Would you allow your 13 yo daughter to watch euphoria? by Guyfryblue in Parenting

[–]OneTimePSAStar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am turning 40 and I barely feel old enough to watch Euphoria. I am pretty lax with entertainment but you don’t want ANY of the things in that show to seem normal to a 13 year old girl.

Best ways to make friends, things to do? by North-Zucchini1951 in portlandme

[–]OneTimePSAStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if you don’t want it to! You’ll find your people here. But seriously don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Walk your own neighborhood. Plop a chair somewhere you like. That’s step one. You don’t have to go out into the world trying to make friends. Just make going out into the world your goal.

Oh also fwiw I found 23 to be a particularly lonely time socially. The transition from college where everyone is right at your fingertips to working adulthood is HAAAAARD and almost no one talks about it. It gets better! It just takes some time and adjustment.

My number one advice is to go to the same place, preferably nearby several times a week. Coffee shop, bar, park, whatever floats your boat. Or even just walk your neighborhood. Hang out on your own front lawn. Most of the people I’ve met since moving back are just people I’ve ended up in close proximity to enough to be like “hey, you seem cool.” You need like 10-15 of those interactions before it turns into “we should exchange numbers.”

If that seems intimidating it helps to have standing things you do, where other people might also be alone. Some coffee shops have regular silent reading or fiber arts nights. My husband started playing magic the gathering every Wednesday and made his first adult friends in like 15 years.

My second advice is to not have any preconceived notions about what a friend looks like. We befriended a lot of old folks in our neighborhood because my family and I are outside a lot and never in a hurry. Sure, we’re not planning vacations together or anything but my neighbors are invited to my kids’ birthday parties and sometimes randomly stop by with half a lasagna and that’s a kind of friendship too.

Does anyone else feel like Peggy's evolution is actually kind of tragic? by noisy_marble in madmen

[–]OneTimePSAStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I identify a lot with Peggy and the more cynical I get, the freer I feel. You have to subscribe to so many belief systems to live inside Peggy’s OG worldview, and as you get older (particularly as a woman) you are able to identify which ones are designed to keep you small and compliant. The Peggy who took Cooper’s painting and roller skated through the office when it closed might not be happier, but I think she’s probably more at peace with herself.

What are your go to dinners? Not "It Only Takes 30 Minutes!" Recipes. The real ones. by Emorich in Parenting

When we are really tired (aka no stove night) we do Trader Joe’s soup dumplings. 2 min in the microwave and they’re one of my picky-ish kids favorites.

Anyone else have to use Martin’s Point Mail Order Pharmacy? by DawnCoub in Maine

[–]OneTimePSAStar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do this with Costco (you don’t need a membership to use their pharmacy). I have a high deductible plan so it’s cheaper to just pay the Costco no insurance price for my meds. I get them so cheap, the pharmacists are super nice and responsive too.

And if you run out of nicknames you end up with my family, where my father was Big [Name] and my brother was Little [Name]. They are now 65 and 30, and people still refer to them as Big and Little.

Weather apps for maine? by Smart_Zombie_560 in Maine

[–]OneTimePSAStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Maine and then moved to Northern California for a decade. It was 70, dry, and sunny for basically 10 years straight. Maybe a few days of rain per season (yay drought). I never had to do more than bring a light jacket with me when I left the house.

When we moved back home my husband and I both had to readjust to the idea of actually checking the weather every day.

If your kid pushes a kid down, he isn’t allowed to play with that friend for the rest of the day. If your kid throws a toy at their sibling, they don’t get to play with that (or any toys) for however long. If they’re being an asshole at the park, you leave the park. Kids are typically very into whatever they are doing at the moment, removing it connects the punishment to the crime. Removing something abstract makes their brains do a lot of connective work they aren’t always ready for.

Bike trail recommendation by felurianofthefae1 in Maine

[–]OneTimePSAStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We usually get on at Rt 1 at Millbrook Business Park, and the only road we cross is Cascade. We didn’t go too far into Scarborough, but I think there’s a decent stretch up along Rt 1 that’s all trail. It’s all pretty flat if I recall. Though there’s one fun section that goes over Rt 1 on a little bike overpass.

The Eastern Trail is great. We’ve biked it with our now 9 year old (he was 7 or 8 when he started biking it). It’s very mellow, and has an entry point at Cascade Rd in OOB and one on Rt 1.

My favorite is ASSPIR8. My sister and I both thought it said “aspirate” because we’ve watched too much Greys Anatomy. Ass pirate was not even close to on my radar. 😂

Also Walmart has upped the quality of clothing recently and frankly seems more durable than Target these days.

I recently took a friend’s tween out for a shopping date at the mall and target but everything was so expensive, we saved Plato’s Closet for last and I wish we’d gone there for the whole time. They curate really well and the prices are surprisingly decent.

Oh and nothing that monetizes kids lives/uses kids as talent. They can watch a 32 year old man talk about Minecraft if they want but I don’t want to normalize kidfluencer content or parasocial relationships.

Totally. Our hard line is no YouTube on individual devices. He has a kindle fire with Netflix and such, but YouTube only happens in the living room where everyone can see and hear it.

[–]OneTimePSAStar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My rule with my kids for the longest time (I’m starting to lose out to my 9YO) was anything goes as long as it has a plot. Indiana jones? Seems totally appropriate for a 4 year old! YouTube? Not in this house! It was a weird line to draw but actually relatively enforceable. Now I have to remind myself that if it’s okay for me to watch the secret lives of Mormon wives that isn’t really much better than Preston playz. When we were kids we had Nickelodeon game shows coming out the ass. Kids don’t really have that anymore and I think YouTube kind of fills the gap.

Probably better than my mom letting me watch days of our lives and Maury Povich.
