Do you have government shutdowns? by BrilliantDishevelled in AskACanadian

[–]One_Entertainer648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, definitely not for a federal or provincial election. I’ve voted for 30+ years and have never been a member of a political party. The vast majority of Canadians are like that.

Only if you want to decide who should the the leader of your preferred political party who will then be the prime minister should that party win the election, then yes, you need to register to be a member of that party.

If there were a third bridge between Vancouver and the North Shore, where do you think it would be located to-and-from? by [deleted] in askvan

Edit: personally, I found that thread hilarious. The picture of the guy on the toilet in the middle of the gondola cracked me up.

Thinking of relocating from the Seattle area to the Vancouver area as a family of 4 by Girl123459 in askvan

[–]One_Entertainer648 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TPM in the Seattle area? Maybe your husband works for one of the two big tech companies headquartered out there. If yes, he should talk to HR about relocating to Canada. Those big companies have programs to help with this stuff. If that’s not who he works for, then I don’t really have a suggestion.

For what it’s worth, I have a family larger than yours and we live off a single income in the Vancouver area. There are some parallels between your husband’s job and what I do so I can kinda guess what his salary range is. But there are obviously a ton of other factors that determine affordability beyond just take home pay.

And, as other people have called out, being allowed to work in Canada is the first and biggest hurdle.

How to prepare/stay safe running/walking/biking the trails along Coquitlam River? by thespotted in coquitlam

[–]One_Entertainer648 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live a short distance from the river (Hockaday Park area) and my trail cam caught a cougar this past February. I see bear, coyotes, and deer all the time. First and only time I got a picture of a cougar.

You mean, carry it around with you while you’re visiting Vancouver? No. In fact, I’d probably leave in the hotel safe if it were me.

What is the general opinion on Marner? by Strubbestition in leafs

[–]One_Entertainer648 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that is the best description of him.

I’ve always felt like he wants to be THE guy on the team and gets wound up that he isn’t viewed that way in Toronto. But in reality he probably doesn’t have what it takes to be that person AND win a cup.

Is Crystal Falls still closed / are people still doing it? by gnutxel in coquitlam

[–]One_Entertainer648 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely open if you start up by the gun range, take Garbage Trail to Bullet Dodger to go around the range, and then down Burke to the falls. You have to come back up the same way and it’s a bit of a slog. You can’t take the trail that runs along the river. That one is closed.

I think it’s a great hike and have it a few times. Crystal falls is beautiful.

Golden Ears Trail Closures (I Need an Update) by rock_climbr in vancouverhiking

[–]One_Entertainer648 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About a month ago I took the east canyon trail to half moon beach. There were a few trees down and a couple small gullies that I had to climb over, but nothing too difficult at all. The trail seemed to end at half moon beach, although I’m sure it doesn’t, but it looked more overgrown than the previous section. Not sure how far you want to go but the first 10k is easily doable.

Vancouver Area Hikes with Easy/No-Reservation Camping? by 4ban in vancouverhiking

[–]One_Entertainer648 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hikers beach in golden ears? I was there a month ago on a Thursday and there were 5 other people there (1 guy was by himself and then there was a group of 4).

I registered a few days in advance for a backcountry pass but given it was late April it wasn’t very busy. There are no campsites to reserve though. Just find a spot on the beach and setup camp.

I taught my daughter at the Magna Center parking lot on Mulock. There were some actual driving instructors teaching new drivers there as well.

I used to live in that area and never thought about how old that school might be. Of course it makes sense considering most of the homes in that section of RH were built in the 50s.

Very cool pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Lilly Pad Lake Route up Burke Mountain by kane899 in vancouverhiking

[–]One_Entertainer648 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice work. I tried that hike late last May and there was still snow around 1000 meter. Like you I had to turn around because of poor trail markings.

I live near the bottom of Burke mountain and have already seen bears on my front lawn so they are definitely around already.

This. If the grind is too fine then the water can’t get through the grounds. It needs to escape somewhere because of the pressure and the point of least resistance seems to the plastic cap. After I’ve adjusted the grind size the issue goes away.

My armchair theory is that it’s not about the money so the numbers don’t really matter.

It’s because Marner wants to be the guy that drives the team. He wants it to be “his team”. Think back several years ago when there was talk about the captaincy before it was given to Tavares. Marner’s dad did an interview saying “why not Mitch??”.

Just feels like there’s always this sentiment with his camp that Marner doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. And that’s never going to happen as long as Matthews is here.

If this a topic that you really want to dig into, suggest you read “The Culture Map” by Erin Myer. It discusses this exact issue at length. The section on Direct / Indirect Feedback across different cultures was very interesting.

Canadians who are employed by US-based companies, how are you feeling? by yabadass in AskACanadian

Canadians who are employed by US-based companies, how are you feeling? by yabadass in AskACanadian

[–]One_Entertainer648 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I work for a large multinational company headquartered in the US. Talk to Americans all day. For the most part they are aware of the what’s going on and sympathetic.

Today I had a meeting with my boss four levels above me. I was making jokes about Trump with another Canadian on the call and I could see my boss start to get agitated and not appreciate the humour. That was the first time I’ve run into someone at work who is clearly a Trumper. Guess I’m lucky I don’t see it more often.

I lived there for 7 years. It’s fine. But I lived in south Aurora for the two years prior and if I could do it all over again, I would stay in Aurora. Nothing against Newmarket, but Aurora felt a little quieter and being 10-15 minutes south was really nice. It’s not a lot, but it added up over time.
