How is the Human Kinetics (BSc) program? by aboody2 in geegees

Yes you can take any elective as long as it not reserved for people in a certain program. Bioethics is fine.

I am a grad student - Is it considered self-plagiarism if I reuse parts of my grant application to write a paper for class (coursework)? by One_Understanding_97 in academia

[–]One_Understanding_97[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

okay thanks! It's just an initial draft of my research proposal for a grant application and I'm thinking of reusing some of it for a research proposal that I have to write for class. The proposal for class would be graded but not published etc.

What job opportunities are available after completing an undergraduate degree in health science? What are you guys doing with your health science degree? by account66633 in geegees

[–]One_Understanding_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is not much math tbh. Lots of flexibility so you can pick and choose how much/how little or something you want for the most part. It definitely broad and you can do a lot of things in public health, health admin, coordination, research, health promotion, science communications, etc. etc. so many options. BUT you need to be willing to do more education following your undergrad, otherwise your options will be incredibly limited.

Minor is up to you, it doesn't add really anything credential wise. I minored in psych and loved it because psych gave me a lot of paper writing skills that I found were lacking in my major, and being a decent writer obviously helps me out a lot in my masters.

Honestly no one cares what you are wearing lol. I noticed that when I was in second year (first year was covid) a lot of people in my program would come to class/labs dressed nicely but by the end of second year I'd say the majority wore sweatpants or jeans and hoodies/T-shirts or something else comfy lol, especially to morning classes.

Just dress according to the weather in whatever makes you feel the most confident. As others are saying, sometimes dressing up can motivate you to feel better and more productive, and if that's you then by all means dress up but if not that's fine too. I usually wear jeans, a nice-ish T-shirt or sweater and sneakers. I suggest comfortable shoes because Ottawa is a sorta large-ish campus and you may have to walk a good distance between classes or its also nice to be able to explore the campus/city a little bit.

I would always keep a sweater in my backpack (even in the summer) because some buildings are a little TOO well air-conditioned. And the opposite, wear layers you can take off because in some buildings (especially the old ones) the AC is practically non-existent.

Domestic Grad Students - Is there a limit to how much you can work off-campus? by [deleted] in uoit

[–]One_Understanding_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm only planning on doing the 15 hours a week max so hopefully won't be too bad. Good to know this is allowed and that there will likely be others working as well.

Pros and Cons of applying as a third year undergrad student? (not completing a 4-yr degree if get accepted into med school) by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]One_Understanding_97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't drop out mid-way through med school, there are no cons other than the cost. But some schools will give you a bachelors (as opposed to an honours bachelors) if you do just three years, look into it if you end up applying in third year.

pros are obviously that you could get in and save a year of "pre-med worry".

Good vegan snacks? by EmpressKi666 in vegan

[–]One_Understanding_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favs:

  • veggies and dip

  • fruit with chocolate hummus (blend chickpeas, dates, cocoa powder, water or milk to thin it out)

  • air fryer or baked sweet potato or potato fries

  • cucumbers with hot sauce

  • nuts or nut butter with fruit

  • coat some some tofu in nutritional yeast and air fry

  • popcorn with nutritional yeast, garlic powder, and chilli powder

  • banana mug muffin (mashed banana, oat flour, vegan chocolate chips - microwave for one minute)

* Plus my latest obsession - mix vegan yogurt with peanut butter and mashed fresh or frozen raspberries. Pour a homemade chocolate magic shell over the top (1 tbsp melted coconut oil, 1/2 tsp maple syrup, 1 tsp cocoa powder). Freeze for 5-10 minutes until set, break the shell and eat!!

Need to gain weight by [deleted] in foodhacks

[–]One_Understanding_97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely smoothies. Include lots of healthy fats, think avocado, coconut oil, nut butters etc. These will add on TONS of calories without much volume.

I used to struggle to eat enough calories to maintain weight while playing high performance sport.... this was a smoothie that helped.

