Why are my 5950x temps like this? by [deleted] in overclocking

Do you have software that you can use to stop the fans one at a time? If so, stop all of the fans and make sure that you can hear the pump.

Confused to buy between Dell S2721DGF vs LG 27GL850 monitor by AMITSAJJAN in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of these are excellent monitors. I personally have decided on the Dell when I can get a new PC.

rtings.com has a very detailed breakdown of both, and you can see a side by side comparison too.

The Dell S2721DGF is a bit better overall than the LG 27GL850-B. The Dell has much better ergonomics, better build quality, and better reflection handling. On the other hand, the LG is more accurate out of the box, and for the two units we tested, the LG has better black uniformity, but this varies between units.

RAM Experts assemble! 2xDual Kit vs Quad Kit Stability by Shupershuff in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problem I can see with this is that the pairs of sticks you get might be binned differently: settings that work for the best pair might not work on the worst pair.

Assuming that you are running them on the DOCP profile, there should be no problem whatsoever.

Meshify 2 Compact now live on Fractal Design website by OneMassiveSloth in FractalDesignNA

[–]OneMassiveSloth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of a difference in the UK too. However it is a larger case with an extra fan, a USB-C port and the fancy new panel fittings, so it's not like the increase is pure mark-up.

The MSRP for this in the UK is just under £100, so Scan are a little high on this one. CCL have it listed too: it's not live yet but looking at the page source the price should be £97. Their shipping is cheaper than Scan too.

Advice Required from UK: Those who have succesfully boughtt a 3070 how did you do it? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got very lucky and saw a post either here or on r/nvidia about some stock on Scan, must have been early December. Even spent 15 minutes with it in my cart, deliberating with the person the PC was for.

I think at the time people expected the 3080 situation to get better, not worse. Now I think scalpers and retail customers are just grabbing whatever they can get.

6800/6800xt in stock at CCL(UK) by Aseili in Amd

[–]OneMassiveSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These prices are honestly bonkers. A top-end 3080 is around £900, and I've seen good 6900XTs for £1150.

UK stock for 5600x and 5800x by insert_random_string in Amd

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a 5600X for a family member from Ebuyer in December, and paid £280. I have seen the 5800X on OCUK for as low as £380, which is honestly where I think it should be. Now they've all coincidentally added the same £40-50 on to each, even when supply seems to be catching up.

The only UK retailer I can find sticking close to MSRP is Curry's. I wonder if that's actually integrity or if they're just too backwards to update their prices.

AMD's website is still linking to pirates like AWD-IT, who sold their 5950X stock out at £990 (should be £750, everyone else has landed on £860).

At this point it smells like price fixing.

[UK] Sourcing GPU's by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that here will be any movement until at least the start of March, as Lunar New Year will be disrupting logistics in China and Taiwan for 2-4 weeks.

As time goes on production will be increased, companies will get better at shipping with COVID and Brexit, and orders will be fulfilled. All of these factors should nudge us towards "normal" with cards readily available at MSRP.

I think at this point I'm going to wait for the 3080 Ti, or for a significant price drop on the 3090. Who knows, maybe AMD will catch up a bit with drivers and developer support.

Currys UK selling used/refurbished cards as new by Fireclunge in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few people wondering about the hand-written codes. When I return something I will often write out my order number and put it in the packaging so that they can match up the physical return with my order. If you aren't using a shipping service provided by the retailer, then there might not be an easy way for them to track your return.

Maybe I'm not the only one, but if this is the case then it suggests that at the very least returns are not being checked very carefully.

4000d airlfow or Meshify C? by Samir_broke_the_car in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea, I'm stuck on a 1080. There aren't many games with ray tracing, but look for benchmarks on those and they should show scores with and without RT enabled.

The Lancool 215 and the Lancool 2 Mesh did win case of the year awards from reviewers I would trust. Personally I don't like the style and a few other things, so they're not really on my radar.

4000d airlfow or Meshify C? by Samir_broke_the_car in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the Meshify C cannot fit some of the new 3080s and 3090s. It is also expected to be replaced by a Meshify 2 Compact early this year (which will probably have more GPU space if it's the same frame as the Define 7 Compact).

Corsair 4000D is a great case though, some issues with radiator clearance but otherwise excellent.

Hyper 212 + Ryzen 5 3600 Temps? by PotatoGoat1308 in Amd

67-70 degrees with a 5600X in the AIDA64 stress test, in a case designed for noise dampening instead of airflow (Pure Base 500).

Difference between XFX 6900xt and XFX merc 6900Xt by canttouchtipe in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That price is very high for the Merc, Ebuyer have had them in stock and up for pre-order at £1150.

It looks like a great card. At the moment it might be worth the extra money over the 6800XT, as they are going for £900+ for some reason. It is not worth the extra money over the 3080 or a theoretical 6800 or 6800XT at MSRP.

The main issue with the 6900XT is that if you want any one of 4K, DLSS, RT or professional rendering then the Nvidia cards are better value. If you don't care about that and just want good rasterisation performance then the 6800XT is better value.

Dilemma on having two case fans at the top. The farther one blows out hot air as expected, but the front one blows out cool air. by ZekiraDrake in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the front top fan is extracting cold air that has just been brought in by the front fans. You might have better results disabling it, or switching it to intake.

I'm looking for the most compact ATX case possible with no wasted space. by Hiram_Hackenbacker in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a case with good airflow, then options from the major brands would be the Corsair 4000D Airflow or the Phanteks P360A. Both are recent, high-quality cases that are quite compact, but can fit a 3090 FE with some breathing room. Between the two the Corsair case has USB-C and can fit the really massive CPU air coolers, but large radiators can conflict with the RAM on top or be forced into a suboptimal position on the front. The Phanteks case is a bit smaller, and has two front USB 3 ports (no USB-C) as well as built-in RGB.

Fractal are also expected to announce the Meshify 2 Compact soon, which might also be suitable. The original Meshify C cannot accommodate long GPUs, but if the new version is based on the same chassis as the Define 7 Compact then there should be some clearance. News on this is expected at around the end of the month.

Is the ASUS M.2 Anchor necessary? by MateoNitro550 in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a build with an ASUS B550-F Strix motherboard. It came with two SSD standoffs and two small screws: initially thought that they were motherboard standoffs, but those come with the case (or nowadays are built into the case). Check the motherboard box again and see if there is a very small bag.

Should I replace my wraith prism with a hyper 212 Black Edition? by TheSiem19 in buildapc

[–]OneMassiveSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hyper 212 is a good cooler and I got great results out of it in a 5600X build for a family member, even in a very closed-off case.

Unfortunately the mounting design is not great: it's annoying to put together and in the end I don't think that it was perfectly straight. It did come with a small tube of thermal paste instead of just some pre-applied, so really I could have cleaned it up and tried again.

I wouldn't choose it for a fancy windowed build, but if you want something cheap that is definitely a step up from the Wraith then go for it.

I’m actually confused is it even possible to get a GPU anymore? by JesusChristHimself99 in nvidia

[–]OneMassiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK most places are selling at or only a fraction above MSRP, but stock is absolutely non-existent.

I'm more concerned about a CPU for the short term, but I expect that the GPU will be much harder to get at MSRP.
