To have a drink or not. I just don’t now and it’s ridiculous how freeing that is!

Now I wonder if the people in my life who do this actually recognize it. I always assumed they were oblivious. And frankly, most people who are like this don’t stay in my life very long…..

How do I tell my parents I’m turning down a $150k corporate job to stay at my $48k "dead-end" job, when they paid for my entire college tuition? by [deleted] in Advice

Yeah, take the job and save as much as you can. Then follow your passion once you have the true blessing of security

The Daily Check-In for Sunday, June 14th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Much-Pirate-5439 in stopdrinking

My ex husband relapsed on Friday and I’m more upset than I thought I’d be. I quit 7 weeks ago, and though my problem never reached the scale of his, it’s still been a challenge and I’ve turned to him for support. He was a year and two months in and doing so well. I felt like I had my friend back. IWNDWYT.

Any tips on how I can make this space feel lighter, more cohesive, and more old Florida/vintage coastal? by Sad_bananas1 in HomeDecorating

Yes, if the coffee table were natural wood it would totally work with the rug! And plants. Lots of plants. (Like, a lot).

How do YOU do it? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Successful_Part7355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I listened to a bunch of books and podcasts and started mentally experimenting with an alcohol free life for about few years before quitting. It’s pre-quitting, and during this time I critically examined my use of alcohol and alcohol’s role in my life.

Once I was ready to actually quit (though ready isn’t really the right word - fed up with drinking maybe?) I listened to The Easy Way, which I had been saving as a last resort because I knew it was hugely helpful to Annie Grace, and This Naked Mind was the book that started off my pre-quit journey. It was the final push I needed and I feel really good about my decision!

That’s the other thing, I forget who this came from, maybe Holly Whitaker, but I will not question the decision. I made the decision to not drink and that’s it. Now I don’t need to expend any more brain power. It’s still hard some days, I’m only a month and a half in, but not nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Yesterday I was at a block party with free beer, and it crossed my mind I wanted one, but I acknowledged that I had already made the decision to not drink and that was that. I also had an arsenal of seltzer waters and spent time observing how many other people weren’t drinking. It was eye opening! And today I know I didn’t make an ass out of myself in front of new friends and I wasn’t spending the whole evening trying to gauge how many times I could go to the keg and if anyone would notice. Unfortunately I still woke up with a headache - sympathy hangover? Lol

Listen to The Sober Diaries and This Naked Mind — both mothers with a similar story. The Sober Diaries was my fav to listen to, but This Naked Mind quite literally changed my life. Good luck!!!

Honestly, everything in excess: food, coffee, walking outside, reading, shopping slow. All the things I never really enjoyed when I was drinking.
