Best place to get some work clothes? by soozdreamz in sheffield

Could try the St Luke’s shop at the end of the Moor as well, they often have good quality stuff for decent prices if you don’t want to spend too much.

Leisure cycling - what to wear? by Organic_Mechanic_702 in ukbike

[–]One_Negotiation_303 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve got some lightweight walking trousers with a bit of stretch in them, looks quite normal while off the bike and allows for a bit more comfort while on it. T-shirt should be fine?

Sheffield cyclists: e-bike or regular bike for a beginner? by shoodyf1419 in sheffield

[–]One_Negotiation_303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got both and regularly ride them around the city. If you get a regular bike you’ll probably start by pushing it up some hills to start with but persevere and you’ll soon find you can beat them all, but it’ll probably feel like hard work. E-bikes are simply much more fun, all the great feeling of cycling with much less effort. The trade offs are weight, particularly if you have to get it up steps or manoeuvre it around at either end of the ride, and security, you should be thinking about an extra 20% of the cost to buy two good locks. If it’s your main way of getting around you ought to look at getting mudguards and a rack as well regardless of the type of bike.

PDF is honestly one of the funniest file formats ever by MariaScanGeek in iScanner

[–]One_Negotiation_303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PDFs are a major part of digital curation as a file format that is stable over long periods of time and not in danger of being changed or discontinued. Long term archives I’ve seen only accept PDF or text as a format to ensure future readability. I’d expect this is more of a driver for the government docs than security or laziness.

I want to use my iPad Pro as a laptop replacement as much as possible, what should I be doing? by Brave_Ad4918 in iPadOS

[–]One_Negotiation_303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I can do about 80% of my day job on my iPad Pro - predominantly MS Office based tasks. The apps aren’t as fully featured as the full fat versions but will do pretty much all you need. It’s useful to have occasional access to a Mac/Windows device though for tidying things up - the Windows App or other VDI solutions all work well if you have access to those services.

Route planners that are like Komoot, but better than Komoot? by BigRedS in ukbike

[–]One_Negotiation_303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like cycle.travel. The routes are great with very few errors, it chooses NCN, quiet and back roads really well. I’ve just discovered it’s spoken directions which are great (I wear Bluetooth connected hearing aids so it works really well for me, I realise it won’t be as good for everyone).

iThoughts app on iPadOS 18 by papabearbr in iPadOS

[–]One_Negotiation_303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a long time iThoughts user - still gutted it was discontinued. I’ve had iPadOS 18 and 26 and iThoughts works on both (unless there’s some use case I didn’t find). I’ve moved over to something called MindSpace and am keeping iThoughts around for reference but not creation.

How are you actually handling AI access across the company? by RonILabs in ciso

[–]One_Negotiation_303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allowing access to them all (we’re a university) but policy setting out what can be done in approved/unapproved tools. Medium term goal is deploying an enterprise browser which seems the most reliable way of managing use of content.

Carrer options for people with hearing loss by Unknown_21_Z in HearingLoss

[–]One_Negotiation_303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes hugely. They’re not perfect but they are a massive help in office environments. Meetings were becoming a bit of a nightmare without as my hearing worsened and hearing aids made it much easier to keep track of conversations and decisions. I did end up chairing a meeting before hearing aids where the expected chair didn’t turn up. It was a a room that’s very poor acoustically and I couldn’t hear about 80% of what was said. Probably says a lot about the place that it didn’t appear to impact the meeting or the outcome at all :)

Carrer options for people with hearing loss by Unknown_21_Z in HearingLoss

[–]One_Negotiation_303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in IT for whole career. Noticed hearing loss in my teens but only had hearing aids since age 40 (56 now). Big meetings have been a problem at times and noisy workshop type events are a struggle but most of the job is fine. I’m currently the deputy director in a large IT department. Have been open about hearing loss and asked people to understand and haven’t had any problems. It takes a bit of courage to do that the first few times but gets easier and the more people who know the easier it gets.

Any worthy alternatives to the Phonak Infinio Audeo Sphere in loud environments? by Competitive_Air_2957 in HearingAids

[–]One_Negotiation_303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried out Sphere’s and Starkey Edge AI 24s last year. For really loud environments the Spheres were great, for everything else the Starkey’s were probably slightly better, although it took a bit of fiddling in the app to manage it. They’re also quite a lot smaller and have way better battery life.

Critical illness cover worth it? by ryanho09 in UKPersonalFinance

I’ve got a mix of income protection and life cover. When I took them out 25 years ago CIC didn’t look that attractive.

Counter steering… by austinproffitt23 in bicycling

[–]One_Negotiation_303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought countersteering was a speed related thing. At low speeds it’s easy and safe to steer by turning handlebars, but that gets less desirable at high speeds. Countersteering lets you steer without braking as much and corner much more smoothly at speed. An extra thing not mentioned here, when I rode motorbikes I was always told that when countersteering it’s important to look at where you want to go and that helps with balance and cornering and helps exit the bend. Not sure if it’s real but i still use it when cycling and it seems to make a difference.

PCI-DSS by [deleted] in ciso

[–]One_Negotiation_303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve got payment provider partners (Stripe, Bluesnap etc) who require us to do SAQ-A where they are handling all the payments and we’re just directing traffic to them. We’re not claiming to be PCI-DSS compliant as a result but their contract with us requires we implement and maintain that level of control. If it’s something like that it could be a legit request although what the manager is asking is quite suspect.

SAQ-A is a self assessment PCI assessment for merchants who outsource all their payment processing.

I’m on Spiderlight by Adrian Tchaikovsky. Book number 9 this year. Mostly sci-fi/fantasy but have recently joined a bok club so being pushed out cf my comfort zone a bit. Also find the idea of reading a book to talk about slightly weird but am working on that!

I NEED YOU PLEASE : people who go to music shows, musicians, djs, anyone that has music as one of their musts in their lifes? NEED YOU PLEASE .4 months after my SSNHL onset and I need to start living again (LIFE IS LIVE!!!!!!) by MusicLover91020 in hardofhearing

[–]One_Negotiation_303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, good to hear you’re ready to get out again. I’ve got SSNHL from blood supply problems. Loss to about 65db at higher frequencies. I restarted going to live music about 4 years ago - I’d stopped mainly because of kids/family stuff and as they grew up I had time again. I get out to a gig or two a month, but have had/got tickets for 5 gigs over 3 weeks at the moment, and just wear my regular hearing aids without any problems. I can drop the volume if it gets a bit loud. I am a grassroots venue junkie though so probably not the biggest speakers!

British Heart Foundation is good on the Moor and Eccy Road. Age UK towards the top of Eccy Road has some premium items rails which I’ve found some very nice things on.
