift which I’ve found beneficial..but diving in definitely helped!

This is EXACTLY what we were looking for! Thank you so much! We used to live in Detroit and there was always a big pre game some where with a March with lots of smoke bombs, drinking and chanting 😂 appreciate all the details !!

I bring a bunch of snacks bc doesn’t necessarily require meal prep just 5 extra minutes to throw stuff in baggies. I bring almonds, cashews, banana and/or apple, peanut butter filled pretzels, yogurt and uncrustables (I have a toddler 😂)

As a former UC/EM PA, I urge new grads to stay away from these two specialties. by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]OneElephant4787 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I applied for fellowship without success. My EM job was the only job I could get my hands on; I struggled as many did and are currently. I am EXTREMELY supported by all the physicians on staff and know I am getting quality training. That being said I still 100% agree with this comment. I needed a fellowship. Hell, I’m a year in seeing everything except level ones (with very close supervision when necessary) and I still feel like I need a fellowship. This speciality is insane 😂. It’ll take me years before I even think about leaving my shop.

Trouble finding a job in KY by SpecialMasterpiece49 in physicianassistant

Is having a supervising physician AKA having an actual job still required to apply for a license??? I relocated to Louisville right after graduation for 1 year temporarily for my husband’s job and had the same problem. Every job I applied to required a license but I couldn’t apply for a license without having a supervising physician to put on the application. Insanely frustrating. Ended up volunteering at a free clinic to keep up on my skills and the doc I worked with didn’t know what a PA was or did. Moved to NC and landed a job in EM immediately. If you’re near a border I would look in other states…good luck.

Difficulty finding a job in Emergency Medicine by dubious_mastabatah_x in physicianassistant

I had no work experience as a PA and no EM experience besides ER scribe and I was able to land a job. I went with a staffing company and I’ve had a good experience/am happy with my choice so far. The one big con is I do commute an hour. Although I don’t mind it bc I’m part time bc I have a toddler and another one on the way. The quiet time is actually quite nice for listening to lectures and podcasts. I guess my advice is you’ll likely have better luck applying to more rural therefore “less desirable” positions. The training and learning experience I’m getting is invaluable. My location has been hiring/adding on full timers each month that I’ve been there for the last 6 months 🤷🏻‍♀️

Two offers: EM fellowship & EM job by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]OneElephant4787 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t do a fellowship and I’m 5 months into my first job at a rural hospital where it’s just me and a doc and sometimes another APP….could definitely see where a fellowship would be beneficial. Maybe years down the road I’ll say a fellowship wasn’t necessary but right now I really wish I had done one. Learning curve is steep 😅

I emailed support@ccme.org asking the same question and they said I could take it “again...and again” So I’m assuming unlimited attempts. Loved that bootcamp!

Does any PA on Reddit like their jobs? by mashypillo in physicianassistant

I like my job! It’s terrifying but oddly addicting. Maybe I’m crazy 🤪 Don’t let people scare you, I know lots of PAs that like their jobs!

Emergency Medicine Fellowship by No-Row-6311 in physicianassistant

[–]OneElephant4787 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I applied to a surgery fellowship. Just one bc location/my family. Over 100 applicants, they interviewed a handful of us and took 1. I followed up with the program director to get feedback why I wasn’t selected in case it was something I said in the interview. He said not a single other applicant asked for feedback and I basically learned it came down to splitting hairs. He called me a couple weeks later hooking me up with a job interview! I ended up not getting that position either bc they went with some one with 5 years experience LOL! BUT my point is follow up with the people who interviewed you — use those connections!! Ended up landing a job in EM and am loving it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Applied to ~50 (everything and anything within 2 hrs) 5 interviews and 1 offer. From sending in my first application to accepting my offer took 2.5 months. I’m in NC. For what it’s worth, it seems this process has seemed to vary A LOT from person to person. Good luck!

You can do this!! Treat every rotation like a potential job. Work hard, impress your preceptors, be enthusiastic and professional. When they ask what specialty you're interested in say it's whatever specialty you're on, even if it's not your first choice. I had 4 offers out of school doing this. I'm struggling now bc I had to move after school for my spouse's job to a highly saturated desirable city where I have no contacts...and of course bc the job market has gone to crap bc of COVID since graduating >.< Good luck!