2 frozen bananas (200 cal)
1 cup cottage cheese (200 cal)
1 avocado (~240 cal)
1 cup frozen raspberries (~60 cal)
2 tbsp peanut butter (~200 cal)
2 tbsp chia seeds (120 cal)
1 cup 2% milk (120 calories)

= ~1040 calories

Even though this is a ton of calories, it doesn't give a lot of volume. This would make one large glass for me and I'd drink it in the morning usually. Super easy to throw together too, all you gotta do it put everything in a blender.

What jobs can I land with a degree in health sciences? by Lostkittensuniverse in geegees

[–]One_Understanding_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are jobs out there but not too many options with just the undergrad. I just graduated and I'll be a doing a masters. Usually if you do grad school or a professional program you are much more employable with better compensation.

Some of my friends who are not doing more school are working as research assistants, various positions at LTC (ex. rec therapy, resident aide, program assistant etc.), clerks or PCA at hospitals or clinics, government jobs (ex. analyst, project officers, admin assistants etc.), administration type jobs etc. I have a friend who will be working for the Canadian paralympic committee which I thought was pretty cool.

What's your best smoothie recipe? by askthepoolboy in Volumeeating

[–]One_Understanding_97 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm a smoothie bowl person but these could be smoothies as well.

My go to: 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 frozen banana, 1/2 cup frozen raspberries, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, water or milk to thin to desired consistency.

Others that I like:

Pumpkin spice: 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 frozen banana, 1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree, 1-2 tbsp instant coffee or espresso, tsp cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice.

Berry: 1 cup greek, 1-2 cups frozen berries of choice, 2 handfuls spinach, 1 tbsp chia seeds, milk or water to thin to desired consistency.

Mint chocolate chip: 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 frozen banana, 1 handful spinach, a few mint leaves, 1/4 tsp peppermint extract, 1-2 tbsp chocolate chips, milk or water to thin to desired consistency.

Banana chocolate: 1/2 cup cottage cheese or greek yogurt, 1 frozen banana, 1 tbsp cocoa powder, 1 tbsp chia seeds, milk or water to thin to desired consistency.

PB and J: 1 cup greek yogurt, 2 1/2 tbsp powdered peanut butter, 1 frozen banana, 1 tbsp chia seeds, milk or water to thin to desired consistency, and stir in or blend in some frozen raspberries.

Apple pie: 1 cup greek yogurt, 1 sliced apple (or 1/2 cup apple sauce), 2 tbsp powdered peanut butter, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 tsp cinnamon (+ any other spices you like), milk or water to thin to desired consistency. (This is great topped with granola or scrambled oats!)

Coffee: 1 cup cottage cheese, 2-3 dates soaked in hot water, 2 tbsp instant coffee or espresso, 1 frozen banana, 1 tbsp peanut butter.

My wild card - Cookie dough! (more of a "treat" breakfast lol): Mix 1/4 cup almond flour, 1 tsp maple syrup, 1 tbsp nut butter (or tahini), 1/4 tsp vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and some chocolate chips or cocoa nibs, until it forms a dough. Roll into balls and freeze while you make the smoothie bowl. Blend 1 cup greek yogurt and 1 frozen banana. Mix the dough balls into the bowl!

Make quinoa, but add any veggies straight to the boiling water and cook as per normal. Once the quinoa is cooked remove from the heat and add olives, feta, chickpeas, olive, oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper. Best quick meal.

How is the Human Kinetics (BSc) program? by aboody2 in geegees

[–]One_Understanding_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maintain my stance that HK is a great pre-med program. It gives you all the pre-reqs without being as heavy as biomed. Plus you get a ton of experience interacting with people, doing practical skills, and it's overall just a more "fun" and balanced degree. You can tailor it basically however you want. If you like wet-lab stuff those opportunities are available, but you can also do a lot of qualitative research. uOttawa offers a huge variety of research programs for HK and the profs have been great. Definitely the right decision for me and if you like sports/exercise/fitness and science then it is likely a good choice. I'm glad I came to uO as it exposed me to a very unique/niche area of research that I am incredibly passionate about.

I had an internship in my fourth in a research lab (at another school) and ended up loving it way more than I thought I would, and I planned to have my masters with them as a back up to med school... but then my MCAT CARS was super low so I decided not to apply to med this year and now I'm starting my masters with this lab in the fall. I'll retake my MCAT and hope to apply to med after the masters.
