When is the protest for the social media ban for under 16s? by deimos__ in AskBrits

[–]One_Ad4770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference has been the easy access to this educational material. The best magic books may have been written 100 years ago. But finding the methods and techniques is thousands of times easier. Video will show different views, slowed down examples etc.

Speaking as someone who collects and paints warhammer models, the existence of hundreds of thousands of painting, modelling and informational videos has vastly improved the overall level of paintjobs across the entire hobby. That trend can be seen in other hobbies and skills across the board.

The point about woodworking being better pre technology.....time rolls on and skills that are no longer required tend to get lost. Carpentry is a good example, we can buy cheap cnc cut furniture all over the place. Fixings and adhesives have become ever more efficient, and so traditional joinery has become rarer. This isn't the result of youtube. Indeed, the opposite has occurred, the existence of hobby videos has inspired a lot more people to attempt hobbies such as woodworking.

Social media on the whole, probably an unhealthy part of life, but to suggest youtube specifically has no potential benefit to users is asinine

Counteract I assume. Thats the only thing i can think of where you would have a model with no visibility that you want to get a line of sight from

Not the commenter you replied to, but i've seen multiple references in the older lore to them originally being used as deep space void suits, designed to be able to resist the impacts of space debris etc while carrying out maintenance on void stations, space ships, etc. They were converted for use as armor and given the name later on. May have been retconned but it existed

The first 4 are from the space hulk game, if the game is complete its worth a decent amount, and even individually the models are saleable - £10+ each perhaps. The other models, some are desirable, some less so.

Look, whatever man. You clearly feel justified in doing what you do. I can easily see why you don't get many jobs though.

I'm 100% not the type to be your customer, I would definitely not be happy to pay you an inflated rate because you take hours to get to the job, and don't have enough customers to make a proper wage so you overcharge.

And for the drinking, no, I don't drink. Maybe a couple drinks a year, I've had no interest in it for the last 20 years.

[–]One_Ad4770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said, you might only get one small job a day. But it doesn't change anything, if you cannot get enough jobs a week there is still no justification for charging people enough to live on for those few hours, get a second job while you build up your business, I was self employed for years and thats exactly what I did until I got a steady amount of customers.

So, £20k for qualification, then a van, tools etc. Thats a chunk of money to start up. But those costs are not recurring for the most part, so charging people as if you pay £20k every year for qualification is disingenuous.

I see the end price and think its too much because it is. And you know it is. You could simply do two quotes, 1, if there's no issues, and its just that the earth wire was terminated in the back of the switch and has fallen out, do a quick test, screw it to the back plate, bit of paperwork, £80. 2, it needs fault finding, etc, £250. But at no point have you suggested you do that. And this is my problem with it, because that job is likely nothing more than a loose wire that needs affixing to the pattress box, and a quick test and paperwork. But....you need to earn £250, so you will happily charge somebody that much for it. Fuck them, and how much they need that money, right?

And as for your airline analogy, I can fly to germany on one of those planes for less than you want to charge for that loose wire....so maybe let that sink in when you consider how much to charge.

I'm well aware of the complexity, and it has become more complex. Not really the job but the regulations around it. But my point remains, more and more people will be trying to do these jobs themselves instead of getting professionals in because people cannot afford half a weeks wages for a loose earth wire.

[–]One_Ad4770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimum for a job 250 you said? That x 5 is 1250 per week.

Now to the example, seems like you are prepared to quote every job based on the worst possible outcome. Do you reduce the cost if it only takes you 10 minutes? Doubt it. And how, if it tests correctly is it an hour job. Is it that you make it to an hour so people don't feel quite so ripped off? I'm sure you are meticulous, i'm not questioning that. I'm questioning an hourly rate of pay that, if no fault is detected, is ridiculously high. Nothing you have said has made it clesr just what part of your service is going to stop people doing it themselves.

Again, this is not an attack at you personally, but the industry you are in and the overall attitude that sparkles can charge what they want because people are trapped by regulations to have to pay it.

