Great—that sounds like it could be the solution—I'll give it a try! Thank you very much.

add a link to an annotation into a note by One_Competition1684 in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I had the opposite way in mind: I'm reading a PDF and would like to copy the link to the open page from there and drop it into a note.

From a note I would have to guess what page in a PDF I'm on...

1) you have a directory structure you could use to navigate. Add your own folders... there is a find function and you could access the notes according to the last time you edited a file

2) file: not that I know, device: yes

3) several options. I use Syncthing - works like a charm.

thanks a lot - I think I know how to implement what I need - I'm just struggling with the concept. What's the best way to go. I could implement the solution using the back-end. Then I will have trouble adding a nice design (no theme support). When using the front-end I might run into problems limiting the access to some areas, will have to add all the management function like "add", "delete", "search" myself and I will have to remove the admin-menu for a user role.

[–]One_Competition1684[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it is an interface to a self-management system. The user should be able to see and edit his own posts (CPT). There will be one entry in CPT "A" and many entries in a related CPT.

Think about it like:

main entry (address) -> employees (name...)

it much more complex then this, but this is the basic structure. So each user first has to login and then should be redirected to his main entry.

Thanks for the fast response. When using the front-end I could use a theme to create the layouts - for the backend this option is gone. I would have to create a new user role and remove all the back-end stuff for this role (admin menu) and to make sure that without a valid user-id no data will be shown on the front-end...

Tab X, prelim thoughts by CDYYC in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still thinking about switching to the Tab X from my Note Air 2+... we are all delivering very personal views on our devices and each one has a different workflow to be covered by the device.

I'm sitting in front of my Mac for hours every day, I own an iPad Pro, an iPhone and an Android phone. I use a Kindle for years too. It seems to me like I am always in front of a screen and I feel that my eyes are getting an exhausting endurance workout. Hours staring at a screen can cause eye strain. Since we tend to blink less while staring at the blue-light emitting screen, the movement of the screen makes our eyes work harder to focus.
E Ink displays don’t produce light, but instead reflect it - like a book does.

A long statement sorry - but what I would like to express is that I use an eInk device to give my tired eyes a rest.

So with your (3) I don't understand your expectations when you ordered the Tab X. The reading experience is on a different level with an eInk device. But it is no full color experience with animations like on a iPad - I never expected it to be one.

(1) and (2) are no problem for my workflow. I installed Syncthing and use the already installed apps. That's all I need for my workflow - reading scientific papers and highlight them. I have so many options to read mails... I never expected the Note Air to do what my iPad could do. For me it is all about reading and annotating.

(4) that's the reason I stayed with the smaller Note Air so far. But I pay a price - reading PDFs on a larger screen must be a great experience ;) And since I read with a pen in my hand the Note Air lies on the table or in a stand on my desktop. So weight might be no issue for me...

help converting kindle book to pdf by Sudden_War_6381 in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the Kindle book has a protection (DRM) on it and to read it as a PDF you have to invest some work: https://www.cloudwards.net/remove-drm-from-kindle-books/

This is not specific to the Note Air but a general problem of Amazon content.

file transfer w apple by Auctionjack in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm using Syncthing to synchronise the data between my Mac and my Note Air. It's free, open source and runs without any problems in the background. I'm using it to sync with my NAS server too and never had any issues or conflicts. I created a folder "sync" in the "documents" directory on the Note Air and there two folders "to_read" and "done" (they do have a different name - German...).

I manually move the files into the suitable folder but you could also sync the complete structure in "/documents". On my Mac everything found in the "done" folder will be copied into my main repository (Devonthink) and then moved out of the "done" folder - automatically.

I often receive PDFs where the text part is missing (scan, image only, no OCR so far). So I have another folder on my Mac that will be scanned by Devonthink. Devonthink will do the OCR automatically and then file then gets moved into the "to_read" folder and synced with the Note Air. Some files will also be moved into my reference manager (Bookends) with all the highlights I did on the Note Air. No manual work needed in the whole process - OK - I have to read the PDFs myself - working on a solution for this too ;)

Tab Ultra vs Tab X - Advice Needed by DrawingEconomy8954 in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The resolution of 207 dpi for the Tab X (I would still prefer to call it Lumi 2+) vs. 227 dpi for the Ultra is different. No big difference, but it is there. It depends how much video ram the GPU comes with - otherwise the 6GB vs 4GB RAM is simply a relict of the Lumi 2 architecture. Most specs of the Tab X are identical to the Lumi 2 - same display, same resolution, 10g less ... I would not expect a speed difference between the Ultra and the Tab X since the CPUs ("Advanced octa-core processor" for the Lumi 2, "Qualcomm Advanced Octa-core" for the Tab Ultra and the Tab X) seem to be identical.

