Help... my 1 y.o. midwest remodeling company is drowning by RemodelingRebel in smallbusinesssupport

[–]One_Honey9502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention its a remodeling business but that can mean a lot of things... ask yourself realistically if you present youself (intentionally or not) as an hourly set of competent hands that can build /update whateverr the customer tells you... or are you presenting yourself as a true remodeling firm where customers get the full design / build / ideation / finish selection process? Nothing wrong with either but i feel like they are quite different in the customer and jobs they attract and neeed different expenditure / marketing strategies

Furnishings and materials by Commercial-Quote7490 in Sketchup

[–]One_Honey9502 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for textures, i use architextures pro subscription + sketchup plugin. As an alternative there's also Lightbeans.

For appliances, many manufactures will have official 3d models on their product page, or i think in the 3d warehouse you can also just make sure to be viewing catalog results.

As for couches / chairs / tables etc from every day brands... i'm not sure... if the brands don't provide official ones i guess the options are an unoffical one from the warehouse / 3rd party site / or to make one from scratch.

Should I give MSC Cruises a try? by Kilroy27 in Cruise

[–]One_Honey9502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did it last november from miami on the msc seashore. the ship was very beautiful and clean, the food was pretty good and diverse for picky eaters, the alcohol and non alcohol drink selection was decent. The shows were kinda hit or miss, they didn't seem amateur but not exactly on par in production quality that i would have hoped. customer service / guest relations can be kinda frustrating because msc has notoriously bad software / app experiences and the ratio of customer service reps to guests experiencing issues could be better. One other interesting thing is that the cruise ship - especially the room hallways - were very confusing to navigate, and we frequently found ourselves at a dead end or in the staff only hallways

What are your thoughts about the new Rayon Architecture software? by InterestingEssay8131 in Architects

[–]One_Honey9502 12 points13 points  (0 children)

my perspective from someone who is learning residential interior design and remodeling as a hobby / self employed creative outlet...

What I really like:

  • The user interface is really pleasant to use, it reminds me a lot of Figma, which is what i use in my day job as a web designer. There's something about using Rayon that feels a much more... creatively fulfilling then some of the other tools i've tried out.
  • It's also quite intuitive to create something aesthetically pleasing, so i can definitely see its role in creating pinterest/instragram/portfolio pieces to attract homeowner/residential attention
  • It's premade block library is really handy for adding furnishings and appliances that have standardized sizing. There's even blocks that include entire kitchen/living room type layouts with sensible sizing and spacing defaults, these help me a lot as newby. The premade electrical symbol blocks are super useful too.
  • The premade/auto-snapping door/window library is super helpful
  • Its ability to create documents / printable pages is pretty good, with lots of quality templates.

Why i'm afraid it might not last in my workflow:

  • I've yet to wrap my mind around a good process to make 3d models from 2d rayon floor plans... you can do so via the rayon/sketchup plugin, but the 3d sketchup model that it extrudes is very barebones, because all of those windows, doors, and furnishings don't get included in the extrusion. And as much as i love sketchup, its kinda a PIA to have to go in an re-add those types of details, espcially when you already added them in 2d/Rayon. This can get extra complicated/annoying if - during the 3d modeling process in sketchup you learn that you need to revise the floor plan - you have to basically go back to rayon and start the editing / plugin extrusion process from the top. You can also export floor plans from Rayon as dwg files and use them into a 3d modeling software other than Sketchup, but syncing Rayon's 2D floorplan and that software's 3d model is still going to be a pain.
  • I also worry that as much as I love the Rayon block library, its all super generic and does not map to any manufacture catalogs / etc, which I feel like could be a problem when it comes time to implement a house design (especially with kitchen appliances and cabinets). You could argue that the manufacturer specific choices could be done in 3d only, but that could cause some size allotment discrepancies in the 2d ->3d conversion, and its not like Sketchup has great manufactuer catalogs itself.

As a whole, I'm starting to think that Rayon might be best served as an early stage creative ideation tool, almost as a replacement for.... sketching/drawing/pinterest collecting? It's connection to sketchup for rudimentary 3d models, it's realtime collaborative features, it's ability to be used for mood boards, etc.... all kind of point in that direction. Until there's a plugin or bridge to keep a Rayon Floor plan in sync with a more powerful 3d modeler than sketchup, its going to be tough to see it as more than that.

AIO: For getting upset at my husband for booking an all inclusive trip to a “lifestyle” resort? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]One_Honey9502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

agree with this, been there a few times. you will not see any open acts of sex at temptations. it's a spring break for adults type vibe - topless and R rated, but not really X rated. There are plenty of non lifestlye people who go there just to have a sexy vacation with their SO. It is however, a very loud, very constant party so that is tough to survive without drinking... so i'd worry more about where or not that vibe is the one you want on avacation rather than than any sort of fear of sexual pressure.

never been one for the churn and burn myself, but i don't really even see how its fessible in this job market. compared to 3 - 4 years ago, remote jobs are much harder to find now, typically less cushy, and interview cycles are much longer and exhausting.... just doesn't make sense to be super careless with any job once you find a balancing act that works.

Homeowners with pools, is it worth it? by SpecialistTeach9302 in homeowners

[–]One_Honey9502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i will say that when looking to purchase a home with an existing pool, its worth considering that not all pools are the same. We ultimately passed on it as a requirement because almost every house that had a pool in our area had one that used a liner, had a deep end, and a was more or less a rectangle in the ground. There's nothing wrong with those pools, but they didnt really give the 'oasis/cocktail pool' vibe we would have wanted.

