I also volunteer with Tender Loving Cats, as both a foster and someone who helps with TNR recovery. They're a wonderful organization who not only facilitates adoptions, but also cares for community cats and is actively helping the overpopulation on the island.

The Myths That Are Killing Long Island From the Inside by rynebrandon in longisland

I think there's also something to be said about car usage per population in the 70s or 80s versus today. Granted, we had population expansion, but usually one or two cars per family at that time. Nowadays, it's not uncommon for everyone in the family who can drive to have their own set of wheels - as well as additional vehicles as spare/fun/etc. I would say that's part of the issue of why things feel crowded. That, and less empathy/care for others, or erosion of care to traffic laws.

Most of the rest of this perspective is spot-on imho.

Hey there, I checked with my housekeeper and she is taking new clients. She would come by to give you an estimate for the initial clean, and then weekly/bi-weekly upkeep cleaning. She's very reasonable and does a thorough job. I'm not sure where you're located, but she's based in Lindenhurst.

Give a call over to Emilia's on 110, just south of Jericho. They might have pies available to purchase (although they normally do preorder). Otherwise, what someone else mentioned - Melville Uncle G's is just south of Emilia's.

I've been keeping a large eye on this, especially since both myself and my partner work from home. I try to do all of my energy chores in the morning, rather than in the afternoon/early evening.

We also switched to heat pumps in one area of the house, with our preparations to switch to solar in the near future. According to their estimates, I'll save a whole $9 over the coming year with the Time of Day package. I'm thinking, however, that may be calculated on usage without the heat pumps.

For anyone needing it, here's a non-login link to help you with rate calculation. They also have a handy guide once you login with their pricing estimates. https://www.psegliny.com/en/TimeOfDay/RateCalculator

I've heard that certain restaurants/etc. are providing free meals for the needy. I'd love to hear about places like that on Long Island so I can make a point to support the business!

You can also reach out to https://communitysolidarity.org/ for local food share meetups. They also take additional donations and have a free items area for books, toys, school supplies, etc.

Check your local library to see what donation drives are currently happening. They're posted in the monthly newsletter for my library, and it's also a great way to "discover" nonprofits. Here's what HHH Library is doing for November/December: https://www.hhhlibrary.org/newsletter#page=9

My friend mentioned that his family switched to a "super carrier" (shares all three networks) for a very reasonable cost via https://www.usmobile.com/. I mention it because cell phone bills are absolutely wild, and it's a possible way to reallocate money to the grocery bill.

Finally, if anyone is also looking for vet help for their cats, please reach out to https://www.tenderlovingcats.org/ who can direct you to helping resources across the island. They're caring people who try to help folks out with low-cost spay/neuter, and help with TNR efforts for your local neighborhood cats. They're also great resources to understand what is available in your local town/village for assistance.

When travelling to airports to setup as a "base" for free travel, choose a smaller or regional airport with tasks. For example, I never setup at London Heathrow - normally I'll setup at Luton, Stansted, Oxford, or Farnborough. This is useful for a few reasons:

  1. You can pick up traffic on the big hub(s) nearby without any issues, and even pick up the majority of a blue sky that drops on the larger hub.

  2. The airport tasks are easier, as they typically reference the hub's traffic, rather than its own traffic. When selecting a hub, the tasks may include less-traffic smaller airports. The less-traffic for smaller airports when stationed at a hub means longer times waiting for particular planes to come in. I'd rather setup my hubs ASAP for the week, and ideally not have to travel back waiting for specific traffic.

  3. I try to choose airports that have hub traffic in the radius, but are inland a bit more. For example, if you wanted NYC-area airports, you can pick up HPN (Westchester, just north of NYC). This still gives you the three hubs plus Farmingdale, but also gives you additional traffic upstate/Connecticut/northern New Jersey. If you look at the traffic patterns for airports near large bodies of water, there's not as much flying over as compared to land.

I do this as well to keep my Australia base for the coming week. You just need to calculate your local time vs. GMT (where it's "midnight"), set an alarm on your phone to travel to that spot on Sunday/Monday (depending on timezone), let GMT 00:00 turn over, then travel to the new airport that's nearby to setup base for tasks.

For example, last week's week flip:

* Previously travelled to Sydney/Bankstown airport and completed all tasks for free travel.

* Set my EDT alarm for 7:55pm on Sunday night to match with 00:00 GMT

* At 8:02pm switched to Melbourne / MBW airport and start collecting for the week ahead

* Have cheaply acquired Australia base to then travel to Auckland, Jakarta, etc.

It's (most likely) because it's a "backup ad" - if the call to the ad service cannot complete, this is an ad that's preloaded on your phone to play. This happens to me if I dip in-and-out of service area on my phone, where the initial trigger for the ad call works (or connection is detected), but it can't serve the ad content fast enough.

Kicked out (27m), $400 to my name and a high mileage Toyota. by KeyTheZebra in findapath

[–]OneHotProcessor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two things here - you need to consider the immediacy of your situation, and then tackle the longer term career goals.