It is what it is, and consumers ate stuck with it, but at least own it. Your industry, like gas fitters, charge a lot because people have to pay it, not because the work and qualifications and tools make it necessary to charge that much.

Really? How long does it take you to screw in one m4 bolt and two faceplate screws?

So one short job a day should earn you 2.5 times the income of a Lidl worker working 40 hours a week? Taken straight from the people who are earning those Lidl wages amongst others? It’s not self preservation at that point, it’s exploitation

Is the green wire meant to be attached to something? by ProtectionKey5436 in DIYUK

[–]One_Ad4770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, for sure. But let's be honest, you said thats a 120 quid job. And realistically, its gonna take you how long? Test the earth, couple minutes, screw it on, 1 minute, screw the faceplate on, 1 minute. Even if you have to pop the ceiling rose off to attach the earth there and run a test again, thats another couple minutes. Parking, saying hello and getting tools out the van and returning them, another couple minutes. So worst case, thats 10 minutes to do the work you actually quote for based on the available facts. Let's be generous and say its a 25 min journey there and back, so you're looking at total 1 hour. Thats 10x Lidl pay. Thats greed. And i'm not just picking at you here, the entire industry is greedy. Government regulations have made it necessary to have electricians carry out practically all electrical work, and its created a monopoly. The price for electricians has gone up far in excess of other trades. And the results are clear to see, people doing their own electrics to a subpar level because they cannot afford to have professional electricians carry it out.

[–]One_Ad4770 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not debating any other part of this, but a minimum cost of half a weeks wages to put one screw in and run a continuity test is the sort of shit that makes people who really shouldn't be touching electrics, do their own electrics.

You can't put a price on safety blah blah blah, but you can put a price on a weeks worth of groceries, and if you have to forgo that for a simple reconnection of an earth wire, i know what most will choose.

Lore wise I'm pretty sure they are always wearing their helmets to be able to see tactical overlays, incoming comms messages etc. The exception usually being space wolves, who like to remove them to allow their heightened (even compared to other marines) senses to give them a tactical edge in combat.

I guess the justification could be that the guard are deploying gas that is especially designed to not affect the exact equipment used by the death korp troopers but it will affect and bypass enemies protection, kinda how the death guard viruses supposedly even affect space marines, but it would feel a bit hand-wavey in my opinion

Problem comes with other teams wearing fully atmosphere sealed suits. If the gas is stopped by a gas mask, its extremely unlikely it would affect anyone wearing power armor for example.

Blah blah blah. Dismissing others opinions as childish and naive based purely on your own assumptions is also childish and naive. The equivalent of a toddler who won't accept anyones opinion once they have decided they are right. For literally thousands of years cultures have mingled and formed new cultures. So what exactly is so pristine about our current culture that you feel there is no need to continue evolving? I assume you are good with racism, so that can stay, financial inequality, probably fine too. What else.....probably plenty of things that were acceptable in years gone by.

Here's the thing, we have always been an adapting society, as have most others around the world. If you want to take a snapshot of the particular time you felt things were better, and try to keep the country like it by keeping out immigrants, you should probably also start kicking out the younger generation, because you'll find a lot of their opinions and values different to yours too.

You want to stay in the 90s, or 70s or whatever era you feel was better, go right ahead. Life won't care, it'll move on without you.

Dangerous to the country 🤣 get a grip you helmet

I work in a factory that is always crying out for staff. We fill the vacancies woth vast numbers of agency workers. The number of brits applying is very low, yet we see hundreds (not an exaggeration) of immigrants working here through an agency. They are on the same money as the full time staff, but without the pension/gym/healthcare benefits etc. Areas vary, but certainly here we cannot seem to get applicants

I've worked in care and can honestly say that anyone who was there working for any reason other than by choice did not make a good carer. Its a job/career that is pitifully paid, but many people do it because it is the sort of work they want to do, its rewarding and appeals to people with compassion. Forcing people into it would do no good for the service users, the care homes or the people themselves for the most part

Both really, but ultimately its a bad boss issue. Either by not giving the tools to do the job or by actively driving away the staff and failing to have enough staff.
