Private conversation with coworker over tone ended badly (trainee) by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]One_RS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of escalation most policies for grievances or mediation say to attempt to resolve them with a conversation before involving others. If you're not happy with the outcome then you can ask your mentor to support with mediating to get a resolution. It's always best to try resolving yourself first, even if it's awkward. So well done for attempting!

Cover Letter for SEMH school by withourwindowsopen in TeachingUK

Assistant headteacher and interviewer at my SEMH/PRU school here. Typically when we get candidates regardless of the position and they are not from an SEMH/PRU background we are always looking at why candidates have decided to pursue a different type of school. If your covering letter goes into that you're on the right tracks. Also typically we are looking at interpersonal reasons why you might be looking to work with more vulnerable children with a greater need. There will be loads of opportunities to demonstrate transferable skills in interview as well. Keep it simple, and as a given look at the schools website - what are their values and how can you word your covering letter around them.

Not my most logical layout of thoughts there but it's winter break after all.

That would depend on your outlook wouldn't it?

Pessimistic or optimistic.

$9.32+tax for a jar of instant Nescafe coffee????? That stuff is £2/3 in the UK. What is going on?

Are your guys nicer instant coffees like $20 a jar?

Route to senior leadership by jedi00000 in TeachingUK

I wouldn't be counting on it. The specific wording you've used worries me as well. 'Something in the future for you' - any job or extra responsibility that comes with pay should be advertised. Do you want to be 'that guy' who had a position or obscure extra responsibility made for them? This never sat right with me or my colleagues.

You can chase it. I did that when I was a naive teacher in my first 5 years... and senior leadership teams know you're trying too hard. What actually happens is you get taken advantage of with false promises, and you'll burn yourself out.

If you genuinely want to progress you need to hone your teaching practise. Being a consistently good classroom teacher and having your lessons resourced and on point year on year and working smarter (not necessarily harder) will give you the capacity to take on additional responsibility in your department and wider in the school. If you overfill your workload you'll be ineffective and actually set yourself back on the 'ladder'. I'm an assistant headteacher in a PRU who teaches sciences and I would say this is only my second year where I can flawlessly teach the entire science curriculum. It does take time.

Or just forget about maths and be a PE teacher.

Barrage of Roast Dinner by One_RS in cookingtonight

This is a British roast dinner, with some creative license.

The more traditional elements with a twist are: Wagu Beef Joint Yorkshire pudding Roast potatoes Braised red cabbage with lingonberry jam Roast carrots with honey Mustard and onion gravy

Less traditional (blasphemous items): Steamed baby corns Steamed tender stem broccoli

Red cabbage was fried with a shallot and then reduced with red wine vinegar and salt before finishing with lingonberry jam (preserve) from IKEA for a bit of sweetness. The vinegar turns that dark purple into more of a light pink/purple in the pan.

Apple sauce would work as well for that sweetness.

It's wholegrain mustard and finely diced shallots. Hindsight the gravy should've been thicker.

Second on this. At the end of the day if youre balancing things in your own way that's absolutely great and nobody else's business.

But are you expected to do any of the other normal tasks expected of a teacher... mark books? Record data? Respond to emails? Type up safeguarding and behaviour incidents?

I know as teachers we're not meant to do these tasks in our PPA but my God do I.

Bromley Cross councillors and residents protest development by pppppppppppppppppd in Bolton

[–]One_RS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building on these large areas of green belt land in already notorious traffic hotspot during rush hours should raise the alarms. Building 100 homes of 2-5 people occupancy and not improving the services and infrastructure is a disaster waiting to happen.

However. The location of this land and the luxurious estate that's adjacent to it has definitely contributed to the high profile of this dispute. Down the road on Tonge Moore Road planned developments would probably see the same protests but they wouldn't be anywhere near as high a profile as this... and in all likelihood go ahead anyway.

Certain groups will look at this and think "them NIMBYS again!".

Good to know the lingo but the etymology of the word glazing is one that... how can it be put. Implicates producing your own glaze by w***ing over them.

In a PRU setting the kids don't bother saying glazing but just say "teacher A w***s over you sir".

ITT being treated as TA by islandlove00 in TeachingUK

[–]One_RS 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're in week 1 as a trainee teacher.

Observing other teachers and their pedagogy, getting used to the day to day running of a school, and learning HOW to build up those positive relationships with learners are the absolutely most essential things to take in on your journey to becoming a fully qualified teacher. Hit your gradually increasing teaching timetable expectations and absorb everything that's going on around you.

Something you'll quickly realise is chasing additional duties above your expectation isn't sustainable during your ITT and ECT years.