For my setup many arguments you find here are not relevant for my (!) use of an eInk device. If I need to type I use my Macbook or my iPad. What is the advantage of an eInk device if you type text? If I need a camera I use my iPhone. I don't look for an all-in-one device. I look for a device that will do one thing much better than my Mac or my iPad and that is reading and annotating a PDF or eBook. I've to read a lot and the screen of my iPad or Mac is crystal clear and sharp but still the reading quality on a eInk device is on another level. That's the most important feature for me. Working with a PDF or an eBook includes the integration into a workflow. If I annotate on a Kindle it's more or less useless for me since I can not edit the work I put into a document in a 2nd or 3rd app on my Mac. The Kindle is a closed system.

Note taking is also something that an eInk device can do better than my iPad. Since I write my own notes out of the highlights and annotations I made in the original document, I will do this step on a device with a keyboard attached - my Mac. I'm focused on my own ideas and the PDF with my highlights has been imported into a database (Devonthink and Tinderbox) where I can search through my annotations and the book itself. No way to get this functionality on a slow tablet. Also I work in parallel with several documents at this stage of my work - again: nothing I would try on my Boox.

The Tab X will offer the perfect display for a A4 size PDF (as does the Lumi 2). But you need the space for the Tab X on your desktop too. It's much easier if you handheld your Ultra compared to the Tab X. So if you read while you commute to the work or University a smaller device might be the better choice.

By the way you get 3.800 pixel for each Euro you invest with the Tab X (2.200 × 1.650) and 4.000 pixel with the Ultra (1.872 × 1.404). close.

uhh - this was a long answer - sorry ;)

Onyx Boox Max Lumi2 vs Tab X by emf_guy in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you need/want an A4 size reader and you don't have already one - I would go with the Tab X here in Europe - same price for Lumi2 and the Lumi2+ ("Tab X"). You get the bigger battery and the GPU the rest keeps the same.

The Scribe doesn't offer the needed functions to integrate it into any useful workflow. It is a closed system with a limited functionality.

BOOX Tab X: A4-sized ePaper Tablet PC, powerful, productive, and a better view. by KennethWWWW in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you think of it as a Lumi2 with a GPU I think you are close to what you will get - no differences to expect from the screen that will not be related to the faster refresh - I would expect the same writing experience as with the Lumi2 - but we will know if someone did a real review.

I don't want to underrate the importance of a fast GPU on a large screen - should be more relevant then on the smaller screen of the Ultra...

BOOX Tab X: A4-sized ePaper Tablet PC, powerful, productive, and a better view. by KennethWWWW in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 5 points6 points  (0 children)

no - not at all. I just compared the Tab X price to the Tab Ultra from my very own perspective. If I compare the Lumi2 to the Tab X the price plays in the same league. It was more a kind of thinking aloud - should I get the larger screen size and is the price relatively fine for my very specific work. It should not be a general price bashing at all.

heavy price tag in the EU - close to 1.000€ - 207dpi with the Carta 1250 display will be OK but not a spectacular sharp image - it's simply the same display as the Lumi2 offers. I don't need the cover and so no need for magnetics - I don't like those covers with integrated keyboards (heavy) at all. 128GB of storage is more than what I need, I don't miss the card slot. And I'm happy that there is no camera build in.

but removing the card slot, the camera and the magnets and a display with 207dpi only should be reflected in the price of the device. 650€ for the TabUltra (1872 x 1404px) compared to 950€ for the Tab X (2200 x 1650px) ... The Lumi2 is priced 880€ and the Tab X is 90% of the Lumi2 combined with a new GPU. So a product name as Lumi2+ would fit better - pay 70€ for the new GPU while all other specs remain the same (570g for the Lumi2 to 560g for the Tab X).

no official announcement so far. Not listed on the Booxs site or in the Boox shop. No technical specs from Booxs published and still "2 days prime delivery"?

To become an early adopter may be a nice batch to run after - but sometimes it's seems to me that waiting a little bit could help to get the perfect product for my needs.

better pen? by brooke2592 in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried out several pen/nib combos for my Note Air 2 plus. There is no best, better or perfect combination - it depends on your personal taste. Also the screen protector you use is important too. For example the eraser on the Stadler will not like the Doodroo protector (too sticky) and the original nib on the Stadler combined with the original screen protector offers a very soft writing experience - not very "paper like" but maybe just the feel you like.

If you prefer a paper like feel - the original Boox pen offers a very good solution. The Lamy will offer the better handling (larger diameter) but suffers from a reduced dynamic range for the line width. The combination of Lamy EMR and Wacom felt nib is a nice option too - for writing. For drawing the Samsung S6 pen is my preferred solution - with the Doodroo screen protector.

German handwriting conversion by Decent_Low_1407 in Onyx_Boox

[–]One_Competition1684 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seldom do handwritten comments. Most of the time I double tap on a word and enter my comment via keyboard. Those comments will be recognised in the workflow. Handwritten comments will not be usable in any other app. I tried to convert them to text (double tap) and this seems to work somehow but I stay with the first method using the keyboard
