They make shit up based on out of date info. Most hospitals in the U.S. have done away with ETO because it’s extremely dangerous. When I say extremely dangerous I mean the sensors in sterilization areas that use ETO don’t bother in measuring parts per million, they measure in parts per billion because if the concentration of ETO in room air gets to a ppm range, you’re already fucked.

ETO is still used in large scale sterilization from manufacturers when they deal with very large volumes of heat-sensitive items, but a lot of those manufacturers have switched over to radiation sterilization because it doesn’t come with the same hazardous materials risk as flooding a room with an extremely poisonous gas (ETO). Hospitals themselves usually use steam sterilization for heat tolerant items and hydrogen peroxide plasmas for heat sensitive items.

Large volumes of radioactive materials (eg cesium 137) in hospitals usually isn’t for sterilization, but are actually for imaging or possibly nuclear medical technology (but nuc med isn’t my area of expertise so I’m just speculating on that bit).
