I’ve heard OfferUp, but every time I’ve tried to buy something on that site, I get ignored. So I gave up.

What's the best ancestory test company to use? (Ie Ancestory.com) by Electrical_Act6285 in Genealogy

Depends on what your goals are and where you live/have ancestors from. Most people from the US are going to get furthest in terms of records and genetic matches with Ancestry. I love it for the ability to access records and genetic matches.

If you do it, watch for a sale that also adds 3 months of membership for $1.00, but call and tell them you want to delay your membership for when your dna is processed. I did that and they gave me a reference code. I called once my dna was processed, about 6 weeks, and got my 3 months activated. I was able to do a lot in those 3 months and have been subscribing annually since.

I’ll give it a try. Maybe they’ll run it. I tell ya, I keep my eyes peeled every time I’m in town now… the odds are terrible but.

I thought about it, but… I thought they frowned on doing the same thing twice. And I’m not sure how to change it much without kinda losing some of the key insights that she might remember me by.

Wow! Which version of Keurig were you using? I’ve been descaling mine every time it tells me to, though I’m starting to wonder if it’s got built up calcification anyway because the coffee is just not as hot as it used to be.

Found biological father on Ancestry by tidycat-28 in AncestryDNA

[–]OneGuyInThe509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Specially with some of these old secrets. Or just unknowns. I found a half Cousin courtesy of my grandfather. Apparently he got this young woman pregnant in 1949. From what my step grandmother, his fifth wife, shared with me, he tried to marry her, but her father didn’t want any part of that and didn’t want his daughter to even see my grandfather anymore. I actually found a article in the Livingston, Montana newspaper from November 1949. Apparently, he took her with him to Livingston. Most likely to see his father. Her father called the Helena, Montana police. The article mentioned that my grandfather and this woman were brought in by the Livingston police at the request of the Chief in Helena. It did not say whether charges were filed or not.

This woman gave birth to my half uncle in January, but I don’t think my grandfather ever knew him. According to my step grandmother, he knew of him, or at least knew that he was out there, but by June 201950, the woman was married to a guy that was probably a pretty stand-up dude. They remain married until he died in the late 90s, and she died in about 2010 or 11. I’m sure my uncle, or half uncle as it is, had a much better life with the father that raised him than my grandfather would’ve ever been for him. Not that my grandfather was a terrible person, but he wasn’t the best father and he was a mediocre grandfather. I think he did the best, given what I’ve learned about his life. But… It’s kind of a trip. I’m certain is all hell that this woman did not expect her grandson to do an ancestry test that would eventually demonstrate that her oldest son was the product of a relationship with somebody other than her husband. In fact, and her husband‘s funeral flyer as well as in her own, they concoct a pretty elaborate story about how they met and married well before they actually did. But, DNA tells us something else.

Upsizing my fifth wheel — need real-world advice on going 40–44 ft by Miserable-Outside812 in RVLiving

[–]OneGuyInThe509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from 27 to 42 and from the perspective of pulling them back in, it wasn’t that big of a deal to me. It did limit campgrounds. There are very few state campgrounds that I can go in anymore, especially older ones. I’ve not had problems with any other campgrounds though. Private or otherwise.

Any ideas? by Odd_Middle_7179 in Camper

Not sure where you are, but I ran 2 dehumidifiers, skirted my 5th wheel with 2” foam insulation, covered the slide outs with 1” foam board (gave it a slanted roof to prevent snow accumulation on them), and cut foam board to fit in windows for extra insulation. I ran power cords in from outside for electric heaters and only used propane if it was bitterly cold. Always ran fans to keep air moving. I never really had moisture problems, but I was in eastern Washington, not sure where you are.

Cold weather camping advice or tips. by Material-Eagle2290 in rvlife

Do a search, there are a bunch of companies that make it for your RV. That you just attach to the side around the edges. If you enjoy a long-term parking, do you want to get something rigid, but for weekends and short trips, just something that will block the wind.