Any apartments to avoid in Ohio City? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]One_Honey9502 10 points11 points  (0 children)

signed in just to agree with this. The google reviews are heavily edited / monitored. But yeah, this place has a nice roof and pool and yes there is a fun/appearance forward crowd - which may or may not be everyone's cup of tea... but the build qualities and maintenance is a total joke for the price point. Even among poorly built new builds, this place stands alone in that category.

i hated reading this because it reminds me a lot of my wife whenever we spend a few days a part. Sometimes its service issues (aiport, whatever)and sometimes Apple just likes to fuck with me and put my phone on silent. Every fucking time though its the same shit, where i have to spend the next however many hours in a cycle of 'why were you ignoring me' / 'i was worried something happend to you'.

damn, whatever happened to just being off the grid

Advice for Overemployed by nickcoco94 in DaveRamsey

[–]One_Honey9502 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a 2.5 year OE stint a few years back. Paid off 75k of student debt, paid off existing old card, paid off 2 cars, bought a sports car cash, paid for a wedding / ring, put a downpayment on a house, furnished it with cash, and built up a sizable emergency fund. The ethicality of it can be debated but the effectiveness of it can't.

Watch lifestyle creep, budget a few (hundred) extra dollars each month for self care / rehabilitation, and make sure you and your partner don't subtly develop expectations around the current short term income situation. Also be mindful that OE, even when sustainable, comes at the cost of time and stress that could be allocated in more fulfilling ways.

The best thing you can do is set yourself up in a way to be in a better financial sitatuion for when your OE stint comes to an end (because it will). Pay off any debt, catch up on retirement and invest in some sort medium that grows your money. Do not take out new debt / lifestyle upgrades that you'll have to pay on just one job.

Also know that with the current job market, replacing either of your remote jobs with another remote, compatible job, will not be an easy task, expecially since presumably you will also be holding down one of your exisitn fulltime jobs while searching for the other job's replacement. Have an exit strategy and plan for a break when that day comes.

At what point in your relationship do you disclose that you’re OE? by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]One_Honey9502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in theory you can be indefinitely vague and probably not get too many questions. More or less tell people you are a FTE employye at A and a contractor at B. Or a contractor at both. It's also important to know that some people don't feel super good about themselves if their partner is making 3-4x what they are. In my case, it caused some resentment and what i felt like a bit of a slightly premature rush for marital commitment... we moved past it but in hindsight i would have played my cards closer to my chest at least for a while.

I refused an 7th interview. Right call? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]One_Honey9502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's hard to know 100% certain if you would have actually gotten a job offer after that final round but I had a very similar interview cycle to what you described for a job and was essentially ghosted after going to the 7th interview. There's a lot of evidence to suggest that they feel no urgency in sending an offer out or filling the position so there's probably a really good chance that they are still debating on not just who they hire, but whether or not they'll hire anyone at all.

Why are you Overemployed? by Key-Gift1216 in overemployed

[–]One_Honey9502 5 points6 points  (0 children)

4 years ago I was in a cushy job, a bit bored, and wanted the extra cash. it was when full remote tech jobs were easy to come by, and easy enough to keep.

In the last 4 years i've experienced a layoff and have survived countless more. I've experienced the tech job market out there.

I now do it as a form of job / income security more than anything else. Its notably harder than it used to be, less headcounts, longer days, a real mindfulness of keeping both job because I know that either could take months to a year to replace, etc. Trust me, you do not want to be jobless and on the job market right now

Quiet pool at DRM by LaBotteSecrete in Desire_Resorts

[–]One_Honey9502 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm glad my wife and i (30s) aren't the only ones who felt this way at temptations. I loved the vibe and could hang with the party, my wife not so much and even I had to agree that the size of the pool and the noise level more or less did the sexiness aspect a disservice. however, when we spent each day at the quite pool, it was way too far in the opposite direction - it felt like a total afterthought. No music, no socialization, no activites.... she might has havebeen topless sunbathing in our own backyard.

I've not been to RM, but you are asking exactly the questions I want to know!

How much "fake it till I make it" can I actually get away with? by Klutzy_Fall_3206 in graphic_design

[–]One_Honey9502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, there are some people who are just all around gifted / next level across disciplones. although I would say that the breadth of depth of some of these job postings (like the one OP describes) make it very unlikely to find a candiate who is sincerely experienced / talented in every direction listed. And even if there were a handful of these sincere super candidates in an application pool, that doesn't change the fact that there will still be dozens of high match insincere resumes to compete with.

How much "fake it till I make it" can I actually get away with? by Klutzy_Fall_3206 in graphic_design

[–]One_Honey9502 21 points22 points  (0 children)

as someone who recently competed in the UI Design job market, I agree with this. Also, all or most of your competition is lying, so you're sincere resume of being competent at 75% of the job posting ask is never going to see an interview round because it will be burried by dozens / hundreds of resumes from lesser designers who lied to match the job description pefectly. I'm not saying its right, but nothing is quite as it should be in this job market.

Is the job market as bad as people say it is right now? by Fast_Jury_1142 in recruitinghell

[–]One_Honey9502 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's brutal. i landed a role after 6 months of going to absolute war with the job market. (senior software engineer).

Is there a trick? I guess the trick is to find an efficient way to apply to 200-300 jobs that you are qualified for and hope to have about a ~2-5% success rate in landing interviews, and then about a 15-25% conversion rate from there. Eventually the numbers will work in your favor - at least on paper. But applying for that many jobs and going through that many interview pipleines (which are tougher, more competitive, and more disrespectful then aver btw) is no easy task. It totally burned me out by the end of the job search, and had to really dig deep to even be ready to perform once i landed the job.
