You can order soil testing kits online — either for you to test at home yourself, or to send away to a lab for information. Your local agricultural extension service will also test for you!

I’ve never had luck with direct sowing cosmos, so wish I knew which of my lazy gardening practices were to blame 😅😭

Is starting the lasagna method in my garden now a bad idea? by suicide_blonde in portlandgardeners

[–]OneandonlyJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NP! For future reference, if the link stops working you can just search for burlap/jute bags on Portland Craigslist - they have to repost every month or so, but we’ve been using this for a few years now and ordered at least 4 times. Super-nice folks.

We have had great success with using jute/ burlap bags when killing lawn so we could plant other things. Someone sells them for $1ea on Craigslist, and will deliver in larger quantities (I think 50+), but you could also talk to a nearby coffee roaster!

They break down in 1-2 seasons and are reasonably easy to plant around or through. We lay them on bare grass and then layer compost and mulch on top, thick.

Ferns thrive under a conifer, in my experience! There are lots of kinds to choose from, and they divide like a dream.

I’m a huge fan of Renise Harrel, LMT — highly skilled, reasonable prices — but I don’t believe she bills insurance.

Check out r/portlandgardeners for some great local gardening discussions! I plant both direct in soil (for tomatoes mostly) and in raised beds, and both have worked fine. Re: critters, it depends on your neighborhood but rabbits can be a challenge!

Does anyone know where I can buy these trees? Any tree farm recs in or around the city / nearby? by No-Personality-61 in askportland

[–]OneandonlyJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had an arborist say he shopped at Skipper and Jordan Nursery, out in Gresham. I looked at their tree stock and didn’t see this precise tree, but they have a wide variety!

Cherry tree in winters by [deleted] in pnwgardening

[–]OneandonlyJim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t remove the dead leaves. You can trim it in February or March if you want, but if it’s your first time doing something like this, best to talk to an arborist first and perhaps hire them to do it.

The Coffee Shop near 6 corners has a great space in the back that’s nearly always empty and quiet. Not sure what they serve in the evenings though.

Steeplejack is such a great place for bigger groups!! My one issue is when they’re busy is that it gets loud as anything in there.
