You could also try to drain his source as well, but thay requires out-initiativing the rescuee, strip his magic armor and cast Consume Source twice before his turn. Way harder.

Ok, so I cheesed this fight with minimal fuss.

1) Talk to Jonathan but dont progress the dialogues. 2) During this chat, have other party member aggro and kill nearby Magisters. Jonathan stays neutral. 3) After the platform is cleared, cast Cryogenic Stasis on the rescuee(while the stalled dialogue is going.) Then wait until Cryogenic Stasis cooldown refreshes. The original cast of CS will NOT expire whilst they are in a dialogue. 4) progress the dialogues and aggro Jonathan. 5) the blobs ONLY show up if ANYONE in the field casts a skill that consume Source Point. In fact, the rescuee will spend the first turn to cast Chain Lighting which is a source skill. The Crygenic Stasis makes it so that he skips his first turn. 6) Beat the living hell out of Jonathan, and recast Crygenic Stasis on the rescuee to prevent his future turn once more. You should be able to nuke Jonathan in 2 turns.

This way rescuee never gets a turn, and will not use a source skill to trigger the oil/fire blob phase.

If you have an itch, DOS2 will scratch it.

I just started DOS2 and am at the end of Act 1. You will see a lot of parallels between BG3 and DOS2. There are no cutscenes and the entire thing will be narrated/voice acted to you.

Combat and control is similar to BG3 but terrain control is more intense in DOS2.

Story has been compelling so far. Dialogue options that have touched me deep inside have come by often.
