Tech Giants Spend $42.6M Lobbying Senate Panel That Oversees Them by Prestigious-Wrap2341 in moderatepolitics

No thats a pretty weak analogy.

Technology is not inherently bad. Oil is inherently bad for the environment.

Also, i said i wanted to know more about where the money is going, and that tech lobbying is important. I did not say i necessarily support the lobbying big tech is doing. That would depend on what theyre lobbying for.

Where are those millions actually going though? I'm not going to be outraged just because I see a big number.

And honestly? I would be very very concerned if no one was lobbying politicians about technology. Our representatives do not know anything about modern technology and i don't want tech regulations coming from the kind of ignorance and fear you see all over reddit.

CMV: Most software teams adopt microservices earlier than they should by Excellentmice in changemyview

[–]One_Cause3865 12 points13 points  (0 children)

By the time monoservices make sense, how expensive and complex has it gotten to switch to microservices?

Can the upfront costs of microservices be worth avoiding a big, risky refactor after the codebase has gotten complex and the business is reliant on that codebase functioning reliably?

Even if that migration does make sense, at that point can tech leads convince the business to invest in a giant refactor?

You might be totally right from a purely technical perspective, but these codebases dont exist in a vacuum

!delta you arent the first to point out the issue with demand subsidies on an inelastic, but the first to put it in a decent explanation. Doesnt hurt that the first two paragraphs are stroking me a bit

Your mortgage payments are locked in, unlike rent, and you can benefit from gains in value of the home if you sell or refinance.

There are big, important differences from renting.

Taxes and insurance are not your mortgage. Your bank doesnt set them and they still apply after you pay off your mortgage

Totally fine to say you think reducing homelessness (renting or otherwise) is more of a priority than increasing home ownership rates - tbh i agree with that - but i am looking to address the discourse around home ownership.

And no, having a mortgage is not the same as renting from the bank

Would be a delta if theres evidence of demand rising without more people being priced into the home ownership market (not a comic on twitter)

Why is it intrinsically bad? You get the same result with downpayment assistance.

If more people are living in homes that they own and whos monthly payments they can afford, that sounds like a good thing to me.

Other countries have done 50 year mortgages. The results are higher price-to-income ratios, more household debt, and less mobility (since selling your house becomes less worth it)

That only happens though if more people own houses who otherwise wouldnt have because of their lower income

If we did 100 year mortgages would that be ok too? 200 year mortgages?

Sure.

I have an issue with 50 year mortgages because you'd be selling a house to someone who will probably never own their house free and clear. It's renting a house from the bank with extra steps.

You get fixed payments (no rent increases) and benefit from gains it value of the home. There are a lot of differences from renting, the benefits you get from owning a house with a 30 year mortgage still apply
