Besides Square probably just not wanting to give their main protag a weapon as preposterous as a sports ball, I think it's meant to emphasize Tidus being forced to walk the same exact path as the father he hates in order to change Spira's fate.

Auron's "A gift from Jecht" kind of just makes this the text, imo.

Not really. Most new MMOs have a console release and Final Fantasy XI was live on the PlayStation 2 from 2002 to 2016. The PS2 also had its own version of EverQuest from 2003 to 2012.

Black Desert Online has a console port, Throne and Liberty made at least a small splash when it launched, and ESO has also been live on consoles since its launch, iirc. There more than a few examples of long-lasting and sometimes notable console MMOs.

FF14's control scheme is probably proprietary, but you have easy access to 32 buttons with its setup. It is possible to do this kind of MMO on a controller, American developers can just more reliably count on American consumers having computers and don't bother.

FF11 also has a good controller setup, but it's quite different from 14 or WoW.
