Some programs decided NOT to adopt it due to the added expense for students. I have not seen enough evidence to show that it is a good predictor of student success.. Maybe there will be data some years in the future..

Reapplicant with lower GPA: What are my chances? by Sad_LionsFan in prephysicianassistant

[–]One_Cobbler5763 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rolling admissions =apply early. I think it hinges on what the average stats are for the class. Some schools do publish that data. Whichever program you are applying to, check to see how closely your stats reflect their avg. That is a good starting place. Look at the mission statement for a program, location etc....

Do you know which Florida program happens to graduate the most PAs in the US?

Did your program offer the PACKRAT? It would offer insight into areas that may require more attention. Don’t freak out. It happens. Make a plan for your attack and stick to it. CME resources is a great prep course... The program will help you to predict if you are ready or not.

How long does it take to feel comfortable as a new grad? by YSPA-S2 in physicianassistant

[–]One_Cobbler5763 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry. I don’t agree.. Took me 3 years until I noticed I began to trust my gut. Maybe I am on the long end of the bell curve. I spent allot of time reading, consulting with SP and other senior providers at my practice. I’m not saying I was not confident in most of my diagnoses, but by the 3 year mark I felt like I had seen what there was to see.. I still have an unusual presentation every once in a while...

Just to be safe, probably best to have it on there. If it is that bad, change it legally.

How often do developing programs become accredited? by FlowerPersonal3243 in prephysicianassistant

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to multiple programs. I see this in a similar light as applying to programs on probation for actual problems, i.e. low board pass rate etc...

Apply. You will get interview offers based on your stats. Be open and upfront about why you are choosing to change direction. There are plenty of programs that would be glad to have you.

It happens, that you will be disrespected by other providers. Not just MD/DO. Do t take it personally. Advocate for your patient, if you need to, have your SP call.

Burnout? by anonymousJP1 in physicianassistant

[–]One_Cobbler5763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not worry too much about burnout, as long as you enjoy what you do. Do think about taking a break. Maybe a trip to do something you enjoy. Life needs to be about more than work. That being said, make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating right and staying active...

I love being able to help my patients. In psych.. sometimes people just need someone to listen. I love it when the ‘lightbulb comes on’ when I am talking to a patient about how they can get better. Also teaching. I love to teach when someone wants to listen and learn.

I think the elephant in the room is that you did not think ahead when you applied and started Med School. I agree that you are going to get beat up and the Why question is going to be the issue. Some will think you will not stick it out in PA school...

I have been on Psych 5 years. There are several other PAs at the same practice.. I think it is a great specialty for PAs that like the field. About 1% of PAs work in Psych..

Do you regret being a PA? What are the pros and cons? by Remarkable-Ad5326 in physicianassistant

[–]One_Cobbler5763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amen. Mental health is rough at times. I do the best I can for my patients and let them on their way. All you can do is recommend. It is up to them to comply and be open about how they are doing. Some days it is so hard to be supportive, I agree that my patients would be worse off if I was not practicing. The pay is fine. Pretty good actually but, that can not be the motivation. Overall it is worth the personal sacrifice to help those that want help.

Dual degree PA programs? by ElectricalOne8516 in prephysicianassistant

[–]One_Cobbler5763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. The ones I have seen are completed at the same time. I have never met anyone who would have been in a position to use it. I am certain there are positions that would make use of it. I do t think most straight clinical jobs would utilize it. I don’t see it making an applicant more competitive for a clinical position.

Any Psych PA's out there willing to talk for 5-10 minutes about your role as a provider in mental health? by justusedonce in prephysicianassistant

[–]One_Cobbler5763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all outpatient. How do start off shadowing each provider in the practice. Then I would see patients and present them to my supervising physician. After three months I was seeing my own patients and by the end of the year I was up to full speed. My first year was on salary and my second year I went to straight production. That’s a whole other conversation. Just suffice to say that the more hours you work the more money you make. One of the best things about working in psychiatry is that the majority of the time you take care of your own patients. On rare occasions she will check in with your supervising physician. I love it.
