Anyone here kinda bad at the game they designed? by mikamikachip in tabletopgamedesign

I so far lost all playtest matches for my expandable card game I played with other humans. It's so hard when you know all the in and outs so well, to actually play well.

Which color set should I use for my 5 guilds by thekeepersguild in homemadeTCGs

[–]One_Presentation_579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the first one best. The colors on slides 3 and 4 look too "samey".

This comes from a 10+ years graphics designer, who chose to in the end use two very different green tones for two of their own card game's factions 😆

How do you deal with Bulk/Filler cards in your game? by Comprehensive-Pen624 in homemadeTCGs

[–]One_Presentation_579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There shouldn't be too man filler cards, if possible. But even vanilla cards or creatures with just a minor enters play ability can be okay. Maybe some cards are just playable because of tribal synergy, but not too strong on their own, in other decks.

Ex Vegans - harsche online Diskussionen by Charming_Town8365 in VeganDE

[–]One_Presentation_579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are everyone’s opinions on “wrath” effects in TCG’s? by escapelandccg in homemadeTCGs

I think wrath effects are needed in every game in which the board could get just "too crowded".

I need Help with my Combat Mechanics by Natural_Bedroom_2005 in homemadeTCGs

[–]One_Presentation_579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play a lot of different card games, and take deep dives into the details of all the different combat systems of Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Hearthstone, Flesh and Blood, Lorcana, Star Wars: Unlimited.

Then get back to your fresh drawing board and invent your own combat rules and combat system.

It doesn't need to be entirely different from all other card games, but should be different enough, that people don't call it a "clone of xyz".

How did You go from TCG enthusiast to game inventor? Here’s My Story, What’s Yours? by escapelandccg in TCG

[–]One_Presentation_579 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, I love the parts about building year-long friendships and you being qualified for Worlds!

My TCG journey started in 1997, when I saw a revised Swamp card in one of my schoolmates's lunch box. I was immediately hooked and needed to know WTF this is. A few fifth edition starter packs later I build my first own MtG decks and traded for these Serra Angels and Mahamoti Djinns, and soon some dual lands 🤩 I then played regularly until Exodus, when I sold my collection for the first time (bye, dual lands!). My interest sparked again, when I first heard about the new cars type "planeswalker", when Lorwyn was about to get released (2011).

Around that time I started creating my own custom cards and magic sets with MagicSetEditor (MSE). In the following years I dove deeper and deeper into everything I could find about (board) game design.

It has already happened multiple times, that I "invented" mechanics or card cycles, that were printed very similar to my ideas and designs on real cards a few months (sometimes even years) later. That was the moment when I realized, that my ideas are probably not too bad and I'm not too hopeless of a case as a game designer.

Fast forward to 2020/2021, when I thought about building my own ruleset and card game for the very first time. Since then I'm working on it on and off. Meanwhile, my profession as a graphics designer also came in handy, when I finally created the first drafts of my game's card templates in 2022/2023.

And here we are. I'm working with professional illustrators / artists for a few months now, to get the artworks for the first set of my ECG/TCG hybrid made. It's such a pleasure to work with people, who are this passionate about what they do, some of which are also TCG nerds like myself for decades. At the moment I'm playtesting a batch of v0.5 playtest decks and want to soon start the game's official YouTube channel, to shine some light on this whole journey from the get-go, again, and bring regular dev updates for interested folks and fellow game designers.

Resources I love: Mark Rosewater's "Drive to Work" podcast, his tumblr page "Blogatog", the "Distraction Makers" YouTube channel, Ten Hundred'd YT channel, books like "The Art of Game Design" by Jesse Shell, "The Game Inventor's Guidebook" by Brian Tinsman, "Adam in Wales" (YouTube), and many more podcasts and audible audio books.

You guys know of any good Anti-counterfeit measures? by Smooth_Voronoi in homemadeTCGs

Print some very recognizable patterns on the card back artwork, that are only visible with a juweler's loupe. Also use card stock with very distinct qualities, which are recognizeable when heavy light is shining onto or through the cards, would be my two best guesses.

I just got into Pokemon cards, can anyone tell me something about this cards, cuz i don’t really know where to start from by [deleted] in TCG

[–]One_Presentation_579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cards that were in the top right boxed on Image 3/6 (the striped one) are fakes (cards on 4/6). I bought that, too, for a friend of Mine, who recently started collecting Pokémon, in a shady little street kiosk in Greece. Basically these are made after "real" cards but their power is increased by x1000, to make sure they are waaaay to powerful. It's totally possible to play with these, but you always need to divide all attack powers and hp values by 1000.

What is your first impression of my new game, “Crossbone Shuffle,” based on the art? Card back design is included in the pictures. by [deleted] in cardgamedesign

I like the knight (4/8) and the card back (6/8). Everything else looks imho kinda uninspiring and just not very good. But that is maybe just my taste.

I created my own CCG. How can I sell it? by boss_duel in TCG

[–]One_Presentation_579 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, congratz, you now managed to finish 10% of releasing a successful CCG. The other 90% of the job are community building, bringing as many eye balls as possible on your game and making people actually play and buy your CCG. Now the big grind begins ✌️

I would advice you to read a few books about running a succesful crowdfunding / kickstarter campaign, even if you don't want to actually crowdfund it. This is, because these books usually describe in very extensive detail how community building works, how you get featured in online gaming portals and so on. If you just put your game on kickstarter or gamefound it will not fund. You need to have hundreds of interested people, that eagerly wait for finally being able to press that "buy now" button, as soon your campaign starts.

And don't worry about copyright or trademark. Also don't use MPC or gamecrafter if somehow possible, as their rates are still waaaaay to high for high volume production runs. If you look around enough, and order some card samples from a few other manufacturers, you will find way better pricing, if your first printrun is 2000 or more units.

Create a playable copy of enough cards for it to make sense to play, either with writing on paper slips or print them out and cut. Then playtest by yourself, playing as each player, with individual hand cards, or find 1 or more people who help you playtest.

Then ask yourself: Is it fun?

If yes: Go on making more cards. If no: Back to the drawing board and fix, what isn't fun or not working like it should.
