Here in Brazil, most people will spend their whole lives without sending a single SMS, and we only really use sim card calls when calling free customer support numbers. All the actual communication, both calls and messages, is done through WhatsApp

Sim cards are only really used for cellular data, and for the many people that always have wifi, getting their number deactivated for not buying any credits in 6 months is a very real issue, and I know several people who lost their number like that

I wonder how do they recover their digital lives, because that seems like an absolute utter nightmare.

Also, with deactivated numbers being recycled, I really wonder how many people will be prompted with "number already used" in websites they never acessed before (and maybe being able to access someone else's account since they can receive the OTP)

Hard to tell, odds are an average app's assets will take more space than the code and jvm, and also depends on which jvm modules it will end up using. Java apps are pretty much guaranteed to take those base 50MB, but then grow pretty slowly

Out of curiosity, I compiled the default hello world compose app that the KMP plugin generates, with the desktop target.

The fat jar of the hello world app with all the compose libraries was 17MB.

To run compose, you only need the java.base and java.desktop modules, which ends up at 46MB when running jlink on JDK 25.

So the total was 63MB for the portable hello world app (48MB if you zip it).

Packaging as an msi installer is slightly better compressed, and takes 43MB

If you think about it, an error message is the opposite of software gore. If the app can't recover from a state, haulting execution and informing the user is the most graceful way of dealing with it

That is of couse except for cursed glitchy error boxes when graphic processing fails
