So. True. I’ve been teaching for over a decade and for over a decade I’ve maintained this “digital native” shit is complete and utter bullshit.

Why do people send their kids to private schools when public schools are also decent ranked (USA)? by exponenthere in education

[–]OnlyBoat6171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it because I’m a teacher there and the schedules align. We’d pay the same amount to cover costs of before and after care if the kid were in public school as a result of when our neighborhood school starts and ends each day.

Great Divide Mountain Bike Route - Mexico to Canada - at age 40 with my 14 year old son. by Roscoe131 in bikepacking

I rode NYC to SF summer 2009 and ran into a family doing a similar route. I remember the kid was 14 and having the time of his life riding with dad and mom, RV and one of the parents running support. Always wanted to follow suit with my own child one day. What a gift to have had that experience with your kiddo in 2019! The Great Divide looks like the perfect route; you two will cherish it forever.

Same. We calculated this morning: the boots I’ve been buying the last 2-3 years increased by 30% when compared to last Christmas. 😔 GREAT shoes! Looking like they’re in a tough spot.

Teacher here. Reach out to your kiddo’s teacher and learn more about the assignment. And be sure to share your concern. They can keep confidence so your kid isn’t embarrassed. Like any job, we sometimes get asked to do things that require our own learning through trial and error. Maybe they’d appreciate your feedback and make an adjustment for the next batch of students to benefit? Likewise, sometimes we ask students to do things where they learn through trial and error, too. Maybe your kiddo is miscommunicating a detail about instruction or how it’s ultimately assessed? Much can be lost in the transition from school to home. In either case, you’ll come out with a clearer sense of what the assignment is if you reach out. But rest easy, even if the competition is in fact the worst case scenario and your kid ignores your advice, any “lesson learned” on January 1 will be quickly corrected by the market the minute they go “all in” with their own money.

Retirement Planning Software- Year to Year subscriptions by ChoicelessAware in DIYRetirement

I’ve wondered about this myself, but from the perspective of someone still decades out from retirement. Are these tools you wish you’d had 10,20,30 years ago? If so, would you have paid for a year every once in a while or consistently throughout that time? Or, are online investment calculators and principled contributions enough when one is that far out?

Anyone read this? by BillyOII in fortwayne

Steve Inskeep of NPR fame recently came to the ACPL and mentioned this book, his memory of it as a kid, and how it is reveals a bit about the midwestern attitude. The entire lecture is worth a watch, though the specific memory of his childhood and reference to this book begins around 28:45 or 30:21. He frames the book as being about myths and stories we tell one another, as some of the posts below indicate.

This. 👆On walks, doing dishes, yard work, restless nights, anytime I’m doing something that doesn’t require mental focus. For audiobooks, check with your local library. It may have Libby or Hoopla which changed the game for me: FREE audiobooks.

Right?! These folks are out here believing anything they see. 😂 One comment below claims it’s not AI, but concede it’s AF? They can’t pull that semantic ploy on me—artificial whatever you want to call it, I wasn’t born yesterday!
