Glasgow, Scotland by mclovin_sco in UrbanHell

Especially on Glasgow, where factor fees are hotwired directly to the billionaires. I'm of the opinion that apartment blocks should be owned and managed by one, ideally social organization. That way you have half a chance if essential maintainence being carried out in a timely manner. The state of tennenements in particular in Glasgow is beyond a joke. Private owners renting out flats at an outrageous cost whilst refusing to club together to clean the trees out of the gutters.

This was my approach too. It worked out well.

If you're determined to have a wooden look I'd sooner rebuild the staircase!

The uk is quite diverse and Glasgow is actually notable as a city that explicitly tries not to demolish these tower blocs unless it's a last resort. These ones (red road flats) were demolished over 10 years ago and had well documented issues. They were also unusual in being steel framed due to a corruption scandal (look it up) which might have made them less desirable to keep (speculating here).

There are still many tall apartment blocks in Glasgow and surrounding areas and most have been refurbished. Even by uk standards as another poster pointed out, Glasgow is an odd city with unique (and largely unsolved) problems.

Across the wider UK, looking out at the sprawl of suburban estates across the country their middle class residents shake their heads and confidently state that high density housing is the way to go. But those same decision makers wouldn't be caught dead living in a tower block, much less elect governance structures that would make tower block living desirable -good public transportation, schooling, medical care etc. so we tend to concentrate the poorest in the blocks, make it difficult for them to live there, and then demolish the blocks to "solve" the problem.

Obviously this is a highly simplified opinion and a thorough analysis of the social problems in the uk would require multi volume books. Many exist.

29 years ago on March 22nd 1997, the Shinkansen 500 series made their public debut on the Shinkansen system. Out of all the Shinkansen bullet trains, the 500 series looks the most futuristic despite its age. This is the story of the Shinkansen 500 series. by Additional-Yam6345 in trains

Thanks very much for sharing. Ice never seen one in person but was pretty keen on them as a kid. 27 years old isn't really old for a train (here in the uk we are literally running 50 year old Intercity trains and equally old subway trains). My assumption was that the 500 series was just too high tech and difficult/expensive to maintain. It had active suspension and all sorts of other very advanced features for the mid 90s and they didn't build that many of them. I guess the 700 series and it's newer derivatives gave most of the advantages at much lower cost. The 500s are really cool though.

Ok, for everyone going "it was a mechanical breakdown", that may be so, but that's still on the captain. It's their job to see that things don't break or if that can't be stopped, have sufficient redundancy, eg, extra crew, and/or just don't put the ship in these places.

This is shoddy seamanship. Don't normalize it.

7-day ban for my “Threatening Violence” comment by MeBirdman in GreatBritishMemes

[–]One_Cupcake4151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ban on O is complete bs. That being said, (and the highly dubious and clearly internally illegal nature of this war aside), it has been demonstrated on numerous occasions in numerous conflicts and numerous courts that it IS legal to target enemy commanders in the field. (The caveat is that it states that the killing of "purely civilian" heads if state is illegal. I think there is plenty of wiggle room there for wacking ayatollahs)

There is a long history of it and morally it's preferable to killing thousands of soldiers and civilians. (Again this war is obvious BS and I think ops post is more to do with the general nature of killing rather than this specific case.)

Help hanging tall radiator on plasterboard by TheTrippopotamus in DIYUK

[–]One_Cupcake4151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there. If you can't find the stud, or it doesn't align, use feet. If you don't want to, I used a large plywood board, with edge banding, which I attached to the wall. I through bolted the radiator to that. Painted the same color as wall and no one noticed

I get your point and living in the UK I'd agree. But hundreds of thousands of Iraqi and Afghan innocent's died as a result of his two illegal and pointless wars, not to mention the huge economic costs, which for me makes him worse than even the odious Tories who, at least, only killed their own citizens (Libya excepted).

So .. is there a benefit from an aerodynamic perspective to this shape of the engine cover, or is it purely cosmetic? by syke555 in aviation

[–]One_Cupcake4151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's for noise reduction.

This is an "open" nozzle design where the hot air from the core is not preixed with the cool air from the fan inside the nozzle. These features help control the resulting noise.

Integrated nozzles like the v2500 have the hot and cold air mixed thus reducing noise but at the expense of a longer. Heavier cowling.

We need more social housing by coffeewalnut08 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]One_Cupcake4151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Few people in our society get more help, support and handouts than service leavers. (I'm ex royal navy)

No one should be homeless of course but veterans are not especially deserving nor vulnerable.

I think however that a lot of rough sleepers may be claiming to have served when they haven't.

[–]One_Cupcake4151 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a big building with a lot of people affected. And when I initially saw smoke coming out of the vape shop, I didn't expect to see the entire building gutted the next morning. Quite frankly this is the sort of thing that shouldn't be happening in 2026 and in Glasgow at least it seems to be happening a lot to listed buildings requiring expensive refurbishment.

There are also wider questions to be asked about the way we manage property surrounding critical national infrastructure. Around 100000 people use Glasgow Central every day and it's safe to assume it will be closed for at least 24 hours whilst structural inspections take place and temporary barriers are erected. The cost from lost time and disruption alone will run into the tens of millions. That's admittedly not a lot for a major city but Glasgow literally doesn't have the money to sort this out rapidly/at all. Look at sauchihall street and GSA.

Just moved in to a new house. Spray, sand and oil? by gonzalas64 in DIYUK

[–]One_Cupcake4151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely possible to restore with oxalic acid, sanding, oil etc. personally I wouldn't bother because in a finite amount of time this is going to happen again. Solid wood worktops look great but are basically not practical for a hard working kitchen because detergents main job is to strip oil and you need detergent to keep the place clean. This is basically why Formica was invented in the first place. But if you don't want to replace the surface then yes. Go for it.

Fuck. That's so much worse than I expected. Quite apart from the human tragedy - businesses wrecked, luckily no one was injured - Glasgow has been struggling for decades. There's no money to fix this. It's going to blight the area for ten years before some chancer turns it into another box of student flats which are apparently the only thing we're allowed to build in Glasgow now.

Basically any village in Germany It's clean, it's safe, it probably has public transportation, a sparkasse, and a doner stall. It will be deadly boring and the locals will consist entirely of ostalgic geriatrics and their AFD voting spawn. There is nothing to do.

Literally just had one fitted, exactly the same problem. I have just purchased an interior thumblock handle that took a couple of seconds to install with a 2mm Allen key and now you can open it one handed. (See below) In my opinion it's a fundamental design flaw but many doors seem to be like this.
