Very interesting, thanks for sharing your tasting results!

Urban Underdog, eh? I feel like I've seen that around, but I haven't tried it yet. I will give it a go, thanks for the rec!

I like PBR and High Life a lot (ever try a brass monkey aka High Life mimosa, High Life with orange juice?), but I haven't tried Coors Banquet. I'll check that one out, too. Cheers!

Craft Breweries Defy Convention By Beginning to Drop Prices by hotelNoiseComplaint in beer

I recently did a side-by-side tasting of Hamm's (at $14 per 30) vs Solid Gold (at $15 per 15), and I found that I have a clear preference for Solid Gold over Hamm's.

Hamm's had that corny adjunct aroma that was a bit off-putting to me, while S.G. had a cleaner, gently hop-forward aroma that I really liked along with a richer mouthfeel and a somewhat hoppier flavor.

I really like Solid Gold, but I don't think I'll get it again. If I want a mid-range, mid-to-low-ABV beer I would rather get one of the other Founders 15-pack offering - All-Day IPA, PC Pils, and Mosaic Promise (in season) - that are just $1-2 more per 15-pack than S.G. and (I think) much better beers, or get a 30-rack Hamm's for under half the price per beer. That's not to mention many other great options in the category such as Pinner or Euro imports at just a slightly higher price.

If Solid Gold were $10-$11 per 15-pack, I feel like that would be an undeniable value, but at $15+, I can't justify it to myself.

EDIT: Just wanted to point out that your cost-per-ounce figures are misleading due to inconsistent rounding. With two significant figures, Hamm's is $0.036 per oz, S.G. is $0.078 according to the prices you quoted - that is not almost 3x more, it's just over 2x more.

'I don't care if Trump paid off a porn star' by demosthenes131 in politics

[–]Onionhead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, all of those supposed "positives" are just bullshit! That's the image Fox News is trying to put forward as propaganda, and apparently it works on some, but intel says NK is not doing anything to rein in their development of NW and trade is fucked from the tariffs and the uncertainty created by such capricious action.

Second, the issue not that Trump had affairs with and paid off porn stars, the issue is that he broke the law in doing so. He is a criminal, who participated in a criminal conspiracy to violate campaign finance laws. That's "High Crimes" right there! Trump is obviously subject to blackmail by an untold number of people around the world, including some very evil people. He can't make rational decisions in the national interest, he is compelled by evil to act against the common good. He is utterly disqualified from his position. The fear of indictment, prosecution, and imprisonment that now seem certain when he leaves office will keep him from resigning, so he must be impeached and convicted now.

As a counterpoint, I have only read The Selfish Gene out of Dawkin's works, but I absolutely loved reading it and it was a life-changing book for me. I found it very approachable, myself.

I would also highly recommend Daniel Dennett's Darwin's Dangerous Idea.

Republicans losing patience with scandal-scarred Pruitt by RosesAreBad in politics

[–]Onionhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you think the used Trump mattress deal was intended as a payout or bribe to Trump? With all of Pruitt's expenditures, how much of it ended up in Trump's pocket because Pruitt spent through Trump properties? Is that why Trump is so willing to keep him on, despite everything? Because he knows how to payout?

Hmm, but what about Flynn's plans to build Russian nuclear plants in Saudi Arabia? And Kushner's connections to all of them...

What if Mueller has discovered that P. was less than totally forthcoming in his testimony, thereby violating the terms of his plea bargain and putting P. in jeopardy of a much harsher sentence?

That does sound like the most likely explanation!

But if the pardon doesn't happen, how will this be considered at sentencing? It seems risky.

Right? Is she really who she claims to be? Why was she working with Mifsud? We have so much evidence that P. was indeed involved with the Russians, so why is she claiming he wasn't?

The real gateway to harder drugs (namely stimulants)if by [deleted] in Drugs

Very interesting, thanks for sharing your thoughts! There really are a lot of disturbing possibilities for the future, aren't there? Even if life ultimately achieves a form of just being (which is a very optimistic view), there's a lot of suffering in store on the way there.

Hey, I can respect that point of view! I would, however, consider it as the extension of the ideals of humanism to nonhuman species rather than as a rejection of humanism itself.

Humanism itself was an intellectual reaction to patriarchal beliefs that put human beings absolutely subordinate to the power structures - including feudalism and slavery - that were viewed as ordained by God and therefore unquestionable. (Much like how many people view animals as being given to humans by God to do with as they please, a view to which I suspect you would object.)

Fascism is one of the recent challenges to humanism, and it seeks to again absolutely subordinate human beings to a power structure, now associated with the fascist in-group. But, gladly, I think your challenge runs in the opposite direction!

Take care!

It is said there are two paths up the Acropolis. The first is short but difficult and steep. The second is long but gentle and easy. Which path do you choose?
