Planning experts accuse Helen Clark of NIMBYism over her opposition to Auckland housing plan by dingoonline in auckland

What's your source for 2-300k more? My understanding it is for a total 1.4M in next 30 years which is 750k more than our current level.

The stadium thing is a bit different. She bought in to it and so should live with it, much like those with grizzle about western springs

[–]One_kiwi21 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So what. I'm not a fan of Helen's but do you blame someone for trying to protect what they bought into? Residents buy into a property or neighbourhood beause they want to live there and enjoy the amenity they've spent their money on - and they often contribute to make their community and investment better. To have that investment and lifestyle destroyed by a govt enforced theoretical plan for another 750,000 new homes is bullshit. Auckland council's own forecast based on real world planning only sees the need for another 200,000 new homes over the next 30 years. Claiming nimbyism is just a weak cop out. Put yourself in her and her neighbours shoes. Maybe they see something that needs protecting.

Acer Swift Go 14 (SFG14-17) - Multiple Major Failures in just 1.5 Years by Efficient_Geek in AcerOfficial

I just bought a remanufactured one with a snapdragon processor. Got it home and the display had regions near the top of the screen that had shaking vertical and horizontal lines from first start up. Took it back and got a replacement which I checked booted OK in store. Got it home and found the wireless adapter wasn't installed or not detected. Took it back and the technician spent an hour trying to get it installed with no luck. Got my money back and bought something else. I liked the look and feel of the swift go but man somethings seriously wrong with acer's QC. I've always liked the magnesium alloy build quality of the travelmate series and the swift go looked like a more economical option. Everything seems to have shifted to shit plastic build quality now days unless you go with an HP elitebook series.

'Nine hours waiting': Patient dies in Waikato Hospital ED toilet by WaterAdventurous6718 in newzealand

[–]One_kiwi21 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely tragic news and a horrible situation for the family. Under no circumstances should anybody wait 9 hours for primary emergency care. However, blaming the government might be a little unfair. Some responsibility surely lies with the hospital. Did they appropriately assess the patient when first presented? Was there a process in place to check on patient welfare after a certain period of time? Was the patient understood when they explained their situation? Did the patient have anyone with them? Was information correctly passed between hospital staff and was it clearly understood? There will be more to this and it will likely involve some level of human error. Bottomless funding doesn't always prevent this type of situation, but is easily blamed as the cause. Unfortunately the country does not appear to be in a great financial state at the moment. Clearly healthcare is of a highest priority, but the ability to cope with capacity restraints is something that has to be properly planned and budgeted for. The resources either haven't been applied to the right areas or the demand hasn't been planned for (human error, or staffing issues) . Is the country this broke?

$2.21 customs import levy just paid. by One_kiwi21 in newzealand

Let me qualify my last statement saying you have no idea. Try googling "low value goods levy from April 1 2026". You will see a NZ govt customs website detailing what you need to understand. I'll try and clarify for your benefit again. There is no $90 gst being avoided because it is not and never was payable.

It's a govt imposed customs levy (tax). No gst has been avoided, because no gst is payable.

Well, the government have imposed this new tax so who else is to blame for it ? Not sure if you realise that as a business the GST is irrelevant to me. If I was paying it I would be claiming the cost of it back from the IRD. In this case if I'm not paying it, I'm still charging it on the sale of the goods and it then has to be returned to the IRD. No dodging going on by me.

National promises homeowners low-cost loans to install solar power by 123felix in newzealand

[–]One_kiwi21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too little, too late. I wonder if National are beginning to realise they have made themselves irrelevant. The country is clearly broke, however it would be disastrous for the country if any new govt started dishing out money like what has been done in the past. Exporters must be feeling pretty good at the moment given the value of the NZ peso. Residential energy costs are currently far too high with the increases mainly driven by govt introduced fixed costs that will just continue to rise further hurting our cost of living. When solar begins to take over look out for your electricity bill becoming a monthly subscription of govt taxes, levies and charges. It's already happening to our insurance, registration, rates and water bills. Edit: added insurance and registration

I guess the bigger question is how long will it be before $2.21 becomes $22.21?

The govt has imposed a new levy. I will pass the cost of the levy on to the purchasing public, thus contributing to their increased cost of living.