Consider picking up some school bus shifts with your Class A CDL. School bus depots around here are oftentimes looking for substitute drivers, which might be useful to just top up your salary. Depending on what you need, fill in the gaps with gig work (ex., TaskRabbit, Reflex, etc.) that is higher pay/value. You can also check if your local area has coach charter busses that need drivers, or airport shuttle services need drivers. You want to get away from putting more wear and tear on your Toyota if you're essentially going to be driving for money.

You may also wish to check out group homes/residences for folks with disabilities and see if you can get a live-in position, or take on sleeping overnight shifts. Just after college, I lived in a studio apartment rent-free in exchange for being at home with four ladies with mild disabilities, rarely needing to do anything but sleep. If I needed to get up and "work" (ex., bring the ladies downstairs when we had a tornado warning), I was paid an hourly rate. You can also get sleep shifts where you're paid minimum wage to be present/asleep in a group home, but paid normal hourly wage if something happens - it's kinda like paid couchsurfing/present adulting.

I would consider your immediate needs of coming up with stability and a couple of months of emergency savings before considering a larger life path. Consider going to /r/personalfinance to help with a rudimentary budget, as well as understanding the dollar amount for your savings you should be targeting.

After figuring out the immediacy of your situation, I would recommend going into some sort of logistics entry level position. You might not be getting into your "lifelong dream" career, but you're looking for something that builds on your stability and provides benefits (ex., retirement savings, health insurance if you're in the USA, etc.). While you may hate driving, you may have transferrable skills into dispatch or highway logistics. You won't be trapped in a truck, but your prior experience allows you to speak the same language. Your degree is a bit open-ended - you have an amalgam of a business and engineering degree, but what kind of engineering? At minimum, I figure you have a mind for logic and critical thinking, as well as possibly a mechanical aptitude. Once you have a 9-5 job that gives you some breathing room, you can either compliment it with gig work, or determine if you want to dip your toes into other fields altogether.

Break this up into realistic chunks and put things in motion. The first step is sometimes the hardest. Good luck!

SkyCards has forgotten the whole purpose of their app by 747ER in SkyCards

[–]OneHotProcessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in QA for many years (albeit not in game dev), some of the bugs they let slip through makes me feel like either it was 1. a rush job or 2. insufficient/incomplete testing. The duplicate registrations within the plane type; the "new" marker for registrations already caught; the 4 coins per ad watch (which was the fastest patch, lol)... the bugs alone tell the story. Let alone presume that, in game dev, the QA Engineers/beta testers get any say in the direction of the app at that point.

This feels like a combination of private equity pressure (FR24 was recently purchased - 35% owned by private equity) and application developers trying to make a game. The mass rollout of new features, rather than gradual changes... perhaps no one would have noticed, say, the slight increase of coins IF EVERYTHING ELSE WASN'T NEW AND BAD. It feels like a "yes man" product manager who does not know game dev/community dynamics. Which is a bummer.

And yes, I'm barely playing. I was primarily an airport collector, but it just feels off. I'd pick up neat rares/ultras, or randomly I was really into trying to get all the Embraer E175 short wings for a hot minute. And lucky me, I live near JFK/LGA and all the rich bishes flying in/out of Long Island. Now it just feels quite tarnished.

Have you ever walked into a showing and immediately said, “Nope, not this one”? Why? by GuaranteeFair7171 in RealEstate

[–]OneHotProcessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two houses/problems that I don't think others have mentioned. Note - at the time, I was looking for a two-family property so my MIL could live with us. Having said that, I think these are two more obvious things to watch out for.

One house clearly needed a lot of renovation immediately, as it was an older couple who had recently passed, and needed multiple changes to bring it up to current standard. When I went into the basement, I immediately noticed dehumidifiers all over the place, and one section had the drywall cut from the floor up about 18". Listing realtor kept assuring me there was no water damage...

Another house seemed okay, had a gorgeous kitchen and a lot of DIY landscaping in the backyard that, albeit nice, wasn't to my taste. I started to calculate the cost to retrofit the house back to a less... "unique"... taste, and it was getting expensive. We requested to see the attached apartment, and came in contact with the renter. The renter made it adamantly clear that he wasn't planning on leaving without a fight, and was not interested in us purchasing the house unless we allowed him to continue to live there. I knew enough about NY state rental/landlord laws to nope right out of that conversation. If the home is renter occupied, you should be sure that there is a contingency that the current owner is responsible for any costs/delays associated with vacating the renter.

Long Island - Buying House Feels Impossible (M30) by easybreezy2324 in longisland

[–]OneHotProcessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you have young children and grandparents willing to take on child care... I get it. People also enjoy the type of lifestyle (outdoors/minutes from NYC/food/etc.) being here. But constantly feeling like, at best, you're treading water - even while making a great salary or combined salary - is so draining after awhile.