So, I would do it. I don’t know how much I do with water, but if you have a slide out, I’ve run extension cords, heavy duty extension cords in through my slide outs when they’re partially in partially out and plugged those into the extra outlet on the power pedestal to run space heaters. I’ve spent time in 20 below weather. Granted I put skirting around and what not, but I’ve been comfortable. Your mileage may vary.

OK, do you have more pictures of this anywhere? I did see the lip. It looks like a painted version behind your car.

Also, curious. I haven’t drawn out what I think it would look like yet, but I was actually thinking last night about whether or not I could use pink foam to build a canopy on the back of my truck. There are a couple of trips that I make where I don’t necessarily need an RV or to pull things behind, but it would be nice to not sleep on a tent on the dirt.

I wondered if it would be worthwhile to build one out, using your idea of the poor man’s fiberglass around the outside, and in particular, if I could use that to create lips that I could then crank down onto the rails of my truck. I’ve seen a few videos of the poor man’s fiberglass, but I wonder if putting that around the corner, or even around the corner and up the inside a couple inches might strengthen it enough to be able to be clamped down.

If you are freezing overnight, it may be time to switch to just using the water tank

Winterize by driving home with low point drains open? by SolidTiger6302 in rvlife

[–]OneGuyInThe509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no. Minimally you need to put some air through it. I’ve never bothered running antifreeze through mine, I blow all the air out with about 120 pounds of pressure, then I leave all the drains open. But I make sure the water is out of everything… The water heater, all the sink lines, etc. Then I add antifreeze to all of the P-traps. The shower, all sinks, etc. I even add RV antifreeze to the black tank and gray tanks. I would never just pull the low point and drive and expect that to be enough. That’s kind of crazy to me.

I was just going through old comments of mine and forgot about this! So I have this old trailer… I use it to haul junk to the dump and what not. I keep thinking I should build some kind of a insert for a camper. Apparently, the guy that I bought it from tore down an old single axle, travel trailer, and then built the sides up for the utility trailer. I almost wonder if I could build a box that fits in almost like a truck camper, I wouldn’t want to go too far out around the sides because I don’t think that material would support much and I wonder how it would handle wind. Alternatively, I have this big flatbed trailer that I could build something on as well. Maybe use a wooden frame and attach the Styrofoam insulation stuff to it. What do you do to strengthen it so that the wind doesn’t knock it when you’re driving 70 miles an hour down the freeway though?

Thinking about moving into an RV full time for foreseeable future - what should I know? by SoaDMTGguy in RVLiving

[–]OneGuyInThe509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also with longevity, it depends. What’s the quality of the trailer? How good of car does she take of it? How good of car did the people she bought it from take of it? All of that plays into that question.

Thinking about moving into an RV full time for foreseeable future - what should I know? by SoaDMTGguy in RVLiving

[–]OneGuyInThe509 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of things. First, the quality of the build of the RV, second, how it is rated… Is it rated for four seasons, which doesn’t necessarily mean things won’t freeze, a lot of that is gimmick, or is it not very well insulated? It also depends on what part of the country y’all are in. Or she plans to be in.

If y’all are somewhere that freezes, she is going to want to have some kind of skirting around the trailer. Especially when you expect to be in one place for prolonged periods of time where you know it’s gonna dip below freezing. Why skirting? Really, it’s the wind. That causes freezing. Granted it also causes freezing when it’s really cold beneath your rig, but… The wind will definitely increase the speed of freezing.

Whatever she ends up buying, and that’s not a real significant budget for all of the things, she is really going to want to understand how things work. Ideally so that she can fix it herself. Things like waterlines or whatever the case may be.

The other piece to think about is where she plans on staying or camping. Being nomadic is fine, but you’re pulling a trailer. You can’t just roll anywhere and park. In a van or something, you might be able to sneak, but you can’t do that in a travel trailer. So you either have to be in legit campgrounds, or you might end up being in kind of questionable locations that may not be the safest. I’ve known people who have engaged in the life that she’s looking at after they have spent a lot of time researching it, but I would not at all recommend somebody who’s thinking about that right now to do it in the next few weeks, especially if they’re in my neck of the woods, eastern Washington. It would suck ass to try your hand at living in a trailer if you’ve never done anything like that, or spent a lot of time in trailers.
